Interview with Patrick Ball, CEO at the York State Fair.

Caption Text Below:

00:08 - Tell me about the York state fair when did this

00:10 - whole party started the bag and seventeen sixty five.

00:14 - Residents of your county decided they wanted to have an agricultural fair.

00:18 - That was the first York state fair

00:20 - trade

00:21 - routes all the way back to eleven years before the country.

00:24 - Was even a country

00:25 - yeah

00:25 - I'm sure a lot's changed

00:27 - in all that time right right

00:28 - so what were some of that do you know any

00:30 - of the history of what was going on early on

00:32 - yeah so again started off as primarily an agricultural fair.

00:36 - We were downtown

00:37 - right in the headquarters

00:39 - moved to the corner of king and queen

00:41 - some acreage there

00:43 - and then the eighteen eighty eight we moved out to this

00:45 - facility which is eighty seven acres

00:48 - at the time was kind of in the

00:49 - suburbs

00:50 - but now it's right in the middle of everything were bordered by restaurant row York

00:54 - city and west Manchester township.

00:56 - It's easy for people to get here

00:59 - and convenient for people to walk

01:01 - so

01:02 - It's a great venue and

01:04 - really.

01:05 - Looks sort of look around

01:07 - there's

01:08 - plenty to do

01:09 - and plenty to see

01:10 - and it has really evolved

01:11 - still strong in our agricultural roots

01:14 - but we've also got the carnival component

01:16 - we've added livestock

01:18 - we've added

01:19 - agricultural education which is a big part of our mission

01:22 - and then you know

01:24 - you always have the entertainment on the grandstand

01:26 - we actually have two other vendors as well for two other venues as well for.

01:30 - Alright will tell me what does it take to put on

01:33 - an event like this

01:34 - we actually start planning

01:35 - the week or two after the end of the fair

01:38 - we start planning the next year

01:40 - we'll do a debrief with the leadership team

01:42 - everybody who's in charge of a particular area

01:44 - what went well what didn't go well marked what went well

01:48 - we'll try to fix if anything didn't go well

01:50 - how are we can be better

01:52 - and then we just start working on

01:54 - what's our theme

01:55 - what's it going to look like as it relates to

01:57 - acts entertainment rather than free acts paid acts those kind of things.

02:01 - For people that are looking for agriculture what

02:03 - what could they see for agriculture you mentioned

02:05 - sure so we have a number of buildings dedicated to agriculture

02:09 - start off with horticultural hall.

02:11 - That's where you can find anything that's been made

02:14 - by someone whether it's cookies cakes brownies pies.

02:18 - Jellies jams

02:19 - or if it was grown right we have a lot of

02:21 - born up there right now.

02:23 - A lot of peppers and some other things that are

02:25 - kind of scattered in

02:27 - it so that really celebrates

02:29 - and

02:29 - there's an educational component that goes along with it

02:32 - how to grow your food how to make it and then

02:35 - you have the competition right so the competition

02:37 - really

02:38 - if you look there are a number of people

02:40 - who are riki winners and

02:43 - there's a certain pride that goes with that and

02:45 - for certain categories you actually advance the

02:48 - show

02:48 - to be able to compete at the state level.

02:51 - We also have our ag education center

02:53 - which is

02:54 - hands on.

02:55 - Area.

02:57 - Tens of thousands of square feet

02:59 - that allow kids

03:00 - hands on experience

03:01 - plan seed

03:03 - get up close to a cow

03:04 - get opposed to a caf get up close to the

03:07 - chicks that are hatching

03:08 - or have recently had the same with ducklings

03:11 - so it's a lot of really good.

03:13 - Practical hands on education and of course we have argued bmc arena.

03:18 - Where we have

03:19 - over thirteen hundred animals

03:21 - devil come through

03:23 - being shown by ffh kids for each kids

03:26 - in competition

03:27 - and

03:28 - that all ends with the livestock auction

03:30 - which ultimately for many of those kids provides the money they need to go to college

03:35 - and other

03:36 - post-secondary education

03:38 - primarily in agriculture

03:40 - and so that's helping them

03:42 - again

03:43 - perpetuate the agricultural culture.

03:45 - What are some of your themes this year what are you proud to show off or biggest

03:48 - or biggest theme this year

03:50 - is.

03:51 - Fair more spend less.

03:54 - We notice last year

03:55 - people were kind of holding back on spending when things were

03:59 - on sale

04:01 - and so we

04:02 - we went to art

04:02 - session aires

04:03 - we talked to a number of people killed a number of partnerships

04:07 - and.

04:08 - Again

04:09 - have been emphasizing this whole thing where

04:11 - when you come to the fair

04:12 - that

04:13 - you actually have to pay full price.

04:15 - Is only

04:16 - two of the ten days right

04:18 - we have eight of ten of our days or promo days

04:21 - and so there's a number of

04:23 - opportunities to come in for either a discounted or free

04:26 - free admission

04:27 - once you do that

04:29 - you have that ticket

04:30 - you can go to horticulture hot

04:32 - and old Maine where we have all of arts and crafts

04:35 - between those two falls we have almost eight thousand

04:39 - entries for people to look at and just again kind of admire

04:43 - we've got the jagged vacation center

04:45 - we have

04:46 - an outdoor market an indoor market for people who are selling Nazi

04:50 - and then of course our concessionaires

04:52 - got the livestock but then around

04:54 - we've got what we call free acts they're free.

04:57 - The publican included with your price of admission obviously not free to.

05:01 - Stop this repeating beatty circus

05:03 - we've got the grizzly bear encounter which is an educational show around grizzly bears

05:07 - we've got a couple of roaming acts

05:09 - we've got the cowboys circus which has been very popular

05:12 - we have the chainsaw carver

05:14 - who's actually carving up the walls

05:16 - and at the end of the entity ten days

05:18 - we'll have thirty

05:19 - completed.

05:21 - Carpets is just amazing

05:24 - so you can go around you can look it up with a bunch of different stuff.

05:28 - Not to mention

05:29 - in our in our

05:30 - stats area

05:32 - which is our our honky tonk bar.

05:35 - We have live entertainment in there every night

05:37 - whether it's blues country rock.

05:40 - Next Friday we are to pro wrestling

05:42 - vs wildly entertaining

05:44 - then

05:45 - on our froggy free stage we work with froggy one mm seven seven

05:48 - tapering the up and coming artist out of Nashville.

05:52 - York is known as one of those places around the country that if you want to make it

05:55 - in country music you have to come through York

05:57 - Scott has these incredible connections in Nashville to get us artist

06:02 - so people like Lainey Wilson Kane brown

06:04 - they've all performed on our free stage

06:06 - and again just as it says

06:08 - it's free and included with your price of admission then this year on the grandstand

06:12 - we.

06:13 - We've

06:14 - set a goal

06:15 - that no ticket

06:16 - is going to.

06:17 - Be more than fifty dollars.

06:19 - Cheaper goals actually notice kit is more than forty five dollars

06:22 - we've got Brantley Gilbert here Tuesday night.

06:25 - Forty five dollar tickets

06:27 - and probably

06:28 - one of the best deals in country music right now

06:30 - so

06:31 - Again

06:32 - focusing on his fare more spend less

06:35 - and it's been

06:35 - interesting to see how people

06:37 - really responded positively.
