00:13 - born Elizabeth Griscom in Gloucester City, New Jersey

00:15 - at age three the family relocated to Philadelphia

00:19 - after completing her school thing at a quaker school Betsy became an apprentice to

00:22 - upholsterer William Webster where she learned to sew.

00:25 - After eloping with a fellow apprentice of Webster's

00:30 - John Ross and having a scandalous workplace romance

00:31 - the Rosses opened up their own upholstery shop in 1773

00:35 - In 1776 John was dead

00:39 - and Betsy was still sewing when the one and only general George Washington paid her

00:43 - a visit to discuss a flag for the new nation

00:45 - Washington and the Continental Congress drew up the basic idea for the flag but Betsy

00:50 - improved upon it by arguing that the stars should have five points

00:54 - of six to make it more practical to cut out

00:56 - it is unknown exactly when the flag made its debut on the battlefield of the American

01:01 - revolution as well as if Betsy Ross even was the one who made the flag

01:05 - she as well as other women in Philadelphia were sewing flags at the time

01:09 - her grandson first gave Betsy credit for it in 1870.
