(2019) At the Battle of White Marsh on Dec. 5–8, 1777, British and Hessian troops under Gen. William Howe tried to dislodge colonial soldiers under Gen. George Washington from a formidable position on hills north of Philadelphia where they were encamped during the Philadelphia Campaign. After several days of running battle and skirmishing, Howe retreated to British-occupied Philadelphia, and Washington went into winter quarters at Valley Forge where he saw to it that his raw troops received better training.
