In this history and culture short, we speak with Chip Edmonds, president of Lycoming College, as he shares the origins of the school — from its start as the Williamsport Academy to its growth over time. We’ll also explore several historic buildings and landmarks that remain on campus today.
00:09 - So pcn is here at Lycoming college could you tell us where is it located
00:13 - yes so for all of your watchers across the state of Pennsylvania we are in
00:18 - williamsport Pennsylvania which is
00:20 - north central Pennsylvania here Lycoming county.
00:24 - For
00:24 - those who know Pennsylvania or even
00:27 - the
00:27 - history of this place while it is also home of the little league world series that's
00:31 - often what puts williamsport on the map
00:34 - and there's a lot of history here what did this land look like
00:37 - before the college was here
00:39 - this literally was like the outskirts of the city so like so many places in
00:43 - williamsport towns cities built up along the river
00:46 - so the susquehanna river is just below our campus
00:49 - and literally if you go back to the history and you read about when the structure was
00:54 - built here this was considered Dutch hill
00:56 - it was north of the floodplain so this was a safe place to build
01:00 - but all of the city and how it had grown was all near the water
01:04 - so if you were to stand right here
01:06 - back in the early eighteen hundreds you would have looked north
01:09 - and just seen green forest and woods this was it
01:14 - and now our campus continues to expand well north of here
01:18 - and our athletic facilities going three four
01:20 - blocks north of campus
01:22 - sounds like you have a lot of history
01:24 - Indeed we do.
01:40 - So when you're outside this
01:42 - building and
01:42 - this was built in 2019 but
01:44 - before that there were some historic buildings here
01:46 - what were they
01:47 - yes this in fact is a site of many buildings over the years in this is the oldest
01:53 - part of Lycoming college's campus
01:55 - so
01:56 - the Krapf gateway center was built in 2019 but prior to that
02:00 - there was the old brewery first the bottling plant that was here we used to
02:04 - have a science building that ultimately took that space
02:07 - we also had just over my shoulder here
02:10 - soldiers and sailors memorial hall
02:13 - so over two hundred years
02:14 - there have been
02:16 - three different buildings that have sat on this very same site
02:20 - and when we built the Krapf gateway center and opened up in 2019
02:24 - it was meant to hearken back to our earliest years as an institution
02:28 - where the front of this building faces the city
02:30 - looks outward upon the williamsport community
02:33 - and continues to strengthen the ties between
02:36 - the college
02:37 - and
02:37 - the city of williamsport
02:39 - so we call this our Krapf gateway center it really is
02:42 - where we welcome
02:44 - guests
02:44 - families
02:45 - community members
02:47 - and the like
02:48 - to be part of our academic community.
03:03 - We're now walking along Lycoming college's upper quad which is a
03:07 - some of the
03:07 - oldest traditions and history of the college date back right to this space here
03:12 - and this is our founders Plaza that helps to recognize some of that history
03:17 - and Pennsylvania has a lot of colleges and universities that have rich history
03:21 - what about
03:21 - Lycoming college.
03:23 - Lycoming dates all the way back to eighteen twelve
03:26 - and Pennsylvania had this very interesting
03:27 - phenomenon across the state of establishing academies
03:31 - this was before schools were compulsory and Lycoming college
03:35 - in its earliest stages was the williamsport academy and that's what we were for many
03:41 - years until we evolved most recently to a four year institution
03:45 - in nineteen forty seven
03:47 - and here our founders Plaza acknowledges many of those who have supported and
03:50 - and
03:51 - helped Lycoming evolve and transition into a national four yeur liberal arts college
03:57 - we also right on this space is literally where old main used to sit it was a very
04:01 - large structure three component pieces
04:04 - that were built throughout the eighteen hundreds
04:06 - on unfortunately the building fell into
04:08 - disrepair the entire structure had to be razed
04:12 - in
04:12 - nineteen sixty eight
04:14 - and now we have
04:15 - reactivated this upper quad into both founders
04:18 - Plaza and an area where many of our students
04:21 - come to study interact in fact
04:23 - this is even an outdoor classroom
04:25 - so when it's a little warmer you'll find lots
04:27 - of students out here with their faculty learning
04:29 - here on our upper quad.
04:51 - Fine Arts
04:52 - building behind us here used to be a gymnasium
04:54 - what is some of the history behind the athletics here at Lycoming college
04:58 - Lycoming college has a very rich history of athletics in fact dating all the
05:02 - way back to the mid eighteen hundreds
05:05 - and so as you mention
05:06 - this was built in nineteen twenty three this was called the hilltop gymnasium
05:11 - and it housed our basketball programs and many other.
05:16 - Athletic teams
05:17 - we had a swimming pool down in the basement it is now
05:20 - been converted
05:21 - into a wonderful fine arts building that is so
05:23 - very open as you can imagine lots of natural light
05:26 - three very large studio spaces and we do sculpting and
05:30 - iron work and all kinds of things down the basement
05:32 - where the pool used to be
05:34 - but Lycoming college continues to have a very rich athletic program
05:38 - we are an NCAA division three program we have twenty athletic teams.
05:43 - We
05:44 - also have athletic facilities that now expand all beyond
05:47 - campus
05:48 - just up
05:49 - ahead of us here is our
05:52 - athletic facility which is where basketball now competes it's where our pool is.
05:57 - It's a
05:58 - it's where all of our indoor sort of activities and recreation center and in addition
06:02 - to our athletic facilities right here on the upper quad we also have a beautiful new
06:06 - baseball field that was just completed two years ago
06:09 - a partnership with the city of williamsport and Brandon park
06:12 - and then a couple of farther
06:14 - a couple of
06:14 - blocks farther north
06:16 - we also have our
06:17 - football stadium
06:18 - our soccer lacrosse and field hockey stadium and also our softball field
06:22 - all of which contribute to our twenty
06:25 - varsity athletic programs and plus a huge range of both club
06:29 - and intramural athletic programs
06:31 - very active campus with our students.
06:45 - Just outside the chapel which holds a lot of history
06:48 - but surrounding the chapel theres other bits of
06:51 - history that you were telling me about could you share that with audience
06:54 - yes absolutely
06:56 - so Clark chapel was built in nineteen thirty nine and it was from ms Clark
07:00 - who gave
07:01 - money from her estate completely fund this building
07:04 - and it started purely as a place of worship for the campus community but has
07:09 - continued to evolve in terms of its use
07:12 - one of the most beautiful traditions that continues to take place in clark chapel
07:17 - is our Christmas candle light service which
07:19 - is a traditional service of lessons and Carols
07:21 - that takes place every December
07:24 - and so Mark your calendars for.
07:26 - The second Sunday in December if you'd like to
07:29 - come to Lycoming college we'd love to have you
07:31 - but also around Clark chapel is where some of the most
07:34 - meaningful activity takes place and that is commencement.
07:45 - For
07:46 - over one hundred years
07:48 - students have been
07:49 - graduating and launching into their lives
07:52 - right here next to Clark chapel on our main quad
07:55 - the full quad here on campus and that continues to be a vibrant place
07:59 - there's also an old historic bell that is a reproduction of the Liberty bell
08:04 - where students go and touch
08:06 - that bell
08:06 - to make sure
08:07 - they
08:08 - perform as well as they can on their tests we'll
08:10 - take advantage of every little tradition that we can
08:14 - but indeed this is a place where students gather and continue to
08:17 - engage
08:18 - in all things related to
08:21 - Lycoming college
08:22 - music making and community building
08:24 - that's it for our tour of Lycoming college i hope
08:27 - you enjoyed learning a little bit more about its history
08:29 - with president Chip Edmonds thank you so much for watching.
