00:21 - reservoir park which is the highest point in the city.

00:26 - on the grounds around the museum a lot people ask

00:30 - why this is the perfect location for a civil war museum

00:34 - with gettysburg just down the road that's an added benefit but

00:38 - the real fact is if

00:41 - Harrisburg was a true

00:43 - civil war city.

00:45 - It was

00:46 - the object of

00:47 - confederate advances during the war the confederates

00:51 - would have loved to have captured Harrisburg.

00:54 - Basically it will have been

00:55 - like

00:56 - a

00:56 - gateway to the north

00:57 - almost

00:58 - Baltimore

01:00 - Washington all the the cities in the north

01:03 - and.

01:04 - Also there were

01:06 - railroads

01:07 - converging here several major railroads converged in Harrisburg

01:12 - if the confederates had captured Harrisburg.

01:15 - All of the supplies and men

01:17 - being funneled in through Harrisburg to get to the front

01:20 - would have to go way out west.

01:23 - and come in from that way so it would have been a logistical nightmare.

01:27 - Also

01:27 - Harrisburg was home to camp curtain

01:30 - which is the largest camp of consolidation

01:32 - in the north during the war

01:34 - some three hundred thousand men pass through Harrisburg on their way to the front

01:38 - we talk about the

01:39 - entire civil war under one roof we were one of the first museums to

01:44 - to do that in the country

01:45 - and

01:46 - we try and

01:47 - give an

01:48 - balanced even.

01:51 - Telling of the story of the civil war.

01:53 - From both southern and northern perspectives

01:56 - we talk about

01:58 - famous individuals during the war like general Grant

02:01 - generally but we also talk about private soldiers

02:04 - we talk about

02:05 - the civilians who were

02:07 - Left back home

02:09 - we make sure we

02:10 - try and give the visitor a a well rounded experience

02:14 - when they leave here

02:15 - and

02:16 - try and give them the basis to build on that knowledge if they

02:19 - desire to do that

02:27 - it's

02:28 - Navy week

02:29 - and

02:30 - we were actually contacted by the Navy

02:33 - they wanted to come here

02:34 - and.

02:35 - Do some programming

02:37 - and we were

02:38 - thrilled to be able to be involved

02:40 - with the Navy

02:41 - obviously.

02:43 - You know it just helps tell the story

02:45 - and so we get a chance to

02:47 - work with

02:49 - our men and women in uniform

02:51 - which is always

02:52 - a huge plus for the museum

03:04 - happy Navy week at Harrisburg we're excited to interact with you all

03:08 - so today we have multiple assets

03:09 - throughout the Navy participating and doing

03:11 - displays

03:12 - for navy week Harrisburg.

03:14 - Few assets

03:15 - to include the USS Harrisburg a preconditioned

03:17 - unit over it being built in Mississippi

03:20 - along with ourselves USS constitution

03:22 - and then our team with Navy history and heritage command so the USS Harrisburg is

03:26 - going to be LPD it's an amphibious

03:28 - type of ship

03:29 - and with that

03:30 - the Harrisburg is the namesake my job on board is

03:33 - maintaining the

03:35 - main propulsion plant for the ship

03:37 - and the power generation

03:38 - so a lot of auxiliary pumps

03:41 - services we provide a lotta things to

03:43 - keep the crew comfort but also keep the ship

03:46 - Going through the water

03:48 - It's a landing platform ship

03:50 - it

03:50 - delivers Marines

03:51 - close to the beach

03:53 - so if we ever did any

03:55 - Amphibious warfare we

03:57 - get them close enough so right now

03:59 - we're in the pre commissioning phase so it's mainly

04:02 - office work

04:03 - i'm part of the staff that's down in San Diego kind of just.

04:07 - Building getting ready for

04:09 - shifting over to pascagoula who will eventually take ownership of the ship

04:13 - and complete its final stages before it.

04:15 - Gets delivered to the Navy

04:23 - for me personally coming out for Navy week

04:25 - Harrisburg is a chance to connect with

04:28 - guests and locals of the communities

04:30 - it's a great chance to tell the story of the Navy also

04:33 - being aboard

04:34 - the oldest commissioned war ship it's a

04:35 - great chance to tell the story of the Navy and kind of

04:37 - you know

04:38 - to the roots of

04:40 - how it started back years ago

04:42 - it's a great opportunity to be down here in

04:44 - Harrisburg

04:45 - Pennsylvania

04:46 - I haven't gotten out too much just yet

04:48 - and this is day one for me being out here but

04:51 - i'm looking forward to it it's a great opportunity to see

04:55 - anywhere that the Navy has gotten to take me and

04:58 - just take advantage of it

05:07 - why the Navy

05:08 - Ooo, why the Navy.

05:10 - The real answer for me honestly i.

05:12 - Got out of high school I turned eighteen I wanted nothing

05:16 - to do with school anymore so i looked towards the

05:19 - military I seen a lot of my cousins and family members

05:22 - all of them did that

05:23 - did great things

05:24 - happened to have their pathways to the military so

05:27 - i went forward and here i am nineteen and a half years later

05:30 - so i want to say why i joined the Navy personally

05:32 - and kind of you know hopefully i can relate to others

05:34 - why i joined it was to help find navigation within myself i had no guidance

05:38 - no clear answer what i wanted

05:39 - there's also the kind of missing a sense of patriotism

05:42 - is also another reason why i joined

05:44 - and then I also wanted to travel the world

05:46 - I'm currently stationed in Boston Massachusetts my first ship was

05:49 - a aircraft carrier in

05:50 - Japan the coast of Japan

05:52 - and i got to see you know multiple other lands and I've got to you know well

05:56 - round myself as a person as an individual

05:58 - the greatest part of being in the Navy for me it's really as far as we are a

06:03 - military organization but there's also a lot of

06:06 - family and friendships that you create along the way.

06:09 - Starting all the way back at my first ship you

06:11 - know we were very strong division family element

06:13 - it might've

06:14 - had to do with being stationed

06:15 - for deployed overseas

06:17 - but it's a great opportunity and you meet some life long friends.
