(2013) National Civil War Museum presentation on Confederate soldiers belongings with George Klutzz, portrayed by Clark Vanbuskirk, Jr.
00:00 - Hi. I'm George Klutzz, a private
00:03 - in the forty fourth Georgia
00:04 - company C out of Watkinsville,
00:06 - Georgia about to show you what
00:08 - my life possessions are as a
00:10 - member of the forty fourth
00:11 - Georgia fighting in the civil
00:13 - war.
00:14 - Most important possession
00:15 - happens to be my Springfield
00:18 - rifle, 1861 58 caliber
00:21 - Springfield. Happened to be
00:23 - given this by the Georgia unit
00:26 - in order for me to protect
00:28 - myself.
00:29 - All my life possessions sit on
00:31 - my body.
00:32 - Today I have my bedroll.
00:34 - There's three parts to my
00:35 - bedroll as I get to carry it.
00:37 - Today I have the rubber part or
00:40 - my gum blanket would actually
00:42 - also doubles as a raincoat for
00:44 - me as it has a slit in that.
00:46 - Also the Army issued me a
00:48 - blanket, a wool blanket in order
00:50 - for warmth.
00:51 - If I would need that in a cooler
00:54 - climate and cooler weather
00:55 - activities and my wife and
00:57 - family happened to make me a
00:59 - blanket of my own to carry with
01:00 - me as I bivouacked myself and
01:03 - set myself up throughout our
01:06 - engagement and campaign
01:08 - activities. Other than my
01:09 - blanket.
01:10 - Besides the issue of the leather
01:12 - goods including my Georgia
01:14 - buckle issued from the state of
01:16 - Georgia. My cartridge box and my
01:22 - cap box. My bayonet. I carry
01:25 - everything else that is
01:26 - important to me and my life
01:27 - within my haversack here. That
01:29 - includes my coffee cup.
01:30 - For those rare mornings where I
01:32 - might get a brew of coffee along
01:34 - the way and inside my haversack
01:37 - today things are pretty tight.
01:39 - We are. We don't have much in
01:41 - the way of goods so I've got
01:43 - myself my simple fork and spoon
01:51 - in which I used to eat along
01:53 - with my plate in which I use my
01:56 - plate in order to take my heated
01:58 - food with all of us.
02:01 - I may get a chance to actually
02:02 - fry something. That's my frying
02:04 - pan strapped to my canteen in
02:06 - order to give myself a fresh
02:09 - warm meal. Filling my canteen
02:11 - from a local stream if I can
02:12 - find some local water for me to
02:14 - keep.
02:15 - That's my life possessions.
02:17 - George Klutzz, Forty fourth
02:18 - Georgia.
02:19 - Thanks for talking today.
