00:33 - yeah it'll change a bit we'll get a little more humid

00:36 - tomorrow not quite as cool tonight as it was last night

00:39 - and typical summer weather I'd say is coming up

00:42 - alright we'll hear more about that in bill short range forecast on the show tonight

00:46 - also on the show tonight will have the extended

00:48 - forecast taking us into the beginning of July

00:51 - as well as a new weather-wise about the FIFA world cup

00:54 - but first over to bell.

00:56 - Thanks very much Caitlin and we'll start by looking at a time lapse over the

01:01 - in under construction beaver stadium you could watch the

01:03 - crane move and you can watch the cumulus clouds develop

01:06 - and you can watch the sun come up

01:08 - heats the ground a little bit some of the moisture in

01:11 - answers into those nice fair weather is your classic fair

01:13 - weather cumulus not deep enough to produce precipitation

01:17 - generally moving from north

01:18 - to south across the screen and they will fade

01:21 - for a time this evening before clouds

01:24 - tend to increase.

01:25 - Once again later tonight

01:27 - as visible satellite imagery is a little special we've we've darkens it up so you

01:31 - could see the fog in the river valleys early this morning

01:34 - that melted away and then the cumulus clouds developed and there they are

01:38 - drifting off

01:39 - to the southeast

01:40 - so I always like these visible images you can also

01:42 - see the clear sky along the lake erie shoreline

01:47 - But no thunderstorms no precipitation

01:49 - across the commonwealth

01:50 - today

01:51 - temperatures not too far from average

01:54 - mid seventies in the central counties low seventies an

01:56 - area with little bit of a cooling breeze off the lake

02:01 - low eighties and southeastern pa about you know maybe a degree or two below average

02:05 - but all in all a pretty easy to take

02:08 - across the country the same idea no extremes I mean Phoenix la that's extreme but

02:12 - it's not really out of the ordinary for Phoenix at this time of year

02:18 - not hard to take for them a salt lake city little above average but all in all

02:22 - temperatures fairly mellow for June

02:25 - ninety in Florida

02:27 - eighties here

02:28 - yeah

02:28 - not hard to take.

02:30 - Satellite imagery and radar combine show a couple of swirlies a departing storm

02:34 - system all in the Canadian maritimes

02:37 - a weak low pressure system over Minnesota

02:40 - that's what's going to affect our weather next couple of days as it drifts by

02:44 - to our north

02:45 - a scattered showers and thunderstorms over the rockies

02:47 - generally in the afternoon hours they tend to fade

02:50 - overnight and then the

02:51 - constants gratis over the

02:53 - pacific ocean

02:54 - where the water is chilly

02:55 - and the surfers have to wear wetsuits to be comfortable weather map tonight shows

03:01 - that low pressure area over Minnesota that will slowly move westward will or eastward

03:05 - excuse me we'll we'll talk about that in a minute

03:07 - the departing storm system then a weak area of low pressure

03:10 - with a cold front combined mine that will produce some severe weather

03:14 - in the central and southern plains

03:16 - over the next day or so

03:18 - but this an emotion

03:19 - can watch the precipitation fade overnight and

03:21 - then redevelop again during the day tomorrow

03:24 - showers and storms will develop in western and central Pennsylvania

03:28 - and gradually move to the south and east overnight as they fade away

03:32 - to the west there's more

03:33 - heavy weather in

03:35 - the southern plains once again this is the time of year

03:38 - for that.

03:39 - We move ahead to the next day you can watch that front

03:42 - slide by a weak cold front sliding by to the east and I think Friday will tend to be

03:46 - a drier day across the commonwealth

03:49 - as

03:50 - The front stalls and then

03:51 - begins to move northward once again and threatens us with more rain

03:55 - later Friday into Saturday

03:56 - upper level pattern shows that week a trough

04:00 - moving by to our north and then

04:01 - you can just see a hint

04:03 - of the lines pushing northward the warm colors advancing

04:06 - northward that's a sign of things to come I think

04:09 - and there's talk of a heatwave next week we'll see see if Rob

04:13 - agrees with that

04:17 - Not far from average temperatures generally in the fifties mid sixties in

04:20 - Philadelphia near sixty and eerie

04:22 - late tonight there'll be some showers in Northwestern Pennsylvania most of the rest

04:26 - of us should stay dry with increasing cloudiness

04:29 - not as cool as

04:30 - last night as well

04:32 - Thursday

04:33 - again not far from average that we some

04:35 - isolated thunderstorms.

04:37 - During the afternoon that will get severe

04:40 - especially in western Pennsylvania

04:42 - most will not experience that

04:43 - strong winds of the threat with the thunderstorms

04:46 - could shower anytime in Northwestern Pennsylvania late

04:49 - day showers and thunderstorms in the eastern counties

04:52 - temperatures in the upper eighties in Philadelphia seventies

04:54 - to the north and west and then Friday the

04:57 - sun will come out

04:59 - more in the north as temperatures stay in the seventies

05:01 - to the south some showers will redevelop

05:04 - in southwestern Pennsylvania temperatures near seventy eight in Pittsburgh

05:07 - mid eighties in Philadelphia

05:09 - and we'll be back with east ended forecast

05:37 - Today's edition of the extended forecast takes us through the final days of June

05:40 - already can you believe it this is that time of the year

05:43 - when we're talking about pool season in Pennsylvania

05:45 - as we near that climatological peak in terms of temperature

05:48 - I think we'll see some increasing temperatures through this period

05:51 - starting off unsettled and then more poor weather on the way

05:55 - going into the mid part of next week weak

05:57 - first let's take a look at the upper air pattern on the European models we

06:00 - have

06:00 - pride of break things down in this extended period the trough that we've had across

06:04 - the northeast which has kept big heat at bay

06:06 - does begin to relax a bit as begun to the second half the weekend

06:10 - we see a more amplify Ridge take hold across the mid west and

06:13 - a deepening trough with this bowling ball of energy diving in

06:16 - across the pacific northwest they'll seize on the nautilus chill there

06:20 - as we go into the first half of next week meanwhile

06:22 - this Ridge continues to amplify just off to our west

06:25 - I think we'll keep the heat at bay at least

06:27 - until Monday and then by Tuesday and Wednesday

06:30 - our temperatures continue to increase and will likely be above average in

06:33 - Pennsylvania by the time we get to

06:35 - the final days of June.

06:37 - Here's a look at our precipitation tracker I mentioned

06:39 - that the weekend will begin on an unsettled note

06:42 - we're going to be watching a boundary that

06:44 - stalls just right along the Mason Dixon line

06:46 - that will be the catalyst for a few pop up showers and storms as we go into Saturday

06:50 - best chance is going to be

06:51 - areas south of I eighty off to the north I think you'll even see some breaks of

06:55 - sunshine as we go into Saturday afternoon and

06:57 - the chances for

06:58 - rain dissipate as we go into Saturday night and

07:00 - Sunday is probably going to be the pick of the weekend

07:03 - dry conditions with high pressure eventually anchored over the northeast come Monday

07:07 - Tuesday and Wednesday when reduce the chance for an isolated shower or to

07:11 - us that some of those may pop up on Tuesday more isolated chance and northern areas

07:15 - more widespread chance for some pop

07:17 - thunder showers

07:18 - by Wednesday but all in all the first half of next week

07:21 - is looking mainly dry for the keystone state

07:23 - the humidity tracker reveals

07:25 - some of the McGee's dew points at least in the sixties in southern Pennsylvania to

07:29 - begin the weekend with those rain chances

07:31 - and then overall comfort I think by the time we get to Sunday

07:33 - and Monday dew points mainly in the fifties

07:36 - across the state.

07:38 - Notice the soupy air still situated

07:40 - in the mid west by Monday dew points in the seventies that will slowly

07:44 - increase it's way in coverage eastward by the time we get to Tuesday and Wednesday

07:48 - some places especially in the west could see do points

07:50 - in the seventies by then the McGee's are on the way

07:54 - by the middle of next week

07:55 - here's a breakdown of our extended forecasts brighter

07:57 - and northern Pennsylvania to begin the weekend

07:59 - off and on rain and thunderstorms especially south of I eighty

08:03 - chances dissipated by Saturday night temperature

08:05 - is below average to begin the weekend

08:07 - seasonable by Sunday we'll see scattered clouds and comfortable conditions

08:10 - mainly dry for Sunday dry on Monday temperatures in the eighties for all

08:15 - we'll see partly cloudy skies for that final day of June should see highs in the mid

08:18 - eighties to lower nineties are just a bit above average

08:21 - becoming muggy as we go through Tuesday and also

08:23 - an isolated shower chance in northern Pennsylvania

08:26 - and then on Wednesday a mix of clouds and sunshine mid eighties to mid nineties

08:30 - with a few pop up thundershowers possible by then

08:33 - that's your extended forecast will be back in

09:09 - the one hundred and four match is needed to decide the winner

09:12 - are spread across sixteen venues

09:14 - two in Canada

09:15 - eleven in the united states and three in Mexico

09:18 - four of the stadiums in Atlanta Dallas Houston

09:22 - and Vancouver

09:23 - have retractable roofs

09:25 - well so far stadium in I a has a canopy but is open on the sides

09:29 - that leaves eleven venues where play is truly outside

09:33 - and thus weather can intervene.

09:35 - There's already been a lightning delay in the France Iraq match on Monday in

09:39 - Philadelphia but the greater weather concern is probably heat

09:42 - and humidity

09:44 - to measure heat stress on the athletes FIFA uses a measure called the wet bulb

09:48 - globe temperature.

09:50 - Because it accounts for temperature humidity and sunshine.

09:54 - Let's start with the wet ballpark

09:56 - say you know the temperature t

09:58 - and the dewpoint d of the air and remember the higher

10:01 - the dewpoint the more uncomfortable the humidity

10:04 - now imagined rain

10:05 - falling into the air

10:06 - and some of the drops will evaporate which cools the air so

10:10 - falls

10:10 - but evaporation puts more water vapor in the air so the dewpoint goes up

10:15 - and eventually the temperature and the dew point meet

10:17 - and that's the wet bulb temperature

10:19 - so it's related to both heat

10:21 - and humidity

10:22 - the glow part comes from a globe thermometer

10:25 - a hollow copper sphere

10:27 - painted black with a thermometer inside

10:29 - the quantum five the effect of sunshine on temperature.

10:33 - Now to get the wet bulb globe temperature you add

10:36 - seventy percent of the wet bulb temperature

10:38 - twenty percent of the globe temperature

10:40 - and ten percent

10:42 - of the regular temperature

10:43 - FIFA uses this blend of heat

10:46 - humidity and sunshine

10:47 - to decide if weather is adversely affecting the app athletes

10:51 - now when the wet bulb globe temperature reaches

10:54 - about seventy nine degrees fahrenheit which I know isn't a big number but remember

10:58 - this is a different measuring scale

11:00 - mandatory cooling brakes

11:02 - are recommended and in this world cup for the first time

11:06 - teams get a three minute hydration break each half

11:09 - now once the wet bulb globe temperature gets to around

11:12 - eighty two

11:13 - the players'

11:14 - union recommends delaying or postponing matches

11:18 - though FIFA's official threshold

11:21 - has historically been

11:23 - eighty six or higher.

11:25 - Of the first twenty four matches of the world cup

11:27 - two were played at outdoor venues where the wet bulb globe temperature

11:31 - at kickoff hit that eighty two

11:34 - threshold

11:34 - a match in Monterrey Mexico on June fourteenth

11:37 - and one in Miami on June fifteenth but those games went on as scheduled.

11:42 - There are five more games in Miami

11:44 - including one this evening

11:46 - of all the locations that's where I'd be most concerned about the impact

11:50 - of heat and humidity.

11:52 - The world cup final was on Sunday July nineteenth at

11:56 - three pm outside at met life stadium in new Jersey.

12:01 - will be in Brazil in June and July

12:04 - which is their

12:05 - cool season.

12:50 - central counties that should wait until afternoon

12:54 - temperatures within a few degrees of eighty

12:56 - across much of the state you get to Philadelphia

12:58 - get closer to ninety and then on Friday

13:01 - it'll cool off just a bit

13:03 - it'll probably stay dry in northeastern Pennsylvania

13:06 - best chance of rain it'll be in southwestern Pennsylvania late in the day

13:09 - with temperatures generally move moving into the seventies most of the time

13:14 - yeah so for some people that comfortable some

13:16 - people a bit hot some people a bit stormy

13:19 - seems like a mixed bag

13:21 - for many

13:21 - it's summer in Pennsylvania
