Statewide weather report and information produced by Penn State's Weather Communications Group faculty and students.
00:21 - Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science at Penn State. This is Weather World.
00:31 - Good evening and welcome to Weather World. Today is Friday, August 28th 2026. I'm Rob
00:35 - Lydick and it's the final Friday of August already. We'll recap some of the rains that we
00:39 - had through the Commonwealth, especially in eastern Pennsylvania last night. Before
00:44 - we get to our Friday forecast frenzy, which includes Karl Schneider with the extended
00:47 - forecast. Actually Karl will have week two trends. Rather, Marissa Ferger will have the
00:51 - extended forecast, both of which will take us out 14 days. Let's get started, though, with
00:56 - a recap of some of the rain that moved through Pennsylvania last night. The jackpot was
01:00 - actually northern Lancaster and southern Berks counties, a swath here where some rain
01:07 - totals came in anywhere from 3 or 4in over the course of the last 24 hours or so. Even some
01:13 - rainfall on the order of 2.33in at Philadelphia
01:16 - International Airport. Not enough, though, by
01:19 - the way, for a daily record yesterday, that record was over four inches set back in 1977.
01:25 - Also got some reports from a viewer. Gordon in Light Street, Pennsylvania, picking up over
01:30 - 2.95in in his gauge from those downpours that moved through yesterday, much less across
01:34 - western Pennsylvania as this cold front moved through. You can see a recap of the radar
01:39 - perspective, where some of these storms were feisty and packed. Some gusty winds across
01:43 - eastern Pennsylvania last evening diminishing. And out there today, quiet conditions.
01:47 - Just a very isolated spritz that did pop up in western Pennsylvania earlier this
01:52 - afternoon. But all in all, quieting down as that cold front has crossed in its wake,
01:57 - we see our Commonwealth cameras. A nice, beautiful
01:59 - way to wrap up the workweek out there with
02:01 - some nice cumulus clouds. And State College the same over in Pittsburgh. They're getting
02:06 - ready for the Bruno Mars concert, I believe, at Acrisure Stadium to begin the weekend
02:10 - tomorrow. Also, some clouds that hung a little bit tougher in southeast Pennsylvania with
02:15 - that boundary still slipping southeastward. But all in all, not a bad way to wrap up the
02:19 - workweek. And we'll see those clouds continue to crumble as we go through this evening,
02:22 - setting the stage for some pretty nice football night across Pennsylvania. A lot of
02:26 - the high school football teams just starting off their season tonight, we'll see those
02:30 - temperatures really begin to tumble as well as the dew points will also be dropping
02:36 - going through this evening. Winds have shifted to come out of the north or northwest,
02:41 - anywhere from five to maybe 15mph at times today, but a refreshing breeze at that. Get
02:47 - this as of 430, temperatures only in the low 70s across the northwest plateau, low 80s in
02:51 - the central mountains, and low to mid 80s southeast of the mountains. I think we'll see
02:55 - those temperature readings right around seasonable levels as we begin the weekend
02:59 - tomorrow. But I mentioned those dropping dew points down in the upper 40s now in northwest
03:04 - Pennsylvania. We'll continue to see them fall through the 60s and even 50s as we go through
03:08 - tonight. And that's why our temperatures will actually drop down into the 50s for many of
03:13 - us as we begin the day tomorrow across the U.S. you see a slice of nice from the Midwest all
03:17 - the way into the northeast. And I think we'll see comfortable conditions for Saturday before
03:22 - our dew points begin to increase slightly for the second half of the weekend. But
03:26 - high pressure will be sliding in tonight. Not only does that provide for a nice evening
03:30 - tonight, but a really nice day as we start off our weekend tomorrow. Temperatures will
03:34 - remain on the seasonable side with this area of high pressure in control. And so we're
03:38 - looking at those temperatures dropping down into the 50s tonight. In fact, I think
03:42 - actually some of the cool spots may be in the mid 40s across the northwest plateau. High
03:47 - pressure remains in control tomorrow. 70s and 80s will do it for daytime highs tomorrow
03:52 - with just a few high clouds overhead. And then as we go into Sunday, more clouds.
03:56 - Temperatures will also be on the increase. And I think humidity levels also increasing
04:01 - too, with just the chance for an isolated shower. Better chance comes in as we go into
04:04 - Sunday night and into Monday, which we'll hear more about from Marissa in tonight's
04:09 - extended forecast. So for tonight, we'll call it fabulous for the Friday Night lights.
04:14 - Mid 40s in the cold spots. 50s for most of us. Mid 60s in Center City, Philadelphia. But
04:19 - all in all will be comfy and cooler. Those cumulus clouds crumbling this evening with
04:23 - some areas of fog developing overnight. But once that fog burns off tomorrow morning,
04:27 - really setting the stage for a beautiful day tomorrow should see those temperatures in the
04:32 - mid 70s to low to mid 80s. Plenty of sunshine, comfortable conditions. Once again some
04:37 - patchy fog developing as we go to Saturday night. But all in all a beautiful day to get
04:43 - outside and enjoy this lovely weather. To wrap up the month of August going into our Sunday
04:47 - temperatures on the increase, humidity levels also on the increase with clouds increasing
04:51 - through the afternoon, I think we will see a few spotty thundershowers arrive in the
04:55 - northwest overnight, or maybe perhaps late in the day. Southeast. We're back in just a
05:05 - moment with the extended.
05:25 - Meteorological fall makes an appearance during this extended forecast period, but it looks
05:30 - like Mother Nature is not going to get the memo, as we are going to feel quite summerlike
05:35 - in terms of both warmth and humidity. Before we get to that, here's the water vapor.
05:39 - Satellite imagery really gives us an idea of those steering winds aloft. A big ridge of
05:43 - high pressure has dominated the western US this week, and we've been under the influence of
05:49 - this trough. Now, by the time we get to Monday, which is when this period begins, that ridge
05:55 - is shifting eastward, and that is going to allow some very warm air to move into our
06:00 - region. And it's also going to help pump in some of that humidity that's going to really
06:05 - we're really going to feel the impacts of that, especially by the time we get to the middle
06:10 - of the week. But towards the end of the week, a trough is going to try to sneak through,
06:14 - and I think that will put an end to at least the very, very warm conditions and will also
06:19 - bring us some comfort. Comfort by the time we get to Friday. Going to focus on the
06:24 - temperature tracker during this extended forecast period. And on Monday, we can see highs
06:29 - getting mainly into the 80s across the Commonwealth, tickling the 90s across the
06:34 - southern portion of the state Tuesday. That's when we really start to see those temperatures
06:39 - really ramp up. Everybody is going to be at least 5 to 10 degrees above average.
06:45 - Continuing to see that heat on Wednesday as well. Thursday. This is the beginning of the
06:50 - change as a front is going to be approaching the region. Things will get still, be warm
06:55 - ahead of it, but behind it we start to cool down and then we'll all notice a difference
06:59 - as we get into the day on Friday. As far as humidity is concerned, dew points are going
07:04 - to be quite high. So by the time we get to Tuesday and Wednesday, it's going to feel
07:09 - quite muggy out there. But then by the end of the week, this front coming in from the north,
07:14 - you'll start to see the cooler colors moving in. And that's going to be a sign of more
07:18 - comfortable things to come. But when we get that kind of heat and that kind of humidity, it
07:22 - can be dangerous. So the National Weather Service heat risk potential for Monday,
07:29 - showing moderate risk for heat related illnesses. But once we get into Tuesday, that's when
07:33 - things really begin to change, especially across western and southern Pennsylvania, where
07:39 - sensitive groups could have some problems. You want to stay indoors if you can, and also
07:44 - make sure if you are going to be outside, that you stay well hydrated. We continue to see
07:49 - some of that major heat risk across parts of the state on Wednesday and then Thursday. As
07:54 - that front approaches, things begin to look a little bit better. So let's look at this
07:58 - forecast in a little bit more depth. Now the big thing to notice is temperatures about a
08:03 - little over five degrees above average for daytime highs. But the overnight lows this entire
08:08 - period, we are going to have some very warm nights with some places with temperatures about
08:13 - ten degrees above average for the overnight lows as far as Monday and Tuesday, the
08:16 - beginning of the week, just a little bit of
08:19 - cloudiness. Again, temperatures about five degrees
08:21 - above average for daytime highs. Just a low risk for isolated showers and storms. I think
08:26 - most remain dry. It is going to become more humid
08:28 - though, as we get into the middle of the week.
08:30 - Ahead of that front. That's going to move through sometime late Wednesday into early
08:35 - Thursday, and that's going to give us a better chance to see widespread showers and
08:39 - thunderstorms. And then behind that front, we
08:42 - start to clear out. Temperatures start to drop,
08:45 - but we feel a lot more comfortable as those dew points also begin to fall. Carl has a
08:56 - look at the Labor Day forecast in week two. Trends coming up.
09:03 - This week. Two period takes us through the Labor Day weekend, where temperatures look to be
09:07 - comfortable around either side of average precipitation chances, a little bit more
09:11 - uncertain. Try to break those down best I can here in just a few moments. But we'll start,
09:15 - as always, with the segment with a look at the average highs and lows which are
09:20 - falling rapidly. Finally, at this time of the year, this is in the middle of this week two
09:23 - period. And so I think during most of this period, temperatures, high and low
09:27 - temperatures are going to be within a few degrees of these values. So in most areas, this
09:32 - is going to translate to a very comfortable feel for late summer, early fall. So as
09:37 - always in this segment, we use ensemble forecasting.
09:39 - These are many different solutions to the
09:41 - European model represented by the colored lines early in the period. I'll draw your
09:46 - attention to the troughing generally where these lines dip to the south and the east, the
09:51 - bulge representing the ridge across the southern plains, and that will move eastward and
09:55 - expand as we go into the middle of the week, as
09:57 - Marissa talked about in her extended forecast
09:59 - period, we're expecting some hot and kind of muggy conditions making it in here by
10:04 - the middle of next week. But that will change as a cold front will pass through late
10:08 - Thursday, Friday kind of time frame. And behind that, as we start this period on Saturday
10:13 - will be a northwesterly flow. So this will knock temperatures close to average as we're not
10:17 - talking about a major cooldown, but it will get rid of the humidity and it will dry things
10:21 - out, at least temporarily. Moving into Sunday, we're still kind of a northwesterly flow. I
10:26 - think high pressure is probably dominating, but
10:29 - then certainty really falls off a cliff as we
10:31 - approach Labor Day and kind of the rest of this week two period, as the spaghetti gets
10:36 - really jumbled, we'll switch modes here to the upper air, high anomalies and the overall
10:41 - flow pattern here represented by the black lines. And one thing you'll notice during this
10:45 - period is the magnitude of these anomalies, especially across the continental United
10:50 - States, is rather low. The flow is very west to east. So a zonal flow and all of that
10:55 - makes for a lot of uncertainty. I think any weather systems are going to be kind of weak in
10:59 - magnitude. So if something does come by on Labor Day, what that means in terms of sensible
11:03 - impacts for you all is we're not dealing with temperatures that are going to be vastly hot
11:08 - or vastly cool. And if we do see rain, it will likely be a brief disruption rather than an
11:13 - overall washout, much of the same as we move through the midweek period. Weak ridging
11:18 - being noted across the middle of the country. Kind of nothing in terms of the temperature
11:23 - anomalies across the northeast. And you see a real absence of color as we close out this
11:28 - period, the week two period. So we'll see. This is probably one of the more boring week two
11:32 - Checkerboards you'll even see ever see on this program. And that's because I don't have any
11:36 - confidence of temperatures being above or below average during this period. In fact, I
11:40 - think it's very likely that temperatures are within a few degrees of average through most
11:44 - of this period. If we do see some temperature anomalies, I think we'll be on the higher
11:48 - side of average, and that would probably be through Tuesday through Thursday of this period.
11:51 - But I don't have enough confidence right now to put anything on the checkerboard.
11:54 - So overall, looking comfortable in the temperature department. And then in terms of
11:58 - precipitation, I have dry conditions on Saturday with high pressure behind that front.
12:03 - The absence of color Sunday, Monday doesn't mean it's going to be dry or it's going to rain.
12:07 - It just means I don't have enough confidence here to put anything. But one thing I can
12:10 - say about Labor Day is it's looking rather comfortable in terms of temperatures. And
12:15 - right now for precipitation, I think if it does rain, which I wouldn't be surprised if it
12:19 - does, it's not going to be an all day washout, probably just more of a minor disruption in.
12:24 - Much of the same can be said for the rest of the week. Two periods. That's week two trends.
12:34 - We're back with a recap up next.
12:39 - A high school marching bands will be taking to the field tonight. And a beautiful night.
12:42 - In fact, for those Friday night lights as high pressure continues to be in control,
12:47 - we'll see temperatures drop into the mid 40s in the cool spots. I think 50 for most of
12:52 - us and low to mid 60s off to the south and east. Any of those cumulus clouds out there
12:56 - this evening will be crumbling. We'll see some areas of fog develop overnight. I think the
12:59 - fog will burn off tomorrow morning and give way to a beautiful day. High pressure
13:03 - remains in control, so plenty of sunshine, low humidity, temperatures right around
13:08 - seasonable levels. So mid 70s to low to mid 80s. Some once again some patchy fog
13:12 - developing as we go into Saturday night. Then on Sunday our temperatures will be on the
13:16 - increase, humidity levels on the increase and eventually clouds on the increase as we
13:21 - head into the afternoon. Upper 70s to upper 80s should do it for daytime highs. The chances
13:26 - there in southeast Pennsylvania for an isolated afternoon shower or rumble of thunder.
13:30 - Most of us staying dry. Better chance comes in,
13:32 - I think, as we go into the overnight hours, as
13:34 - we see a chance for some showers and thunderstorms by then. All right, well, just a
13:39 - little floating bit of me there at the end of the show. Thanks so much for tuning in to
13:43 - Weather World this week. We'll see you back here on Monday for hashtag headlines. We'll also
13:47 - have an update to that extended forecast from all of us here at Weather World. Have a great
13:57 - weekend.
