(2013) National Civil War Museum presentation with David McLean, 44th Georgia Volunteers
00:01 - I am a corporal with the forty
00:02 - fourth Georgia.
00:03 - And today I'm going to show you
00:04 - the manual of arms.
00:06 - I'm a corporal. Usually I teach
00:07 - the privates how to be a soldier
00:09 - from the ground up and then from
00:12 - that point on then I take my
00:14 - instructions from the sergeant.
00:15 - So this is basically the simple
00:17 - drill that you learn from the
00:18 - manual of arms.
00:20 - You start when you're at
00:21 - attention or order arms where
00:23 - the gun is at your side and
00:24 - you're holding it close to the
00:27 - second barrel ban. The next
00:30 - command would be shoulder arms,
00:32 - which you raise the gun, you put
00:34 - one finger under the back of
00:36 - that trigger and one under the
00:38 - hammer.
00:39 - So you can actually hold the
00:40 - gun.
00:42 - And then you hold it to your
00:43 - side in the crook of your arm
00:45 - tight to your shoulder.
00:48 - The next step would be to right
00:50 - shoulder shift in which you
00:52 - raise the gun up, hold it by the
00:54 - butt, tuck your elbow in, and
00:56 - keep it high up.
00:57 - This is usually used whenever
00:59 - you do movements where you're
01:00 - doing double quick or anything
01:02 - where you're moving quickly in
01:03 - the field. You raise it that is
01:05 - position so it's out of the way,
01:06 - so you're not beating up the
01:07 - person around you.
01:09 - The next that you would bring it
01:10 - back to shoulder arms and then
01:13 - you would go to right shoulder
01:14 - shift, which is the only time
01:16 - you would actually use the left
01:17 - arm, which you shifted over your
01:20 - support with the hammer and the
01:21 - crook of your elbow and you put
01:24 - your arm up against your chest.
01:28 - Then you bring it back to
01:30 - shoulder arms again and then you
01:33 - go to order arms, which is
01:34 - attention down to the ground.
01:37 - These are just standard steps
01:38 - from the manual of arms and
01:41 - thank you for coming and
01:43 - witnessing what we do.
01:44 - In the civil war.
01:45 - Have a good day.
