York State Fair: York County 4H Program

York County 4H Program at the York State Fairgrounds.

Caption Text Below:

00:00 - Hi my name is Pam Tracy I'm one of the four each educators here in York county and

00:05 - this week we are at the York state fair

00:07 - for each program it is a national youth organization for ages five to eighteen

00:13 - every state every county within every state has for each program

00:18 - different states do things differently here you're in

00:20 - Pennsylvania and York county we have multiple clubs

00:24 - in York we have right around thirty four each clubs

00:27 - we have members that do animal projects

00:30 - some do science based projects we have some special

00:33 - interest topics like shooting sports and entomology

00:37 - and then we also have

00:38 - community clubs so

00:40 - they do the non-animal projects

00:42 - like woodworking sewing cooking

00:45 - arts and crafts

00:46 - here at the York state fair.

00:49 - Projects are in the memorial hall east

00:52 - and we have over one hundred projects that are here

00:56 - and a little under one hundred exhibitors

00:58 - with number of members doing those project so

01:00 - today we're going to highlight some of those

01:03 - top winners and explain how the judging.

01:06 - So our best

01:07 - in show for each

01:09 - project that we had this year for the non animal

01:11 - exhibits was one of our members entomology collections

01:15 - and these are really interesting exhibits this

01:18 - member has been in for each for multiple for years

01:21 - every year

01:23 - the entomology members add to their exhibit.

01:26 - So when a judge looks at these collections

01:29 - they look at the quality of the specimens which all of them were prepped in

01:34 - proved

01:35 - ways

01:36 - and they will look to see that everything is labeled correctly

01:40 - within in the class the scientific classification.

01:43 - So each year

01:45 - as the member bills in their collection they're going to have new insects

01:49 - and they also go into the life cycle for an insect.

01:54 - When we go over to one of our arts and crafts projects

01:57 - this was our reserve and show project.

02:01 - This member is

02:03 - very interested in wildlife so he prepared a piece of wood

02:07 - and then he painted in detail.

02:10 - A pin tail duck and teal ducks so

02:13 - it was fun to see him do this project independently and really take an interest in

02:17 - wildlife and further his interest in that

02:20 - and we will come over here to our textiles or clothing and textiles next.

02:25 - We had a lot of arts and crafts this year we have

02:28 - some woodworking a lot of tie-dye stepping-stones

02:31 - fleece blankets but then our alpaca club

02:34 - has members that works with fiber

02:37 - arts projects

02:38 - so

02:39 - These

02:40 - members.

02:42 - Are very talented and have learned a lot of skills in weaving

02:47 - so not only do they work with

02:49 - the

02:49 - the animals with alpacas they also learn how to

02:53 - condition the fiber to spin it prep the yarn

02:56 - and how to weave some of them also know how to

02:59 - crochet and knit

03:01 - but these examples here are ones that they

03:04 - that they wove.

03:06 - So in general when we have judging here at the fair we have judges that come

03:12 - and they do the Danish system so every project every entry

03:16 - gets scored against a rubric

03:18 - and then that way every member receives a for each

03:21 - ribbon as part of their project completion for the year

03:24 - then we have a second set of judges who are are the officials for the York state fair

03:29 - so they do the American system of judging were

03:32 - they within a class so within the weaving.

03:35 - Within the fleece blankets or the beaded key chains they look at one class at a time

03:41 - and they place.

03:43 - One two and three sometimes they'll give an honorable mention

03:46 - so so some members receive two ribbons some receive one

03:50 - our division winners receive the little rosettes and our best in show received the

03:55 - larger rosette

03:56 - but it's

03:57 - very very fun just to see the kids complete their

04:00 - projects they have fun with it they're learning

04:03 - skills and education not only in project skills

04:06 - but citizenship and leadership throughout the year

04:09 - and every year we just see how they grow

04:12 - they find their interest and it's really

04:15 - a place for them to

04:17 - just cultivate.

04:18 - Those skills as they become adults and

04:21 - and grow up so it's a lot of fun and we welcome you to come out and

04:24 - check our exhibit.
