The Canneries of York County, History & Culture

[2025] York County's canning industry, which began in 1874, rapidly expanded, creating a crucial market for local farmers. Numerous small canneries once dotted the landscape, especially in southern York County. During World War II, these canneries played a vital role in supplying food to soldiers. Though those small canneries are now gone, the region's food processing legacy lives on through major companies like Hanover Foods and Knouse Foods. We are joined today by Don Linebaugh, professor of historic preservation at the University of Maryland, who will illuminate the history of York County's canneries.
