00:07 - this
00:08 - is whether world.
00:20 - Evening everyone and welcome to the world on this Monday may fourth may the fourth be
00:24 - with you twenty twenty six on robotic drawn alongside Quinn mulhern and
00:28 - Gwen out there today if you are wearing your star wars gear it was a good day to be
00:32 - outside yeah it was a beautiful day out there just a few puffy cumulus clouds but
00:36 - are some rain on the way so
00:37 - we're going to have to take advantage of today
00:39 - some changes on the way we'll get those details coming
00:41 - up in your short range forecast and just a little bit
00:43 - also coming up on the show later tonight I'll have the extended forecast that will
00:47 - take us through the upcoming weekend which includes mother's day
00:50 - but first it's a ma
00:51 - hey you're here on whether Rodgers morose or
00:52 - verger with this week's hashtag headlines.
01:04 - I'm Marissa burger and this is hashtag headlines
01:07 - our weekly look at what's been trending in weather and climate news
01:11 - will begin tonight with
01:12 - hashtag nsf
01:14 - in another blow to American science all twenty two members
01:17 - of the board that oversees the national science foundation
01:21 - were notified by email on April twenty fourth that they were quote
01:24 - to terminated effective immediately.
01:27 - The board members were made up of scientists from academia
01:30 - national labs
01:32 - nonprofits and industry
01:34 - the national science board was created in nineteen fifty
01:37 - by congress to oversee the national science foundation
01:40 - also known as nsf a board's role is to advise the president and congress and matters
01:45 - of science and engineering officials say that nsf work quote
01:49 - continues uninterrupted and quote
01:51 - however compared to this time last year
01:54 - only forty one percent of funding has been disbursed
01:57 - and compared to two years ago only thirty one percent
02:00 - this funding provides research Grant money in
02:03 - science math and engineering across the u s each year
02:06 - congress approved the funding in this year's
02:08 - budget and the president signed it into law
02:11 - yet most of the money is not actually flowing to nsf
02:14 - leading to most proposed scientific projects being in a state of limbo
02:18 - this is already having an impact in our department here at penn state
02:22 - where lack of funding is impacting grants tied to
02:24 - faculties salaries and graduate students support.
02:28 - Hashtag recent rainfall.
02:31 - Most of us have heard the saying April showers bring may flowers but this past.
02:35 - April's rain brought some improvements drought conditions
02:38 - in parts of the keystone state as well
02:40 - on Friday the Pennsylvania department of environmental
02:43 - protection's commonwealth drought task force
02:45 - announced that drought watches are no longer in effect for twenty two counties above
02:50 - normal rainfall in western and northern Pennsylvania is partially to thank
02:54 - however dry conditions still exist across much of southern and eastern Pennsylvania
02:59 - as well as the susquehanna valley
03:02 - drought watches are still hoisted in many of those locations
03:05 - while five counties
03:06 - Adams Chester cumberland Franklin and fulton
03:10 - are still currently in a drought warning
03:12 - residents in the affected areas should pay attention
03:15 - to water restrictions for the foreseeable future.
03:18 - Hashtag captured from space
03:20 - a space junkie captured mesmerizing photos and video of space junk last weak

03:35 - last Thursday he was looking out the window for
03:38 - the latest supply vehicle to come to the ship
03:40 - instead he caught a glimpse of a bright object
03:42 - that grew in length and then broke into pieces
03:46 - a fifteen second video shows streaks of bright
03:48 - light flying in tandem throughout the sky
03:51 - Williams noted that it was likely some sort of space
03:53 - junk breaking up as it entered earth's atmosphere
03:56 - he also stated that it was quote
03:58 - quite a light show
04:00 - Williams has also been experimenting with long exposure photography
04:03 - recently capturing orbital motion in the form of city lights
04:07 - as well as lightning from thunderstorms

04:15 - At astro underscore Chris w
04:19 - and those are this week's hashtag headlines
04:21 - your Pennsylvania short range forecast is coming up next.
04:39 - And.
04:47 - Well as Marisa alluded to in hashtag headlines some of us have finally had some
04:52 - drought relief with some recent rainfall
04:54 - I would expect that to be more of the case as we go through
04:57 - the middle part of this week but today
04:59 - clear skies for many across the state taking a
05:01 - look at this time lapse from penn state Dubois
05:04 - you'll notice that clear sky persist or much of the middle to late afternoon before a
05:08 - few bubbly cumulus clouds popped up
05:10 - and as we did those cumulus clouds pop up that's typically a sign that we may have
05:14 - some instability beginning to build
05:16 - which could yield a chance for a few showers
05:18 - and maybe even a few thunderstorms as well
05:20 - as we go through tonight it gets that just a
05:22 - moment but looking at the temperature right now
05:24 - as a four thirty
05:25 - across the state
05:27 - many of us are hovering in the low to mid
05:28 - seventies it feels like a very beautiful day
05:31 - out there across Pennsylvania that's quickly going to
05:33 - change as we bring that rain associate with a cold front
05:36 - as we go into tonight and the next few days but
05:39 - generally just a few puffy cumulus clouds showing up on satellite none of these have
05:43 - any re rainfall associated with them
05:45 - but as I alluded to come today I think that's going to be changing
05:48 - looking at national temps will notice that our warm air is displaced
05:51 - well across the southern united states with our cold front draped across the great
05:55 - lakes forty two degrees in international falls right now that's feeling
05:59 - much more like a late winter or early spring
06:02 - meanwhile in Chicago on the warm side of the
06:04 - you're at seventy eight and it's where we have the front president
06:07 - that we do have a few showers popping up along that front
06:10 - and further south we have a few more of those heavier showers and even a few
06:13 - thunderstorms across the Ohio river valley
06:16 - and as we push towards the northeast from that complex of showers you'll even notice
06:20 - a few of those clouds popping up over northern Ohio
06:23 - and I think those are going to be the seeds for
06:24 - the storms that were going to be experiencing
06:26 - later tonight and into the days to come
06:29 - so timing all of this our low pressure system which is bringing all of that weather
06:33 - is going to be hovering over Ontario and it's going to
06:36 - slowly move off towards the northern east and the cold front
06:39 - will begin to slowly move across the great lakes
06:41 - and with that and because it's a slow moving front
06:44 - we're going to be dealing with some prolonged periods of rain and that's going to add
06:47 - up which will be very beneficial for some of our drought relief
06:50 - and so Tuesday we're going to be dealing with those
06:52 - showers especially across Northwestern Pennsylvania
06:55 - but as we get into Wednesday it's going to be more
06:57 - so widespread across the majority of the state
06:59 - especially in the southeast where we need it for
07:02 - the our drought relief
07:03 - so looking at tonight I I think that there will be a few of these showers and
07:06 - thunderstorms popping up mainly across western Pennsylvania
07:09 - but as we go through the night I would expect a few of those isolated downpours to
07:14 - impact eastern Pennsylvania as well
07:16 - and come tomorrow I think north western Pennsylvania you're the ones that are going
07:19 - to be socked in with those clouds
07:21 - in dealing with some of those heavier showers
07:22 - and thunderstorms whereas eastern penciled aimia
07:25 - maybe just a few increasing clouds and some spotty showers but the Wednesday
07:29 - as the cold front encroaches on Pennsylvania
07:31 - many of us are going to be experiencing that rainfall and that's going to add up
07:35 - for many across the state you can look at what this
07:38 - graph model is producing for rainfall
07:40 - and you'll notice that it's the Northwestern portions where we could see upwards of
07:43 - an inch and a half of re rainfall
07:45 - across the southeast although it's not the rainfall
07:48 - that totals that we're seeing across Northwestern Pennsylvania we will at least have
07:52 - some beneficial totals
07:54 - of around a half to three quarters of an inch of rainfall
07:57 - by the time we reach Wednesday evening
08:00 - so timing everything out for the rest of tonight
08:02 - just a few overnight showers across the state mainly occur
08:05 - Northwestern Pennsylvania where we may be
08:06 - experiencing some of those rumbles of thunder as well
08:09 - lows will generally be in the mid fifties for most
08:11 - and then tomorrow as the frog gets a little bit closer
08:14 - I think we're going to increase the chance for a few of those showers and
08:17 - thunderstorms across Northwestern Pennsylvania once again
08:20 - he could see where we had those clouds is going to be cooler as well with
08:22 - temperatures in the upper sixties
08:24 - whereas it is for summer like across southeastern Pennsylvania
08:27 - and we're going to be staying dry for the most part as well with temperatures
08:31 - probably touching eighty across the lower susquehanna valley
08:34 - just a few passing clouds but Wednesday is going to be
08:37 - the widespread much needed rainfall for the southeast
08:40 - as our cold front sweeps across Pennsylvania we're going to bring the clouds we're
08:43 - going to keep temperatures lower as well Jenna really in the mid sixties for most
08:47 - and I think with the widespread rain we're going
08:49 - to see storm tolls of a half an inch to even
08:51 - an inch and a half as well so we'll be back in a moment with more.
09:15 - And.
09:23 - The extended forecast will take us through the tail
09:25 - end of this work week and into the upcoming weekend
09:28 - it really won't be feeling like early bay across the commonwealth no big heats on the
09:33 - way and several opportunities for precipitation and
09:36 - abound more on that in just a moment first we'll take a look at the water vapor
09:39 - satellite imagery to get that sense of the steering winds aloft and
09:42 - one thing we saw last week and I think we'll see again as we go through this period
09:46 - an upper level low kind of spinning over Hudson bay and we'll see a series of
09:50 - ripples of energy kind of rotating through the northeastern us
09:53 - with a pattern like this that really won't
09:55 - be the conducive for big heat to develop here
09:58 - in fact if there's an area that will see above
10:00 - average temperatures through most of this period
10:02 - is going to be
10:03 - the American west once again seeing above
10:05 - average highs going into the upcoming weekend
10:08 - meanwhile you see this trough that kind of locks in
10:10 - across the eastern us as we begin the period on Thursday
10:14 - we'll see the storm system exiting off.
10:16 - Again will put us in emotion here are a few
10:19 - ripples of energy kind of passing through as we go into the upcoming weekend
10:22 - and eventually early next week so keeping things
10:24 - unsettled I think we will see many dry moments in there
10:27 - but hard to really have a completely dry day
10:30 - with a pattern like this and hard to get any big heat to build here
10:33 - with a pattern like this as well.
10:35 - Taking a long day by day our precipitation tracker
10:37 - will stick with the European model and as I mentioned
10:40 - the storm system that you heard about from Quinn will be exiting off tour east on
10:43 - Thursday that's the cold front so if you have leftovers possible
10:47 - or starting here Thursday morning at five am
10:49 - notice we see the freeze line showing up in
10:51 - the northwest plateau I think we once again have
10:53 - the chance for some freeze frost conditions and
10:56 - parts of the app alleghenies and across
10:58 - the northern tier of Pennsylvania maybe more
11:00 - opportunities across the northwest plateau
11:03 - even going into the upcoming weekends will keep those blankets handy
11:06 - for your plants.
11:08 - As we go into Thursday if you chances are there for
11:10 - some spotty showers I think we'll hold onto that chance on
11:13 - Friday afternoon as well a few spotty thundershowers notice
11:16 - not a
11:17 - wash out but also still seeing unsettled conditions here
11:20 - as we go into the upcoming weekend I think we
11:22 - will have a more widespread chance of some showers
11:25 - for Saturday as a
11:26 - kind of a storm system passes through next one begins to
11:29 - gear up will see the arrival of precipitation Sunday afternoon
11:33 - more widespread has begun to early next week in fact some models hinting at the patel
11:37 - fuel for a coastal storm to develop
11:39 - that could bring some heavier rain to southeast Pennsylvania
11:42 - of course it would be much needed rainfall with a recent drought conditions there
11:45 - so the extended forecast shows limited sunshine on Thursday some spotty showers
11:49 - frost freeze conditions likely as we start the day on Friday
11:53 - clouds increasing there with an isolated afternoon
11:55 - thunder shower breezy going into the weekend
11:58 - off and on showers for Saturday probably a more
12:00 - widespread chance of those with some breaks of sun
12:03 - possible late in the day temperatures to below average on Saturday a little closer to
12:06 - seasonable for mother's day on Sunday
12:09 - more rain by early next week that your extended
12:11 - forecast for back and just a moment with more
12:14 - and.
12:24 - Well after a beautiful Monday across the commonwealth we're really going to begin to
12:28 - introduce some of our shower and even a few thunderstorm chances as well for tonight
12:32 - that's mainly going to be the case across Northwestern
12:34 - Pennsylvania closer to the vicinity of where are
12:37 - approaching cold front is
12:39 - and with that we will see a few showers across eastern and central Pennsylvania as
12:43 - well although I would not expect them to be be as widespread
12:46 - generally lows will be in the mid fifties for tonight
12:48 - and then as the cold front approaches on Tuesday we will begin to introduce
12:52 - a few of those heavier showers and thunderstorms
12:55 - across Northwestern Pennsylvania as well
12:57 - temps are going to be a little bit lower up there as well with
13:00 - generally topping out in the upper sixties
13:02 - well
13:03 - across southeastern Pennsylvania we're going to be field more summer-like and dry
13:06 - with temperatures in the eighties
13:08 - and Wednesday that's gonna be our most active
13:10 - day of the period as our cold front approaches
13:12 - and as the cold front approaches we will begin
13:14 - to bring in some of that more widespread rain
13:17 - and I'll tell you what Rob.
13:19 - Cross southeastern Pennsylvania we really need this
13:21 - rain so I think that's going to be a huge benefit
13:23 - especially
13:24 - ones that have for sure
13:25 - taste of summer on the way for tomorrow I think if I need to do any yard work
13:28 - tomorrow is probably the day to get that in because
13:30 - Wednesday looks like a wash out that's right
13:32 - all right well
13:33 - thank you so much for the forecast tonight and thank you for tuning in
13:36 - we'll see you back here tomorrow with a new edition of the weather wonderful
13:39 - have a good night.
