00:28 - just got back from the independence day weekend I

00:31 - started off with big heat ended with some big rain total

00:34 - and

00:35 - flooding downpours water rescues and some areas seeing more

00:38 - rain yesterday than in the past several months combined

00:41 - we're not quite out of the woods yet but gradually things are going to diminish over

00:44 - the next couple of days okay we'll get those details from ban a little bit

00:48 - and just a little bit I'll also have the

00:49 - extended forecast taking us through the weekend

00:51 - at first it is a Monday let's get to this week's edition of hashtag headlines.

01:04 - Incident meteorologist Kaitlyn Corey and this is hashtag headlines

01:08 - our weekly look at what's been trending in weather and climate news

01:11 - well first get started with hashtag south Dakota severe

01:15 - category four hurricane winds occurring in south Dakota

01:18 - well that's what happened last week as a destructive

01:20 - storm tore through Hyde county south Dakota

01:23 - bringing notably powerful tornado like winds to the area

01:26 - during the early hours of Monday morning as

01:28 - severe thunderstorms moved through the state

01:30 - a wind speed of one hundred and thirty one miles

01:32 - per hour was recorded in the community of hala bird

01:35 - meteorologists believe the one has

01:37 - and thirty one mile per hour wind gusts to

01:38 - be the strongest recorded thunderstorm gust

01:41 - since nineteen eighty three

01:42 - and the strongest gusts since record keeping

01:44 - began in south Dakota in two thousand and three

01:47 - a storm prediction center also predicted the gas to be verified as the fifteenth

01:51 - strongest produced by a thunderstorm in us history

01:54 - clean up is still underway for the state as more thunderstorm

01:57 - are expected this week.

01:59 - Next up is hashtag American heat wave

02:02 - just weeks after Europe experienced record breaking heat the united states was faced

02:06 - with it's own bout of scorching temperatures in the days

02:08 - leading up to it's two hundred and fiftieth birthday

02:11 - last week over half of the nation's population

02:13 - was placed under heat alerts for multiple days

02:16 - as temperatures soar did the triple digits in twenty

02:18 - states across the central and eastern united states

02:21 - on Thursday numerous cities reported record breaking heat

02:25 - at the Washington national airport in DC a record daily

02:27 - temperature of one hundred and two degrees was reported

02:30 - breaking the previous records of one hundred and one

02:33 - set in eighteen ninety eight

02:35 - Philadelphia measured three straight days of one hundred one degrees or higher

02:38 - for the first time ever since record keeping began in eighteen seventy three

02:43 - state college tied it's all time highest low temperature of seventy seven degrees

02:47 - with many other places also tying or beating their highest low temperatures

02:52 - on Thursday evening more than two hundred

02:54 - thousand customers were without power in the u s

02:56 - with electrical grid operators issuing alerts to customers across the mid Atlantic

03:01 - amid concerns about the heat strain on the power grid

03:04 - the heat continued into the holiday weekend disrupting independence day festivities

03:08 - multiple cities reported their hottest fourth of July on record

03:11 - leading to the cancellation of celebrations in multiple locations new Jersey has

03:16 - reported at least two dozen suspects the heat related deaths so far

03:19 - with more deaths reported in states such as Illinois and Mississippi

03:23 - but he is expected to break going into this week with a return to more average summer

03:27 - like conditions forecasted for the areas affected

03:30 - and finally we have hashtag western wildfires

03:33 - fourth of July weekend looked a lot different for residents in the western united

03:37 - states as f fireworks shows were cancelled due to wildfires that continue to burn

03:41 - last week fires were reported in Utah Arizona Colorado and new Mexico

03:46 - the state of Utah has faced the largest devastation

03:48 - with Cruz currently battling eleven fires that span across

03:51 - almost three hundred and thirty thousand acres of land

03:54 - the cottonwood fire is in Utah is the largest

03:57 - burning one over ninety five thousand acres

03:59 - of fire which has been forty seven percent contained

04:02 - is also the most destructive in Utah history

04:05 - costing over twenty million to fight

04:06 - and destroying over one hundred and fifty structures so far

04:10 - in San Juan county Utah the Babylon fire has

04:12 - grown to the second largest fire in the nation

04:15 - burning over ninety thousand acres of land and

04:17 - remaining zero per cent contained as of this morning

04:20 - an unusually warm and dry winter caused a record low snow pack out west

04:24 - making land highly combustible while responders continue to battle the flames

04:28 - officials encourage people to monitor air quality in areas near the fires

04:32 - and those are this week's hashtag headlines

04:34 - are Pennsylvania short range forecast is coming up next.

05:01 - It's been a very active twenty four hours across the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and

05:05 - let's take a look back to starting off around one o'clock on Sunday when

05:09 - the thunderstorms began blossoming in the Laurel highlands and some others out in

05:13 - Ohio begin moving into Pennsylvania activity really got going as we went through the

05:17 - mid to late afternoon hours couple inches of rain fell in about one to two hours time

05:22 - in state college our wettest day in more than a few years

05:25 - more heavy rain and severe thunderstorms traversing from west to east including some

05:30 - tornado worn storms one of which included the city of Harrisburg for awhile

05:34 - into Sunday night everything evolved into a steady high heavy

05:37 - rain in much of eastern Pennsylvania up into the poconos

05:40 - before that batch moved off to the east fairly quiet start to Monday and then

05:45 - more rain began to blossom as we went through the day and this afternoon with some

05:48 - daytime heating here we go with more thunderstorms and downpours

05:52 - in western Pennsylvania the set up here has

05:55 - been a stationary front that is basically parked

05:58 - right over Pennsylvania and a few ripples of low pressure tracking right over it

06:03 - there was one last night this is last evening

06:05 - focusing that badge of steady to heavy rain

06:08 - and then as we went through the day today

06:09 - that went over into new Jersey and new England focusing heavy rain in fact a bjs

06:14 - wholesale club had a roof collapse in new

06:16 - Jersey saw some pretty harrowing video of that

06:19 - this afternoon here's the next ripple of low

06:21 - pressure sparking those storms in western pa

06:24 - as we get into tomorrow

06:26 - that's going to be the trend again for Tuesday any semblance of a swirl is here

06:30 - across western Pennsylvania that will once again

06:32 - be the focus of any showers and downpours tomorrow

06:35 - by Wednesday this entire front should finally get a push to the south and aside from

06:41 - extreme southwest Pennsylvania on Wednesday we're just enough moisture

06:45 - and just enough lift will remain

06:47 - that is the best chance of a lingering shower or storm Wednesday

06:50 - otherwise we should really start to see things improve so the trend

06:54 - is for less and less downpour and thunderstorm activity

06:57 - one for the next couple of days

06:59 - south of that stalled front though it is very humid dew points in the sixties and

07:03 - seventies across the commonwealth so that area you can wear feel out there

07:07 - however because of a lot of clouds and an onshore flow at the surface it's not that

07:12 - warm whereas some sun came out today in the west

07:14 - temperatures did manage the mid eighties but elsewhere it's

07:16 - seventies if not

07:18 - struggling to get out of the sixties across portions of the poconos

07:21 - and the northern lehigh valley is going to be a

07:23 - very similar setup as we get into Tuesday not warm

07:26 - but still very humid as we remain on the south side

07:30 - of this stuck front you can pretty much see where that front is focusing all of the

07:34 - action right now from the eastern great lakes Pennsylvania is really the heart of it

07:38 - and then over into southern new England

07:40 - eventually by the time we get to Wednesday we

07:42 - will start to get into this drier air to our north

07:45 - once we do that's when the sun comes back dew

07:47 - points will actually head down a little bit

07:50 - but temperatures will then head

07:51 - up a little bit it'll feel much more comfortable and more like it should

07:56 - for this point in July

07:58 - so here as the weather set up tonight there's those

08:00 - a couple ripples of low pressure along the front

08:03 - as we head into the day on Tuesday you'll notice that the next one will once again be

08:07 - lurking near southwestern Pennsylvania that's why that's the part of the commonwealth

08:11 - that I think showers and downpours will be focused once again

08:14 - and then as I mentioned on Wednesday some high

08:16 - pressure should begin to nose in from the north

08:19 - pushing the front to the south aside from a shower in

08:21 - the Laurel highlands Wednesday afternoon I think that

08:24 - at the moment it looks like the pick of the week

08:26 - tonight though moisture abounds thunderstorms and downpours especially south and west

08:31 - early if you don't see rain you're going to see

08:33 - some misty conditions it's going to be humid

08:35 - and some patchy dense fog out there as well all in all pretty soupy night tonight

08:40 - for tomorrow clouds will dominate most of the state drizzle a couple of showers

08:44 - across much of the east that's just about it

08:46 - but on the cool side only in the seventies

08:49 - the best chance for thunderstorms and downpours will

08:51 - once again be the southwestern corner of the commonwealth

08:54 - meanwhile some of that dry air I think starts working into the north west where it

08:57 - could turn into be a half day decent afternoon

09:00 - that's a sign of things to come on Wednesday were

09:01 - especially in the north they will be rather bright

09:04 - some stubborn clouds and maybe just a spotty shower

09:07 - in the south the extended forecast.

09:10 - And i.

09:33 - The extended forecast takes us through the second

09:35 - half of this week and into the upcoming weekend

09:38 - after the big heat that we had for our independence day weekend I see that staying at

09:42 - bay during this period temperatures likely right around seasonable levels

09:46 - I think we'll see more chances for rain at least to begin

09:49 - days three through seven more on that in just a moment first we'll dive right in and

09:52 - take a look at the upper air pattern

09:54 - on the European model

09:55 - what a pattern like this tells me is that we won't see the big heat here that we had

09:59 - recently with that big Ridge of high pressure across the eastern seaboard

10:02 - in fact I think we'll see a boundary that is still

10:04 - making it's way south we're going into Thursday

10:07 - and eventually crossing going into our Friday

10:10 - that will bring us some chances for scattered rain and storms and

10:13 - with this being

10:14 - hoover once again we could be looking at the

10:15 - potential for some locally heavy rainfall

10:18 - as we wrap up our workweek now as we go into the upcoming weekend notice

10:21 - big Ridge begins to build across the American

10:23 - west the desert southwest and the rockies will

10:26 - really be feeling the heat I think as we go into this weekend

10:29 - this pattern here across the northeast looks to be

10:32 - a fairly dry going into Saturday just on ice isolated shower chance and temperatures

10:36 - seasonable or even slightly below average in some spots

10:39 - and will keep that pattern and places we are

10:41 - going to Sunday and Monday Ridge to holding

10:43 - off to our west for I think the corn belt maybe baking by early next week but

10:47 - generally speaking our winds coming from a northerly

10:49 - direction here by Monday and mainly dry with high pressure

10:52 - in control the surface on sun day and Monday during this period

10:56 - precipitation tracker on the European model shows

10:59 - scattered shower and thunderstorm chances on Thursday once again that'll be the case

11:02 - on Friday the weather prediction center highlighting the potential for

11:06 - locally heavy rain especially in western Pennsylvania on

11:09 - Thursday and Friday so keep that in mind with a recently saturated soils

11:13 - after the rainfall though we had this past weekend.

11:16 - On Saturday a spotty shower can't be rolled out but is looking mainly dry

11:20 - by the time we get to Sunday and Monday favoring dry here

11:23 - some different solutions on the American gfs model keeping us

11:27 - on the wet side with a quick moving area of low pressure but I'm not buying that

11:30 - it's an outlier solution and the European model

11:33 - and Canadian models are green on a drier solution

11:35 - with high pressure in charge here should be on the

11:38 - more comfortable side after a stretch of muggy days

11:40 - Thursday and Friday dew points may be in the sixties and seventies

11:44 - on a widespread note across the commonwealth before

11:46 - we see some relief begin to build in on Saturday

11:49 - more comfortable conditions come Sunday

11:51 - and Monday in this period so a breakdown of the extended forecast shows temperatures

11:55 - in the eighties on the seasonable side

11:57 - for Thursday will be muggy though the scattered

11:59 - rainstorms that chance continues into Friday

12:02 - both days could see some locally heavy rain in the west

12:04 - Saturday decreasing clouds and humidity with the

12:06 - passage of that cold front just a spotty shower chance

12:09 - dryer mainly comfy I think for Sunday and Monday temperatures mainly in the seventies

12:14 - and eighties will scattered clough cause with some uncertainty

12:16 - by then that's your extended forecasts were back in just a moment with more.

12:21 - Hmm.

12:31 - If there is one word to describe tonight it is moist if you're not seeing

12:35 - thunderstorms and downpours like much of western pa there's going to be some misty

12:39 - and drizzly conditions it's going to be humid statewide and

12:42 - some patchy dense fog will begin developing as well

12:45 - lows from the mid sixties to the low seventies

12:48 - overnight tonight

12:49 - as we head into Tuesday lessen the way of thunderstorms and downpours but if there's

12:53 - there's an area where they will be concentrated again

12:56 - I think it is southwestern Pennsylvania for the eastern two thirds of the state

13:00 - clouds will damen eight there could still be some drizzle or spotty showers

13:03 - temperatures held back in the seventies courtesy of that onshore flow

13:07 - meanwhile far north and west I think some dryers starts to win out where it could

13:11 - actually turn into a partly sunny

13:12 - late afternoon that's a sign of things to come

13:14 - for Wednesday which is what I'm calling right now

13:17 - the pick of the week aside from some stubborn clouds and a spotty shower or two south

13:21 - it starts to become bright

13:23 - and with the sun coming back temperatures returning to more seasonable conditions for

13:27 - everyone for this time of the year not gonna lie though it is kind of nice to not see

13:30 - triple digits on the map for a change wholeheartedly agree with you there
