Beef showmanship at the York State Fairgrounds.
00:00 - My name's Alexis cash I'm from this area and I'm helping
00:02 - line up the cattle for the junior beach show today
00:05 - alright tell me about the junior beef show right
00:07 - now they're doing showmanship so what is showmanship
00:09 - so right now they're doing chairmanship which is when the juniors present their
00:12 - animal for their data so the judge is looking for foot placement and how where they
00:16 - position their animal in the ring and how
00:18 - much attention their paying have judge as well
00:21 - and what's the age range for the competition so currently it can be anyone that
00:25 - is older than eight up to eighteen and they're broken down by age division so we
00:29 - started with our kiwis ways which are the under eight year olds and then we went into
00:32 - our senior showmanship which is about sixteen eighteen
00:34 - and we kind of break it down from there based on age
00:37 - and then is there a winner for each level of competition and
00:40 - and ultimately do they compete against each other
00:42 - yeah so we'll pick a winner for each age division
00:45 - well then we'll go back in for overall the showmanship
00:48 - whoever wins that will proceed onto Friday when they
00:50 - go for all the different species here at the fair
00:53 - but I think the young lady that starts this class with one whale of the steer.
00:57 - Leeds office showmanship go pretty handily I think when
00:59 - we think about who gives me the most consistent looks
01:02 - and the best looks of that care for their work side by side or
01:05 - stay there along the rail she just does a great job
01:08 - she handles ahead of that series actually will
01:11 - deepen a
01:12 - head elevated
01:13 - and really comfortable
01:14 - as she moves around the front into that calf
01:16 - I'm here with kindly can we just won her age group for beef showmanship.
01:20 - First tell us what age group that is and then explain will be showmanship is
01:24 - the age division I competed I was
01:26 - thirteen or fifteen year olds
01:28 - they have showmanship is basically when the judge evaluates how the exhibitor.
01:33 - Shows their animal and
01:35 - a few
01:36 - key things that they're looking for as
01:38 - if the animal is set in place right and always giving the judge
01:41 - a good look at the animal
01:43 - eye contact how they navigate around the ring and other stuff like that
01:47 - and
01:48 - how do you
01:49 - how do you know do you know if you're doing a good job when you're out there
01:51 - competing or is it hard to tell what the judge is thinking
01:54 - it's really.
01:56 - Good.
01:58 - If the animal is set up right and you're looking at the judge
02:02 - you always want to be
02:03 - the last one to get pulled most of the times just depends on how the show does it
02:07 - but
02:08 - it's
02:08 - the main thing is have the animals behaving and setting up
02:11 - and how do you
02:12 - what goes into getting the animal ready for the show.
02:15 - A few different things that we like to do around our farm is
02:18 - take them around like different places around the farm that way they don't
02:21 - they aren't attached to one specific thing or another
02:24 - and just get them prepared for show and we
02:26 - always working like we're going to be at a show
02:28 - how do you get them ready right before the show do you have to
02:31 - brush or groom them
02:32 - he has a lot of hair so we wash them right before
02:35 - the show that way he said as cool as possible and nah just the main thing is grooming
02:39 - and making sure they're nice and clean
02:42 - do you know it is the temperament the same all the time or is it depend on the day no
02:46 - it depends on the day a lot of animals.
02:48 - If you work on them accordingly then they should be
02:51 - good but sometimes they have a mind of their own so
02:54 - we just hope and pray that they behave cause we're Vermont like a team
02:57 - have you ever been in a competition where
02:59 - the animal was didn't want to cooperate oh
03:01 - yeah my many times and how do you handle that
03:04 - just try and stay calm cause they read off of whatever emotion you have
03:07 - yeah
03:08 - well congratulations any
03:09 - advice if somebody's thinking about getting into
03:11 - caring for animals or competing in these shows
03:14 - yeah
03:15 - if you ever think about it always make sure just to
03:18 - maybe come watch and ask questions to know what you're getting into but
03:22 - definitely think about it cause that's a great
03:24 - association that raises amazing pets so I
03:27 - eat it in the junior age division
03:30 - and championship is a competition that
03:33 - allows competitors that
03:35 - show cattle to show off their skills
03:38 - and how they show their animal and present them
03:40 - it also gives
03:41 - them experience for later on eight years and light sellers.
03:46 - They'll.
03:47 - Tell me how you know you're doing good in the arena
03:50 - so how I know the judge
03:52 - how I know that I'm doing good by the judge's appearance is basically he keeps on
03:56 - looking at you and when he comes in like
03:59 - interacts with you it gives you sort of a hint that
04:01 - you're doing good and
04:03 - that gives you
04:03 - better luck
04:05 - how do you get the animal ready for the show
04:07 - so we usually wash them in the morning and then we come on
04:10 - and since this shows like the no fit show we just blow them out
04:14 - and then we get to take I'm
04:15 - not sure what's an okay show me.
04:17 - I can't put any like blue or products in a modest
04:20 - like you can put conditioner in but you can't put
04:23 - like adhesive which is a blue
04:24 - so
04:25 - It's pretty much snow no products what's the hardest
04:28 - part about competing in the showmanship in the end the
04:31 - most fun.
04:32 - The hardest part about computing
04:34 - is
04:35 - Like what happened to me today is
04:38 - started
04:39 - to
04:39 - And if you're in there awhile your you're
04:41 - sort of hurt and you just get
04:43 - your
04:43 - been fun isn't hard it's probably just
04:46 - seeing
04:47 - yourself go up higher and we'll
04:49 - get better at showmanship for your life
04:51 - we now need the first and second back in the ring from Oliver showmanship classes.
04:59 - Colton grim from our first class
05:01 - Lindsey Graham from our first class
05:04 - kilogram from our second class
05:06 - Payton sparks from our second class
05:09 - Kaylee Godfrey from Arthur class
05:11 - Abigail hiding it from our third class
05:14 - and the
05:15 - free
05:16 - from our fourth class
05:17 - and Kelly robinette from our fourth class.
05:21 - These are your top showman for our York fair twenty twenty six.
05:29 - Our judges looking at how well they are exhibiting our animals they are looking at
05:34 - how well they're paying attention to him and he's not only looking at our
05:39 - first
05:39 - place
05:40 - winners from each boss in the center of the
05:42 - ring but he's also looking at our second place
05:45 - exhibitors
05:46 - at the end of the rings so he's
05:48 - to be paying attention to all of the animals that are in the ring and they.
05:53 - Members that are in the
05:55 - and need to be paying attention to the judge and their
05:57 - animal is a lot for everybody to be doing all at one time.
06:05 - Yup.
06:11 - I didn't.
06:15 - Make a
06:15 - heck of a job there but.
06:26 - Family.
06:27 - Said.
06:29 - Philip.
06:32 - Room
06:32 - or do
06:33 - we work together
06:35 - all the time and
06:36 - we work on almost daily and we try to do as a team
06:40 - yeah it's kind of more of a team effort everybody pulling in the same direction.
06:44 - Try to work together and make everybody as good as possible at the same time so.
06:51 - Our family has been in it
06:53 - since we were
06:54 - born and stuff so
06:55 - pretty much since day one we've been
06:57 - around cattle.
06:58 - Broker.
07:00 - Yeah ever since we were eligible which is eight years old.
07:04 - Most of
07:05 - us.
07:05 - We've been
07:06 - friends but we've been
07:08 - patches and steam as of late so.
07:10 - Yeah whatever
07:11 - except for the super
07:13 - we go to feast on international livestock expo
07:16 - in Harrisburg pa and that's in October.
07:21 - Know what
07:22 - both of these animals are going to get sober slaughtering meat so
07:26 - they're going to be retired after this gone
07:28 - are the kind where you ended up a
07:30 - it.
07:32 - The.
07:32 - Federal reserve.
07:34 - Is a pretty cool experience that
07:36 - will probably be
07:37 - good I'm great
07:39 - a little sweaty.
07:41 - How do you feel with your sister.
07:43 - Though that'd be good
07:44 - that'd be right there
07:45 - feels great it's kind of nice seeing or come up through and
07:48 - grassroots success and do
07:50 - good for everybody.
07:53 - Are you
07:53 - fucking.
07:54 - How.
07:55 - Would you say
07:56 - what do you like best about.
07:58 - I
07:59 - Dunno we're both pretty competitive so just being
08:02 - able to do and do it together is pretty neat
08:04 - helping the younger members is probably one of the
08:06 - most rewarding pieces of
08:08 - before a thing younger members go up to the program and
08:11 - grow from
08:12 - where they started the weather out today.
