PIAA update with Mark Byers, Executive Director at PIAA; and interviews with the two fastest women in PA, Kaddel Howard and Amirah Nesmith.
00:11 - Thank you for joining us inside the lines i'm Corey Clark.
00:15 - This month we're going to
00:16 - get an update on the p o w a from the new p edible
00:20 - executive director Mark buyers who joins us from our camp hill studio.
00:25 - Thank you for asking me
00:26 - coming in
00:27 - it but my apologies thank you for having me.
00:31 - And
00:32 - so markets your first season as in this new position
00:35 - you've been around for a while but now as the head man
00:39 - how is your first year
00:40 - gone
00:41 - i think will
00:42 - started January one
00:44 - and was fortunate
00:45 - to.
00:46 - Inherit a fantastic staff
00:49 - a strong board
00:50 - i feel privileged that they put me in this position.
00:54 - So starting January one went through the winter sports season
00:57 - it was a little different.
00:59 - Not being a tournament director and having.
01:02 - An idea of everything that's happening what's taking place throughout the course of
01:06 - the tournament that's been a change for me
01:09 - but I've really enjoyed watch and the people on our staff grow and and making
01:13 - different relationships across the state with our schools.
01:17 - Right a different perspective what what events
01:21 - were you usually running up to this point
01:24 - i think the first time that it hit me is when we add our team championships and
01:28 - in the past I've been tournament director and responsible for
01:32 - everything from soup to nuts
01:34 - and walking onto the floor for our quarter finals
01:37 - and not knowing exactly which teams are on which mats
01:40 - the schedule just not having that intimate
01:42 - knowledge of the event was something i didn't like
01:45 - and
01:46 - but
01:46 - we have great staff Keenan us and Alex mica
01:50 - ran the event to perfection and it was nice to sit back and watch other people do it.
01:58 - Alright so one issue that's come up.
02:01 - Here and right as you
02:03 - take the
02:04 - take the job is.
02:06 - There being legislation to allow there to be separate playoff system so
02:12 - and
02:12 - to this point
02:14 - basically the PR w i could not have
02:17 - separate playoffs for a private
02:19 - versus public or
02:21 - boundary versus non boundary schools right that was
02:24 - that was
02:25 - basically legislation or there was legislation against it
02:29 - can you talk about.
02:30 - The the pending
02:32 - now there's pending legislation that would allow it at his pass the house
02:36 - still not through the senate but is there.
02:39 - What would be the next step if it were to pass the senate
02:42 - so if it were to pass the senate
02:44 - the current language
02:45 - of the bill provides that we would have open meetings
02:48 - across the state and each of our twelve districts
02:51 - not only representatives of be audibly but representatives of the oversight council.
02:56 - Will have the it would provide for the opportunity for public input
03:00 - and following
03:01 - each of those twelve meetings
03:03 - then we bring back that information to the board of directors
03:06 - ultimately for them to make a decision.
03:09 - There are three different determinations in the current
03:12 - bill that could be provided one is to separate all sports
03:15 - in post season
03:16 - another is to separate particular sports
03:19 - and the final is to do nothing.
03:22 - And the board is to provide rationale when they come out of executive session.
03:26 - For
03:27 - you know the reasons that they made the determination that they do.
03:32 - Have you gotten any indication
03:34 - because this is an issue that has been around for awhile but we've sure
03:38 - this is probably the first legislative
03:41 - movement that we've seen on this
03:44 - have you got any any indication as to.
03:48 - Where the consensus would lean and in this case
03:53 - cause you've heard you've heard from people on both sides of this
03:56 - and.
03:58 - What what do you think it would lean at this point
04:01 - yeah i think the the house vote shows us that
04:03 - from a statewide percentage you know that
04:06 - didn't get passed one seventy three to twenty eight so.
04:10 - Looking at the support that it had in the house.
04:13 - There obviously seems to be some statewide sentiment
04:16 - in that direction it's
04:18 - certainly not a new issue i started in ninety nine and every time there
04:22 - appears to be success above and beyond what the percentage of our
04:26 - in in the term of the bill what non boundary schools have in our playoffs
04:31 - areas it's ugly it.
04:36 - Another issue that we've talked about on this program but not with you
04:40 - in particular
04:41 - is
04:42 - Anya name image and likeness can you talk about the
04:46 - piano ablaze role in that
04:48 - and what you've seen
04:51 - and
04:51 - since his
04:52 - senses
04:53 - dentist tutored
04:54 - sure it's now been a
04:56 - few years that and i l as is permitted
04:59 - by
05:00 - paytable a student athletes i was a change to our amateur status rule allowing them
05:04 - to take advantage of their name image and likeness
05:07 - i think the.
05:10 - Unanticipated.
05:12 - Role that Anya has played is that you've see it in sports that
05:15 - maybe weren't considered
05:17 - at the onset of this we see a lot of.
05:20 - Female athletes
05:21 - that are sponsored in the sports like track and field or cross country
05:25 - or male athletes in similar sports
05:28 - with the strength of wrestling and in np
05:29 - Pennsylvania we certainly see it there as well
05:32 - but i think as a whole
05:35 - the sky hasn't fallen
05:36 - since the advent of this we certainly weren't the first California goes back to the
05:41 - early to mid two thousands
05:43 - in a relationship that they have with their screen actors guild
05:46 - allowing students to benefit from name image and likeness
05:50 - but
05:51 - i think we've had success in our student athletes have
05:53 - have been able to benefit from it.
05:58 - You mentioned the female athletes so let's talk about the current status of
06:03 - flag football in Pennsylvania where do we stand
06:08 - with flag football as a PR double a sport
06:10 - sure
06:11 - after
06:13 - flag football received a one hundred schools sponsoring
06:16 - law last year the board voted to assume jurisdiction over the sport
06:19 - so it is a piano play sport as we stand this.
06:23 - Twenty five twenty six school year was really a
06:26 - intermediary step
06:28 - that allowed sponsorship at the school level for us to
06:31 - register officials host contests
06:34 - but it concluded with
06:36 - what
06:36 - we would call the regular season but
06:39 - no a championship was held.
06:41 - Memorial day weekend
06:43 - and next year
06:45 - beginning in the spring of twenty seven we
06:47 - will host our first championships and that's
06:49 - scheduled if my memory is correct for
06:52 - June fifth of next year.
06:55 - So it'll be a spring sport
06:58 - a little end around the same time as
07:00 - what we have coming up next weekend with lacrosse and
07:04 - and
07:05 - the other spring sports yes
07:08 - the intention is on that that first weekend following the
07:11 - memorial day holiday where we have track and field and
07:14 - boys his singles and doubles tennis
07:16 - will crown our first
07:17 - girls flag football champion.
07:22 - And the girls wrestling where do we stand with that how how is that going
07:27 - they're awesome
07:28 - i dunno how else to explain it but
07:30 - this has been the third year of the championships
07:33 - certainly came in with fanfare.
07:36 - We adopted the emerging sport
07:38 - policy because of the
07:40 - em media growth of girls wrestling
07:42 - but anyone that's been in attendance at the giant center and seen them compete it
07:47 - certainly is not a novelty they are exceptional athletes they come to compete
07:51 - and we're excited to crown
07:53 - those thirteen champions alongside our boys and both double a and triple a
07:58 - and.
07:59 - Just the the level of ca competition continues to
08:01 - rise on an annual basis and we continue to see a rise
08:05 - in the amount of girls participating.
08:10 - I talk about the
08:13 - one more issue
08:14 - has been
08:15 - officials
08:17 - and
08:18 - how is piazza blade doing when it comes to officials recruitment
08:23 - status levels because we just talked about two new sports
08:26 - and
08:27 - how are we doing with keeping up with
08:29 - the amount of.
08:31 - Of games that have to be officiated
08:33 - sure i
08:34 - i look at
08:35 - girls flag football we now have over or five
08:37 - hundred officials registered for that sport
08:40 - as we continue to see growth across the state
08:43 - you're going to see that number to
08:44 - continue to rise
08:46 - but i'm happy to report that
08:48 - due to the efforts of peg gephardt and Alex Mike it in our office but also
08:53 - individuals that are across the more than four hundred
08:55 - and fifty chapters across the state Accra os all sports
08:59 - we now have over fifteen thousand
09:01 - registrations.
09:03 - It's the highest number that pitiable has ever had
09:06 - and we still need more.
09:10 - So what should someone do if they
09:13 - were interested in becoming an official
09:15 - and and what kinds of
09:16 - people should.
09:18 - Should think about doing this who would be a prime candidate for
09:22 - becoming a piano Billy official you know we run the gamut
09:25 - every
09:26 - individual person every demographic IQ across the state
09:29 - is a registered official.
09:31 - L from
09:32 - whatever walk of life that
09:34 - they decide
09:35 - we've been fortunate we also have a junior officials program so individuals that are
09:39 - currently in school that are sixteen years of age or older.
09:43 - They have the ability to officiate junior high contests
09:46 - those events that have ninth grade or below low
09:49 - so we would certainly welcome that
09:51 - anyone that has an interest not only in
09:54 - athletics
09:55 - but also in supporting their local schools.
09:57 - It's a great way to spend a day
10:00 - and individuals that officiate
10:02 - they're certainly not doing it for the money some of them
10:05 - do well with a number of contests they have but.
10:09 - Occasion
10:10 - is something that they're involved because they love spending
10:12 - time with kids being on the field working with coaches
10:15 - working with their fellow officials
10:17 - so it doesn't matter if you're male female
10:21 - doesn't matter your age demographic
10:23 - anyone that has an active interest in athletics
10:26 - should think about being involved and especially those that may be of ale bullet at
10:30 - three forty five in the afternoon
10:31 - and may be our our.
10:34 - Biggest challenge is the growth in middle school and junior high sports
10:38 - is not only the growth in the number of teams that are taking place but that just
10:41 - brings about a growth in the number of games
10:44 - and for a lot of people that are working nine to five getting there at three forty
10:47 - five in the afternoon can be a challenge.
10:50 - So i would encourage anyone that
10:51 - maybe once a part time job
10:54 - to become a registered official because those afternoons
10:57 - can certainly be worthwhile for him.
11:02 - Before we started you were talking about.
11:05 - Your philosophy when it comes to PR w a and
11:08 - and
11:09 - talk about the the amount of athletes and that you guys have.
11:16 - Effect so at the senior eye level we just ran these reports yesterday so we're about
11:21 - three hundred and twenty three thousand student athletes.
11:24 - That participate but Pennsylvania is unique not every state association our
11:28 - counterparts also have junior high middle school athletes so it's
11:31 - it certainly above that number
11:33 - but
11:34 - the abyss city for those kids.
11:37 - I'll backtrack a little bit court.
11:40 - I think we spend so much time talking about our championships
11:43 - and the twelve teams that are left are the six
11:45 - teams that are left that sometimes we lose sight
11:48 - of
11:49 - the life lessons that are being learned not only in
11:51 - the games throughout the course of the regular season
11:54 - but just spending time in practice which what could be
11:58 - twenty to twenty five
11:59 - of your best friends
12:01 - two hours a day
12:02 - having instruction learning about losing
12:05 - learning about winning how to do both properly that's what
12:09 - i think what gets lost in but what ultimately sets aside
12:12 - interscholastic based athletics
12:14 - is that they are life lessons it's not always just about winning or losing
12:19 - but about about preparing yours well for the future.
12:24 - Alright Mark and before we let you go and
12:27 - our viewers.
12:29 - Who watched our
12:30 - track and field coverage
12:32 - last week may have seen you
12:34 - as part of
12:36 - one of the ceremonies
12:37 - tell us about what happened at the track and field this year with the hall of fame
12:42 - yeah i'm
12:43 - certainly humbled
12:44 - and
12:45 - from someone that never
12:46 - threw a javelin
12:48 - ran you wouldn't want to see me run or jump.
12:51 - Never had any involvement in track and field but i was fortunate enough to be
12:55 - inducted into the Pennsylvania track and field coaches association all a fame
12:59 - because of my involvement in the championships
13:02 - and
13:03 - i had two great mentors Brad cashman and Bob lombardi before me
13:07 - that had a love for track i learned that love
13:09 - the detail of track setting that all up so I've
13:12 - I've been involve.
13:14 - Pretty regularly since two thousand and four.
13:17 - So we talked earlier about
13:18 - loosening the reigns and turning that over to
13:21 - Lindsay barnett this year but working with the coaches working with our officials
13:26 - take what gets lost in that is we have twenty eight hundred athletes.
13:30 - At our track and field championships and they're awesome kids
13:33 - are some of the best students there's some of
13:35 - the best kids that are that are in our schools
13:37 - think when Lindsay ran the numbers seventy four percent of our teams sponsoring track
13:41 - and field had a representative at our championships
13:44 - so for me it's the crown Jewel of our events
13:46 - it's representative of our membership
13:49 - and every year somebody surprises you they're just that good
13:53 - whether it's male or female athletes
13:55 - there's always somebody that's
13:56 - that just
13:57 - sets themselves apart and this year was no different.
14:00 - Having two record set in the rain
14:03 - and they're not ideal
14:04 - conditions
14:06 - but
14:06 - yeah you're kind enough to mention that i went into the hall of fame but that's
14:09 - because of the work of an awful lot more people other than just me
14:13 - i just happened to be along for the ride.
14:17 - Alright well congratulations on your induction and thank you for joining us
14:21 - thank you for having me corp.
14:23 - And now we are excited to be joined by the two fastest women and Pennsylvania.
14:30 - Mariners Smith from
14:32 - cheltenham high school and canal Howard from cedar crest.
14:36 - Ladies thank you both for joining us.
14:39 - America.
14:42 - I counted
14:44 - thirteen i think state metal
14:46 - between the two of you.
14:49 - I.
14:51 - A mirror you've been you've won the the
14:54 - the one hundred
14:55 - and the two hundred at states
14:58 - three years in a row yes and
15:01 - cadel.
15:02 - Cadel has won the four hundred.
15:06 - Every year she's ever on it at states.
15:12 - Could I'll talk about
15:14 - your mindset going into
15:16 - do.
15:17 - States this year because you
15:20 - you you set a record at district so let's go back to districts.
15:24 - The week before
15:25 - and
15:26 - how did you feel.
15:29 - When you.
15:30 - Were running at districts and you had to that
15:33 - he had
15:34 - the greatest
15:35 - run of your life.
15:37 - Well i guess Jake's
15:39 - i wasn't planning on actually running that fast spray.
15:44 - I just wanted to keep their legs
15:45 - in control just like keep
15:47 - save my legs for an estate me
15:49 - back
15:51 - and as i got out during the four hundred
15:53 - felt like i just felt really good sounds like okay remittance keep pushing.
15:58 - The orange Mark i seen
16:00 - the time and i'm like okay this is really fast i was like okay.
16:05 - For directors
16:06 - not just minus
16:08 - and
16:08 - then after sir.
16:11 - So you actually took a peek at the clock and
16:13 - pushed through the end to try to get that record
16:17 - yeah.
16:20 - But you mentioned you said you didn't want to go that hard so is there a mental thing
16:24 - of i'm going to save a little bit for states because i know i can win here.
16:31 - That was really that was
16:33 - my intention at share
16:34 - but then like
16:36 - as i was like running you know i just was in a different mode i was like okay
16:41 - you know this race is going really well it's no
16:43 - minor scratches leave it.
16:45 - All on Jack rayner.
16:49 - Amir let's talk about your approach
16:52 - because you run the one hundred and the two hundred
16:56 - and
16:56 - you also one
16:58 - at districts so do you ever think okay
17:01 - let me save a little bit for states because like i gotta keep my streak going.
17:06 - Yes.
17:08 - For
17:08 - especially the premiums they don't rewind
17:10 - as hard to for the finals for
17:13 - this year i knew that i had to
17:15 - make
17:16 - a statement because indra was hurt
17:18 - so i just wanted to think about their interest.
17:21 - In
17:21 - that area.
17:24 - What was the injury.
17:26 - My hamstring.
17:30 - I had a
17:31 - very genuine stream
17:33 - i think.
17:36 - And how long did it take you to come back from that.
17:39 - I say like a mug.
17:42 - Around there.
17:46 - So that i see a parallel here because cadel you set that record at districts
17:51 - and then you had a hamstring issue so i think you
17:54 - guys are running a little too fast for your hamstrings
17:57 - so can
17:58 - tell us about your injury when that happened and.
18:03 - How you came back for from that.
18:06 - So my injury it was actually during
18:10 - it happened during a four by four which was the last race and like i was already
18:15 - doing a lot of running cars to four hundred
18:17 - prelims to two hundred
18:18 - prelims
18:19 - so by the time i did the former Friday ran four races before that and
18:24 - i know i know my hamstring was feeling a little take so
18:27 - as soon as i got out i would say
18:29 - yeah
18:30 - it was just time
18:32 - so.
18:34 - But
18:34 - my goal was to just drink stay
18:37 - healthy
18:37 - like
18:38 - not
18:39 - do too much on it just to
18:41 - at least be able to
18:43 - differentiate
18:44 - estates i knew i wasn't going to be good for
18:46 - two hundred but as long as i got ready for
18:49 - it four hundred just to be able to bring back another title
18:52 - that was just typical.
18:56 - So Amir I'll bring you back in here did you know that was
18:58 - going on with her because you guys were set to face off
19:02 - in the two hundred at states you both
19:05 - the number one and two top qualifying times at your districts the week before
19:10 - did you know that was going on with her what did you
19:12 - what did you know about her and the two ha hundred.
19:15 - I
19:15 - said text
19:16 - well we have a group chat
19:18 - with our
19:19 - other teammates i don't see anyone and look like
19:22 - so see why she said it we all felt
19:24 - bad about it so
19:26 - she was like i'm not going around getting
19:28 - hijacked because i don't want to put any more.
19:31 - Stress on my hamstring.
19:33 - Fat or let me know
19:35 - she could have won the floor and again the flash that was
19:38 - you know.
19:39 - Is is here.
19:41 - Alright so the obvious question i have to ask is.
19:45 - If she's at full strength who wins the two hundred at states.
19:52 - I dunno.
19:53 - It depends on the
19:55 - language
19:56 - i mean like two hundred like last year indoor it was close.
20:01 - It really just depends like
20:03 - celebrities feel in the past
20:04 - exactly
20:05 - exactly.
20:09 - You guys are
20:10 - are
20:10 - modest and i appreciate that
20:13 - you're going to be teammates next year we
20:14 - you can settle all those things at practice
20:18 - in Florida so.
20:19 - That reminds me you both are headed to Florida
20:23 - and also you were telling me earlier before we started that
20:26 - you guys kind of
20:28 - even more than that a mirror where did you where did you first meet canal.
20:32 - On the track at a season Iran for my area she ran for high level.
20:39 - And cuddle how old were you guys.
20:43 - I say like.
20:44 - Nine
20:45 - return.
20:47 - I dunno
20:48 - can't really remember.
20:51 - Long ago.
20:54 - So this relationship goes back quite a ways i
20:58 - have how many times have you actually
21:00 - gone up against each other.
21:03 - I don't think we were in the same age group
21:06 - so cause the way they did it was like.
21:09 - Like nine ten eleven twelve and.
21:13 - It was like two years.
21:15 - Each time and i'm.
21:17 - On top and she's on the bottom so it was like
21:20 - yeah
21:20 - yeah.
21:24 - Alright so how does Florida yet the two fastest Pennsylvania and.
21:30 - Girls in the state that.
21:32 - Talk about how
21:34 - you ended up
21:35 - making that decision to marry you first.
21:38 - I just love the coaches
21:40 - love the team
21:42 - and love the people that i won't
21:44 - do it which was can do in Seattle so i was just
21:46 - like yeah this is where i want to be at this is
21:49 - my new home.
21:52 - You.
21:54 - Can tell your thoughts on Florida and how and how recruiting went there.
21:59 - Yeah i feel like it's the same for me like the coaches
22:03 - are all like friendly to me
22:05 - you know they always stayed in touch with me no matter
22:07 - what
22:08 - and
22:09 - the team the team was amazing Bonnie well as everyone and.
22:14 - Yeah and then the people that i went with yup
22:17 - Amir and sione
22:19 - they just made the visit more enjoyable
22:21 - i didn't know
22:22 - that they were going to
22:23 - commit to Florida so it wasn't planned
22:26 - but.
22:27 - I started feeling.
22:32 - What's that a mirror.
22:34 - Oh i was just relaxing.
22:41 - Suck Adele let's go back to the
22:44 - states we we mention that.
22:46 - You know we televise the race
22:48 - and we could see that
22:50 - you want it but then immediately you were holding that
22:53 - that that leg that hamstring you had a brace on there
22:56 - and then then.
22:58 - When we saw you on the podium
23:00 - you didn't crack a smile you didn't seem very happy so what was going through your
23:04 - mind there i mean you had won the gold
23:07 - but you seemed a little disappointed.
23:10 - I.
23:12 - Well it was already cold and it was raining so
23:15 - i already killed my mood
23:17 - and then no i knew
23:19 - i wasn't.
23:21 - Really happy with my time
23:23 - and not because it's like
23:24 - that's all.
23:26 - I could do
23:27 - but you know i just had to
23:29 - save my like you know
23:31 - just to be
23:31 - ready for nationals so.
23:34 - It was
23:35 - what was the look i really could do about it so
23:38 - but i know i could do that i knew i could have
23:40 - done better my leg
23:41 - was healthy so.
23:44 - Holding yourself to a very high standard there
23:48 - so you mentioned nationals is that what's
23:50 - next for both of you a mirror what's next for you
23:53 - or you
23:53 - know you graduated from cheltenham last night
23:56 - what's next for you on the track.
23:58 - I'm actually going to the books PR invitational
24:01 - this weekend so I'll be running there.
24:07 - And could tell you mentioned nationals when is that
24:10 - an r and how's the hamstring.
24:13 - So for me i started running so
24:15 - i'm just taking it like.
24:17 - Little steps at a time and nationalist is June sending
24:22 - teams
24:23 - to the twenty second
24:25 - and i'm doing a four hundred
24:28 - what
24:28 - you
24:29 - doing Nike
24:30 - but your twenties and Nike are
24:32 - at
24:33 - the same place
24:34 - and i'm doing the funding for your twenties and i'm doing it two hundred for.
24:39 - The high school for
24:40 - Nike.
24:44 - So when does the transition happen and you both can chime in here and you're
24:49 - technically i think canal you graduate today correct
24:53 - yeah.
24:55 - Yeah thank you for for coming on i know it's been a very busy week
24:58 - trying to get
24:59 - hold of both of your proved very difficult
25:02 - what does the transition begin
25:04 - to you being gators went
25:07 - how much longer are you technically a high school athlete.
25:13 - While we go there for like our summer session.
25:17 - June twenty third so there's not much time left.
25:21 - Yeah.
25:22 - So after nationals i fly right through Florida.
25:29 - Alright so
25:31 - what are we looking forward to in
25:33 - Florida do we know
25:35 - what events you'll be running with
25:37 - i mean you're coming in with this and this resume of all these state championships in
25:43 - your respective races Samir a
25:45 - three straight.
25:47 - In the two hundred and one and one hundred and canal four straight in
25:52 - the four hundred so
25:54 - a mirror what are we looking for
25:56 - for you at the next level what events.
26:00 - One hundred and two hundred and.
26:02 - Of course the relay
26:04 - plus maybe launch up again
26:06 - i want to try it.
26:10 - Yeah not to overlook you did you did podium in
26:14 - long jump at states
26:16 - your freshman year i think
26:18 - yes
26:18 - but then did you just stop focusing on the field stuff.
26:24 - Yeah i wasn't really getting coached
26:25 - so i'm like i might as well just focus on the track push and
26:29 - push.
26:32 - And cadet what about you at Florida where where where will the gators have you go and
26:36 - obviously the four hundred but anything else.
26:40 - I
26:41 - probably two hundred as well and i noted for my flair
26:44 - for sure.
26:48 - Four by four okay so is there any chance that we'll get.
26:52 - The two of you in a relay or something like that
26:55 - down in Florida.
26:57 - I
26:58 - put what i want.
27:00 - Oh
27:01 - they did four by four.
27:03 - Ooh
27:04 - we
27:05 - didn't do it for one hundred or so.
27:08 - Somebody's going to have to go up.
27:11 - She's going down that one hundred thank you.
27:14 - Know but
27:15 - she's already been doing it for about four years
27:17 - she'd at least like ten for about four years this year
27:20 - so i feel like she got a good foundation
27:23 - and so she can.
27:26 - Done any for my one so i can't go that really
27:28 - going to get your ready for that but i want to
27:30 - at all.
27:33 - Alright
27:34 - well that's great.
27:35 - Ladies you can have these conversations because
27:37 - as you told me you're both going to be roommates
27:40 - at Florida so hopefully
27:42 - we'll see who can convince whom
27:44 - to either go up or come down to run those relies so
27:47 - i want to thank
27:48 - both of the two fastest women in Pennsylvania i'm Aaron nesmith
