Keystone Classroom Initiative, America 250 2023-01-31

America250PA program on their Keystone Classroom Initiative at Gilbert Spruance Elementary in Philadelphia

Caption Text Below:

00:10 - I'm Jared Solomon.

00:11 - I'm your state representative.

00:15 - Are you all excited

00:17 - about the Eagles?

00:23 - I don't know.

00:25 - I didn't hear everybody.

00:27 - Are you guys really

00:28 - excited about the Eagles

00:29 - in the Super Bowl?

00:36 - That is much better.

00:40 - Can you believe what

00:42 - this is doing for our city?

00:45 - Will you will you

00:46 - all do an Eagles

00:47 - chant with me?

00:53 - Ready?

00:58 - One, one, three.

01:00 - On three.

01:01 - Ready?

01:02 - One, two, three.

01:06 - In a g l e

01:09 - as it goes.

01:20 - What should we do?

01:25 - And should we keep doing that?

01:27 - Or should we get

01:28 - down to business?

01:30 - Get down to business.

01:31 - This guy's got to

01:32 - stop messing around.

01:34 - Let's get down. Get

01:35 - down to business.

01:36 - So I'm your state

01:37 - representative,

01:38 - and I'm also a commissioner

01:42 - of the 250th birthday

01:45 - of the United States.

01:46 - It's a group called

01:48 - America 2:50 p.m..

01:50 - Do you know when

01:52 - the 250th birthday

01:53 - is of the us? No.

01:59 - Come on, somebody.

02:02 - Guess.

02:05 - No, not the Eagles.

02:07 - Although they're

02:08 - going to make 2020.

02:10 - They're going to make

02:11 - 2020 something much better.

02:13 - Yes, I see.

02:14 - Hands.

02:17 - July.

02:18 - But what date? 2020

02:22 - is 2026?

02:27 - Oh, my God.

02:28 - Say it with me.

02:29 - 2020.

02:32 - Yes, exactly.

02:36 - Now we need to prepare.

02:40 - We all have to get ready

02:41 - for this big celebration.

02:44 - And one of the things

02:46 - we're doing to get ready

02:48 - is to bring programing

02:49 - throughout the state.

02:53 - And the programing, the

02:54 - educational programing

02:56 - is starting right here

02:59 - at Spruance. Yes.

03:13 - So I'm going to introduce

03:15 - someone because

03:17 - the point of the programing is

03:19 - to get all of you to be thinking

03:22 - about important values

03:26 - for our country,

03:27 - for your community.

03:30 - How many people here know

03:33 - the quarterback of the Eagles?

03:37 - What's everybody.

03:41 - What's the name?

03:43 - Jalen

03:45 - Hurts.

03:46 - Come on, you could speak up.

03:47 - Hurts, right?

03:49 - Okay. Very good.

03:52 - You guys pass.

03:54 - How many people know

03:56 - the name Henry

03:59 - Box Brown?

04:03 - Oh, no, you don't.

04:05 - Who is it?

04:08 - Someone tell me.

04:11 - Go ahead.

04:13 - Not a football player.

04:15 - Okay, I'll take one more guess.

04:19 - He what?

04:23 - He what? He invented the box?

04:26 - Not really, but we're

04:28 - getting kind of warmer here.

04:30 - I'm going to explain.

04:31 - He's going to

04:32 - come out here. Yes.

04:35 - Yes. Now,

04:38 - just like all of you

04:40 - know, the quarterback

04:41 - of the Eagles,

04:43 - which is so important

04:45 - because he's leading our

04:47 - city with hope and optimism

04:50 - with the Eagles, hopefully

04:52 - to the Super Bowl.

04:54 - By the time we get to 2026,

04:56 - I want you to know the name

04:59 - Henry Box Brown and

05:00 - many other historic figures

05:03 - so you can all figure out what

05:05 - values are important to you

05:07 - and how you in this neighborhood

05:10 - in northeast Philadelphia

05:12 - are going to be future leaders

05:14 - with those values in mind.

05:17 - Are you guys ready

05:18 - for this introduction?

05:25 - Everybody's ready.

05:30 - Where is Henry?

05:31 - Come on out here, Henry.

05:45 - Good afternoon.

05:49 - Good afternoon. Wow.

05:54 - I'm going to ask some questions

05:56 - and you have permission

05:57 - to respond. Okay.

05:59 - All right.

06:01 - So would you believe that

06:04 - it has been 18 years,

06:08 - 18 years since I made

06:10 - that historic escape?

06:13 - Yes, I was a slave.

06:19 - And something happened

06:21 - that caused me to escape.

06:23 - And now that I'm free,

06:26 - I want to share the story

06:28 - of how I escaped with you.

06:32 - All right.

06:32 - So I need you to put your

06:34 - imagination on, all right?

06:36 - And just think about it.

06:38 - So the year is about 1815.

06:42 - That's when I was born.

06:44 - I was born in Louisa

06:45 - County, Virginia, on

06:46 - the Barrett Plantation.

06:48 - And my family, my

06:49 - mother, my father, my sister,

06:50 - my brother, we

06:51 - were house slaves.

06:52 - You know what a house slave is?

06:55 - Very good.

06:56 - Very good.

06:57 - So we were house slaves.

06:58 - And as house slaves,

06:59 - we were treated far

07:01 - different then to feel slaves.

07:03 - We were always well-dressed.

07:06 - Always well-fed.

07:08 - We always wore

07:09 - shoes on our feet.

07:11 - And we could read and write.

07:14 - Now my mother and Fawn

07:16 - Paul, my brother's sister,

07:18 - and had to decide.

07:19 - And she told us

07:21 - the Christian woman

07:22 - that she was that

07:23 - we were not supposed

07:25 - to make that make us think

07:26 - that we were better

07:27 - than to feel slaves.

07:30 - We were all equal.

07:31 - We were all slaves.

07:32 - And we could not treat them

07:34 - any different than we

07:36 - were being treated. So.

07:38 - Oh, I forgot to share with you.

07:40 - Very important.

07:41 - My master.

07:42 - Master Bharat

07:43 - promised my parents

07:44 - that he loved us so much

07:46 - and treated us so differently

07:48 - that when he died he was

07:49 - going to give us our freedom.

07:51 - Now, not to mention that we

07:53 - really wanted the man to die,

07:55 - but we, you know,

07:56 - we wanted to be free.

07:57 - But freedom did

07:58 - sound pretty good to us.

08:00 - Well, I'm about

08:03 - 12 years old

08:04 - and master Bharat became

08:06 - very ill, ill unto death,

08:09 - and all of the slaves started

08:10 - praying for him, hoping

08:12 - that he would get well.

08:13 - Unfortunately, that's not

08:14 - what God had planned.

08:16 - So just before he died, he

08:18 - called my parents into his room

08:21 - and he informed them that

08:22 - he had changed his mind.

08:25 - Instead of giving

08:26 - us our freedom,

08:27 - he was going to separate

08:29 - us among his children.

08:31 - Now, my mother,

08:32 - my sister and I ended up going

08:33 - to Richmond, Virginia, to live

08:35 - with his eldest son, William,

08:37 - who owned a tobacco plantation.

08:40 - And he called me into

08:42 - his office, into his room

08:44 - to tell me, he says, Henry,

08:47 - as long as you are obedient

08:49 - and as long as you do

08:51 - everything that you're told,

08:53 - you will never be whipped.

08:56 - Yes, my family and I

08:58 - will never to this day

08:59 - ever saw a sight of a whip.

09:02 - Well, he made sure

09:03 - that that was to be true

09:05 - because he told his son, he

09:07 - said, William, you make sure

09:09 - that no one puts their

09:10 - hand on weight on on Henry.

09:12 - So, Master Bharat dies.

09:16 - And my mother's sister

09:17 - and I end up in Richmond.

09:19 - Now I'm in the tobacco plant

09:20 - owned own tobacco plantation.

09:21 - I don't know

09:22 - anything about tobacco, but

09:24 - I learned how to make cigars

09:26 - and I learned how to dry

09:27 - the leaves, tobacco leaves,

09:29 - and make whatever

09:30 - need to be made.

09:31 - And I got paid for

09:32 - the work that I did.

09:35 - Well, now I'm about

09:36 - 15 years old, and I think

09:37 - it's time for me to settle

09:39 - down and get married. Yes.

09:41 - 15 years old is a good time

09:42 - for a young man to get married.

09:43 - So one day

09:44 - I am walking down through town

09:46 - and minding my own business.

09:49 - And on

09:49 - the other side of the road, I

09:51 - see this beautiful young lady

09:53 - just standing there on her

09:55 - way into the general store.

09:57 - And I look at her and I smile

10:00 - and I wink and I do my pause.

10:03 - And guess what?

10:04 - I caught her eye

10:05 - and I said, Oh, good.

10:07 - And I started to

10:08 - walk across the road.

10:09 - Well, when I got while

10:10 - I'm walking across the road,

10:11 - there were horses

10:12 - and buggies come and everybody's

10:14 - screaming and yelling at me.

10:15 - I did not care.

10:17 - I was looking

10:18 - for the pretty lady

10:19 - on the other side of the road.

10:21 - And I get on the

10:21 - other side of the road.

10:23 - And you know what she do?

10:25 - She ran inside

10:26 - the general store,

10:28 - and Dancy decided

10:29 - to hide from me.

10:31 - Well, like that was going to

10:32 - keep me from catching up.

10:34 - Well, I ran around the

10:36 - store, and I find her hiding

10:39 - behind this big barrel of flour.

10:43 - Why does she hide

10:44 - behind the flour?

10:45 - It didn't matter.

10:47 - We met.

10:48 - We talked.

10:49 - I helped her with her shopping.

10:51 - And then I walked her home and.

10:53 - Oh, it was such a

10:55 - beautiful moment.

10:57 - I knew immediately that

10:59 - I was going to marry her.

11:00 - Now I know you all are too young

11:03 - to understand what

11:03 - it is to get married.

11:04 - But we're slaves.

11:06 - If we want to get married,

11:08 - we had to get permission

11:09 - from our masters.

11:10 - So I go to her master and

11:12 - I say, Nastily, may I please

11:14 - have your permission

11:16 - to marry that?

11:17 - Oh, I forgot to introduce

11:19 - you to my beautiful new bride.

11:22 - Her name was Nancy.

11:25 - Oh, isn't that a

11:26 - beautiful name? Nancy.

11:27 - Nancy dancing

11:28 - with you. I just love it.

11:30 - So I sit there, I. Sorry.

11:32 - I'm very sorry.

11:33 - I get so excited when

11:34 - I talk about my wife.

11:36 - So I go to Mr. Lee

11:37 - and I say, Mr.

11:38 - Lee, may I please have a mr.

11:40 - to marry the beautiful Nancy?

11:42 - He looks at me

11:43 - and he says, Henry,

11:46 - I gave you permission

11:48 - to marry Nancy, but

11:50 - I'm provision that your

11:52 - master does not sell you for.

11:54 - I am a Christian gentleman,

11:56 - and I do not believe in

11:57 - the separation of family.

11:58 - And I say thank

11:59 - you very much, sir.

12:01 - Then I go to my

12:02 - master and I say, Mr.

12:04 - William, may I please

12:05 - have permission

12:05 - to marry the beautiful Nancy?

12:08 - He looked at me and he say,

12:09 - Yeah, yeah, yeah, go

12:10 - ahead and get married.

12:11 - I said, Very much

12:12 - so. And then we

12:14 - don't approve.

12:15 - Oh, it was such a

12:16 - beautiful celebration.

12:18 - Oh, I wish you all were there.

12:19 - It was just absolutely

12:21 - wonderful life for me.

12:23 - Marriage was so wonderful

12:25 - for the very first year.

12:27 - You see, it

12:29 - only took one year for Master

12:30 - Lee to decide to sell my Nancy.

12:33 - Not only that, but my Nancy

12:35 - was sold three more times.

12:37 - Now comes a gentleman by

12:39 - the name of Master Cottrell.

12:41 - Now, Master Cottrell wants

12:43 - to buy my Nancy for his wife.

12:45 - My Nancy has been sold for $350

12:50 - of which he only had $300.

12:53 - So he come to me

12:55 - and he say, Henry,

12:59 - if you give me the

13:00 - $50 I need in order

13:02 - to purchase your wife, I

13:03 - promise as Christian gentleman

13:06 - that I will not sell the

13:08 - wife or your children.

13:10 - All right, children.

13:11 - I asked you a very

13:12 - important question.

13:13 - Do you think is a good

13:14 - thing for a white man

13:16 - to ask a slave for

13:17 - money to purchase

13:18 - a slave for his wife?

13:19 - Would you take. Yes or no?

13:21 - Now, I didn't think so

13:23 - either, so I thought about it.

13:25 - But then he say to

13:26 - me, I have an idea

13:29 - if you pay me $50 a year and

13:31 - you provide room and board

13:34 - for your wife and the children,

13:35 - and any time I pay, I

13:37 - want to hire your wife out.

13:39 - You pay for the house.

13:40 - I will allow your

13:41 - wife and the children

13:42 - to live in the home

13:44 - that you provide.

13:45 - Now I ask you, good deal.

13:47 - A bad deal?

13:49 - Yes. You're thinking

13:50 - about it just like I did.

13:52 - But guess what? I did it.

13:54 - And for ten years,

13:56 - my wife and children

13:58 - live in the home that I

13:59 - provide for ten years.

14:01 - We lived as though we were free,

14:03 - even though we were slaves.

14:04 - Can you imagine?

14:05 - Every day I come home from work

14:07 - and there is my

14:08 - wife and the children.

14:09 - My daughter runs up to

14:11 - me and gives me a big hug

14:12 - and she says, Oh, Daddy,

14:13 - it's so good to have you home.

14:16 - Oh, I forgot to tell you.

14:18 - I have three children. Yes.

14:19 - Let me introduce you

14:20 - to them. My oldest son.

14:22 - His name is Henry. Very strong,

14:24 - good looking, debonair

14:25 - young man like his papa.

14:28 - And then there's

14:29 - my son, Matthew.

14:30 - That one talks all

14:32 - the time nonstop.

14:34 - That boy talks

14:35 - morning, noon and night.

14:36 - You can get him to shut up.

14:38 - He talks so much.

14:40 - Unbelievable.

14:42 - But then there is

14:43 - my daughter, Rose.

14:44 - What a beautiful

14:45 - little girl she is.

14:47 - I remember the day she was born.

14:50 - I put you in my arm,

14:51 - and I look at her and I say,

14:53 - You have your mother's eyes.

14:55 - You have your mother's smile.

14:57 - Oh, you such a beautiful child.

15:00 - That's why I call her

15:01 - Rose. She's so pretty.

15:02 - But I talk to you

15:03 - later. I love you.

15:04 - All right. Now,

15:07 - one day, early in the morning,

15:09 - next week, while we were

15:11 - eating our breakfast, Nestico

15:13 - comes running into my home,

15:14 - stormed in, and he says to me,

15:16 - Henry, I want you to give

15:18 - me a very large sum of money.

15:21 - I want you to give

15:22 - it to me right now.

15:24 - Well, I look at

15:24 - him and I say, Mr.

15:25 - Good, I do not have such money.

15:28 - See, I already paid

15:29 - you $50 for the year.

15:30 - I paid you last week's hire

15:32 - and I gave you extra money

15:33 - just in case you come round.

15:35 - You asking me for more money?

15:37 - He look at me and he say, Money.

15:39 - I want money I still have.

15:41 - And then he storms out my door.

15:43 - Well, immediately, my

15:45 - wife and the children

15:46 - are colored up over

15:48 - in the corner, crying.

15:50 - And I ran over to them.

15:51 - And we all started

15:52 - to cry and pray.

15:53 - You see, my children, especially

15:56 - my oldest, could be sold.

15:59 - And the amount of money

16:00 - he could get would be a

16:01 - large amount of money.

16:03 - So we were praying that

16:04 - Master Cuccia would

16:05 - not sell the children.

16:07 - So when I leave to go

16:09 - to work, the last sight

16:11 - I've had of my wife

16:12 - and the children is my

16:13 - wife, standing in the doorway

16:15 - and my wife waving

16:16 - at me, saying, Henry,

16:18 - please, please, please,

16:20 - my love, do not go.

16:23 - But children, I had to go

16:24 - because I had to go to work.

16:26 - And no sooner after I had

16:28 - been to work but 3 hours,

16:31 - someone massacre trail had gone

16:32 - into my home, removed my wife,

16:34 - my children, everything.

16:36 - We all took them down

16:37 - to the auction block,

16:38 - and he sold them

16:40 - to another person, a

16:42 - gentleman, a methodist

16:43 - minister from North Carolina.

16:45 - Well, I go to my master and I

16:47 - beg him and I plead with him

16:49 - to lend me the money I need

16:51 - in order to keep my family.

16:54 - And you'll

16:55 - never guess what he said to me.

16:58 - Do you know it? He said.

17:01 - He told me no.

17:05 - Well,

17:07 - I was devastated.

17:09 - I could not believe that this

17:10 - Christian men would not help me

17:12 - with my wife and the children.

17:14 - So I could do nothing.

17:19 - I go home, get whatever

17:20 - provisions I could,

17:22 - and I wait until moving day.

17:24 - Now, this is very

17:25 - important to all of you

17:28 - moving day when slaves

17:29 - are bought and sold in Virginia,

17:32 - our law is that they are

17:34 - placed in jail for holding.

17:36 - And then the next day

17:38 - they are paraded

17:39 - through the town

17:40 - to remind us all

17:41 - a wedding was

17:42 - like to be a slave.

17:43 - So there I am, standing

17:44 - on the side of the road,

17:46 - hoping and praying that I

17:47 - will see my wife and children.

17:49 - And there I'm standing

17:50 - there and there's a parade.

17:52 - They are carriages

17:53 - of the children.

17:54 - And I'm standing there waiting,

17:56 - hoping to see my children.

17:57 - And eventually I hear a

17:59 - boy saying, father, father.

18:03 - And I look at they go,

18:04 - oh, look, look at that.

18:06 - There's my Henry.

18:07 - It's Henry.

18:08 - Henry.

18:08 - It's it's.

18:12 - There's nothing I could do.

18:14 - So I stand there

18:15 - and I'm praying,

18:16 - and I'm hoping that I will least

18:17 - see Matthew or whoever is mad.

18:19 - I would love to hear his voice.

18:21 - And where is my rose?

18:22 - Who is holding on to my rose?

18:24 - Well, the children pass by.

18:27 - And then there are the men

18:30 - shackled hand and foot,

18:32 - and their heads are hung

18:34 - down low and they are humming

18:36 - the most horrible

18:37 - tune you will ever hear.

18:40 - And their wives

18:40 - and their children.

18:42 - And they're hugged.

18:43 - And all of their families

18:44 - running up to them

18:45 - screaming and crying because

18:46 - they are never see them again.

18:49 - And I just stood there hoping

18:50 - and waiting to see my wife.

18:52 - And after the men

18:54 - pass, the women come

18:57 - in at a distance.

19:00 - I could see

19:02 - my net and I see nothing, Nancy.

19:07 - And I run to her and I grab her.

19:10 - And I hug her

19:13 - and I hold her hand.

19:15 - And for the next four miles,

19:18 - we walk hand in hand,

19:20 - not saying a word.

19:23 - And then I was told that I could

19:25 - no longer walk with my wife.

19:28 - And immediately

19:29 - she grabbed my hand

19:31 - and she ripped a piece of

19:34 - her apron and gave it to me.

19:39 - And I waved at her.

19:40 - And I say, We will meet again

19:46 - in heaven.

19:49 - Well, ladies and

19:51 - gentlemen, boys and girls,

19:54 - there is no reason for me

19:56 - to remain a slave any longer.

19:59 - So immediately I

20:00 - devise a way to escape.

20:03 - Takes me three months.

20:04 - But I continue to pray.

20:06 - And you'll never guess.

20:08 - I come up with a wonderful idea.

20:12 - I decide to mail myself. Yes.

20:16 - I want to mail myself in a box.

20:19 - Well, my friend Johnson's

20:20 - a letter to Philadelphia.

20:22 - And the people in

20:23 - Philadelphia say, yes,

20:24 - they receive my

20:25 - box, and immediately

20:26 - I decide to run away.

20:28 - Now, in order for me to get

20:29 - away without getting caught,

20:31 - I had to come up with

20:32 - another plan. Hmm.

20:34 - How am I going to escape

20:36 - without getting caught? Aha.

20:39 - I have idea.

20:41 - Good friend tells

20:42 - me to put some petrol

20:44 - on my hand and it adds in

20:46 - like a little acid and pours and

20:48 - burns the hole into my head.

20:50 - Well, I was so excited that

20:51 - I poured a little too much,

20:53 - and actually it burned

20:54 - a big hole in my head.

20:55 - Well, I go to the

20:56 - master, obviously,

20:57 - and I say, Look, I burned

20:58 - my head. I cannot work.

20:59 - He says, Don't worry about it.

21:00 - I'll see you in the next day.

21:02 - And then I get in my box and

21:05 - I am shipped from Richmond,

21:08 - Virginia, to Philadelphia,

21:11 - 27 hours I spent in a box.

21:15 - Let me tell you something.

21:16 - When I got to Washington,

21:18 - D.C., you know, I spent an hour

21:20 - and a half upside

21:20 - down on top of my head.

21:22 - How many of you can

21:23 - stand on top of your head?

21:24 - But I wouldn't have.

21:26 - You not know.

21:27 - You not understand what I

21:28 - say? I didn't say for 5 minutes.

21:30 - I didn't say for 2 minutes.

21:31 - I said for an hour and a half.

21:33 - Put your hands down.

21:35 - You don't?

21:35 - No idea what I'm talking about.

21:38 - But I did.

21:39 - And while I was standing,

21:40 - there was praying, asking for

21:42 - someone to sit in my box down.

21:44 - Do you know what my boss says?

21:46 - Fragile. Do not drop this in up.

21:49 - And of course, the Postal

21:50 - Service never understand.

21:51 - They never follow

21:53 - any instructed.

21:54 - But there were two

21:55 - men on the boxcar.

21:57 - And they saw my box.

21:58 - They were tired of standing up.

21:59 - They took the box, threw it

22:01 - down and sat on top of me.

22:03 - And I was so elated,

22:05 - so gratified, so happy

22:07 - that I could breathe

22:08 - and that the blood went back

22:11 - to where it's supposed to go.

22:14 - But while I was in

22:15 - that box, I was terrified

22:18 - because I did not

22:18 - know what was going on

22:20 - with my wife in the children.

22:22 - But when I arrived

22:23 - in Philadelphia,

22:25 - William Steele opened my.

22:26 - He wrapped on my box.

22:28 - And he say all is well.

22:30 - And I respond, all is well.

22:33 - I pop out of the box

22:35 - and I say, How do you

22:37 - do, ladies and gentlemen?

22:43 - How do you do?

22:45 - How is freedom?

22:47 - Isn't freedom wonderful?

22:49 - You get to go anywhere you

22:50 - want, do whatever you want.

22:52 - But remember, the slaves

22:54 - did not have that opportunity.

22:56 - And for us to be free

22:59 - was a wonderful gift from God.

23:03 - Thank you.

23:05 - Have a good day.

23:13 - All right.

23:14 - So I've been told that some

23:16 - of you have read my book.

23:18 - Is that correct?

23:20 - Some of you have?

23:21 - Yes. Very good.

23:22 - So do you have any

23:24 - questions you like to ask me?

23:27 - Yes, sir.

23:28 - My name?

23:31 - Do I look like I'm dead?

23:35 - I am Henry Boggs.

23:37 - Yes, ma'am.

23:41 - Am I ever going to

23:42 - see my family again?

23:43 - No, I am not.

23:44 - Unfortunately, the gentleman

23:46 - who purchased my family was

23:48 - and was meaner than

23:49 - Master Cottrell was.

23:52 - He made sure that I would never,

23:54 - ever see my wife and children

23:56 - ever again.

23:57 - Yes. Did you have a question?

23:59 - No. Yes.

24:02 - I can't hear you.

24:08 - What year did I escape?

24:10 - 1850.

24:12 - March of 1850. Yes.

24:14 - Yes, sir.

24:15 - Striped shirt

24:25 - at my workshop.

24:27 - Well,

24:29 - when I was working

24:32 - on the plantation in

24:33 - Richmond, Virginia, I worked.

24:35 - I made cigars.

24:38 - When I became a free man.

24:40 - I sang and I became a magician.

24:45 - That's how I made my

24:46 - money afterwards. Yes.

24:49 - Yes, ma'am.

24:58 - Where do I live now?

25:00 - Yes, right now I am in Canada.

25:02 - I'm visiting you from Canada.

25:04 - Once I left Philadelphia,

25:06 - I went to Boston.

25:08 - And from Boston I had to escape.

25:10 - I had to run away again.

25:11 - This time I ended up

25:12 - in Manchester, England.

25:14 - And while I was in

25:15 - Manchester, England,

25:16 - I wrote my book and I came

25:17 - back to the United States

25:19 - after the Civil War.

25:20 - After the Civil War,

25:21 - I did not like how things

25:23 - were here in America.

25:25 - So I took my new family

25:26 - and we settled in Canada.

25:28 - So that's where I live now?

25:30 - Yes, sir.

25:31 - Yes. I have no

25:33 - idea what that is.

25:37 - I like birds.

25:40 - Yes. Yes.

25:47 - What year did I lose my family?

25:50 - 1849.

25:52 - Yes, ma'am.

25:57 - Say again.

26:04 - The question is it was

26:05 - I when I was a slave?

26:06 - Did I like it?

26:07 - No, I did not like

26:09 - being a slave.

26:11 - Would you like someone to tell

26:12 - you what to do all the time?

26:14 - You have no freedom to

26:15 - do, think and do whatever.

26:16 - Now, didn't like it.

26:18 - All right, gentlemen.

26:19 - Right there in the red shirt.

26:20 - Yes, you.

26:22 - Yes. Say again.

26:28 - What do you mean?

26:28 - Where was I stuck?

26:32 - I have to say

26:39 - one more time.

26:46 - I had to have it.

26:50 - Oh, my.

26:53 - I did.

26:54 - I was in Philadelphia

26:57 - and the Abolition Society, which

26:59 - is located on Fifth and Arch.

27:01 - This is the Underground

27:03 - Railroad Office.

27:04 - That's where I met the

27:05 - gentleman sitting right there

27:07 - in the red shirt, young lady.

27:11 - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

27:14 - You, sir?

27:15 - Yeah, you.

27:16 - You had a question.

27:17 - How would you have.

27:21 - Yeah, yeah.

27:26 - What year was

27:31 - that in my life?

27:33 - Oh, that would've been in eight.

27:37 - Oh oh.

27:38 - Now you're really making

27:39 - me think that would be

27:41 - the miserable 84. 18.

27:50 - Wow. 1832.

27:53 - Yes. 1832.

27:55 - Yes, ma'am.

28:00 - That's

28:03 - when I came out.

28:04 - The box said I have a

28:10 - in Philadelphia.

28:20 - Oh, the year I came

28:22 - out the box, it was 1849.

28:25 - 1849.

28:26 - Yes, sir. Yes.

28:33 - You'll think about it.

28:34 - Come back to. I'll

28:34 - come back to you.

28:35 - Yes, ma'am.

28:41 - When I was in the bath, was I?

28:45 - Oh, Lord, yes.

28:46 - Can you imagine?

28:48 - Let me tell you.

28:49 - All right.

28:50 - This is the this is the

28:51 - position I had in the bath

28:54 - for 27 hours.

28:56 - I was like this.

28:58 - Can you imagine

28:59 - being stuck in a position

29:01 - like that for 27 hours in a box?

29:03 - That was Daddy.

29:07 - That that just had

29:08 - three holes in it.

29:10 - That's all I had.

29:12 - It was not a I wouldn't

29:13 - recommend doing it.

29:15 - Yes, ma'am.

29:16 - You were in the front row? Yes.

29:20 - How did I do it?

29:23 - Well, to be honest

29:25 - with you, I was

29:26 - I prayed very hard,

29:28 - prayed very hard.

29:29 - And I wanted to make

29:31 - sure I asked

29:32 - God to make sure

29:33 - that I would survive.

29:35 - And it was by his

29:36 - grace and mercy

29:37 - that I was able to do that.

29:38 - Yes, ma'am.

29:41 - Can I breathe? Of

29:42 - course I can breathe.

29:45 - And Abbas?

29:45 - Yes. There were three holes

29:47 - that I had put in the pipe

29:48 - so that I would not die.

29:50 - And I had a pouch of

29:51 - water to keep me hydrated

29:54 - so I would not pass out.

29:56 - Yes, sir.

30:02 - I'm really surprised.

30:03 - Everybody nobody knows the

30:04 - two most interesting questions.

30:06 - I think every film that I

30:08 - did this is very good. Yes.

30:13 - Can I have that

30:13 - voice that you use

30:14 - when you're outside yelling and.

30:19 - No, no.

30:21 - And the reason why I.

30:23 - Why would I not bring any food?

30:24 - Anybody want to

30:25 - take a wild guess?

30:26 - Why wouldn't I bring any food?

30:27 - Yes, sir.

30:28 - You were in the blue.

30:31 - It would be what? No.

30:34 - What would be the other

30:36 - reason? Why would I eat?

30:37 - Yes, ma'am. It would let

30:42 - what it was spill.

30:44 - No, not

30:50 - you would like what?

30:53 - I would not want it. I have.

30:54 - No, no one was in the about.

30:56 - Why would I not take

30:59 - food in the box. Yes.

31:02 - Well, there

31:03 - that's a possibility, but

31:04 - that's not the main reason.

31:05 - What happens when you eat food?

31:09 - You what?

31:11 - What?

31:14 - I in the bathroom.

31:17 - Oh, yes, yes.

31:20 - That's why they know

31:22 - that I had to go

31:23 - to the bathroom.

31:24 - And what happened was I didn't

31:26 - go through with I can do it

31:27 - in 12 hours before I

31:32 - decided to say yes.

31:37 - I didn't drink a lot.

31:38 - I had just a small amount

31:40 - of water with all the time.

31:42 - I was still and I

31:45 - felt like I was about to

31:47 - break out of the water. And

31:50 - yesterday I

31:55 - you know,

31:57 - I didn't I didn't I didn't

31:58 - do a break for that.

32:00 - Yes, I did.

32:03 - I get out of the bath when

32:05 - I wasn't able to get up.

32:06 - When you feel like all of this

32:08 - colleagues at the Underground

32:09 - Railroad, only about a minute.

32:12 - Yes. Yeah.

32:19 - They go back in.

32:25 - Wait, wait, wait,

32:25 - wait, wait, wait.

32:26 - All right, I'm going to do that.

32:30 - All right, so get

32:40 - how am

32:43 - I going to come from Britain

32:46 - all the way to Philadelphia?

32:48 - Because I don't any money now.

32:53 - All right, I go

33:00 - right.

33:02 - You're one of the people

33:05 - in your

33:07 - mouth.

33:14 - Why? You know, I had a lot.

33:16 - I had a lot back.

33:21 - Just a very

33:22 - small that little bit.

33:24 - I didn't want to have

33:27 - it, but I felt

33:31 - maybe more

33:33 - because of my grandmother.

33:34 - Well,

33:36 - it was the last a black

33:38 - box, the Master P

33:41 - Well, I my name is

33:42 - actually Henry Brown.

33:44 - Right.

33:45 - And once I get in the box,

33:47 - I was given the name box

33:50 - and now I'm

33:53 - yeah, the

33:56 - last name

34:01 - that you was like,

34:03 - you know.

34:06 - Yes, yes.

34:10 - 18. Really?

34:12 - Yes. Yes.

34:19 - Then I went to the

34:20 - Bible and I didn't.

34:22 - Yes, I

34:29 - but I read it

34:30 - and I know exactly what I.

34:37 - Yes, the question for myself

34:40 - and I definitely get it

34:45 - how old I was 31 years old.

34:49 - Age 50?

34:50 - Yeah. 31. Yes.

34:53 - How old by now.

34:54 - I don't want to say

34:59 - that I was you

35:17 - all right?

35:19 - I. All right, so everyone out,

35:27 - you get cancer.

35:29 - And actually,

35:31 - when I came out of the

35:34 - hospital.

35:35 - Well, I ended up

35:38 - staying in Philadelphia,

35:42 - and I'm waiting for the

35:44 - reason why I wanted

35:46 - to come back

35:49 - for a year.

35:52 - That I was nine months.

35:55 - And then after that and all of

36:00 - not being in the United States

36:05 - gave way to my

36:10 - kidney.

36:11 - That was all they had to go for.

36:16 - And they wanted me all one week.

36:20 - And since then, I think so.

36:23 - And I was able to see in

36:25 - the United States, that's why I

36:30 - can't go

36:32 - back there.

36:34 - I only have one more minute,

36:38 - 111111189.

36:44 - And look who's.

36:46 - Yeah, okay.

36:49 - That was good right there.

36:53 - And what are you

36:54 - able to do that again?

36:56 - Just to make it

37:03 - oh, oh, oh,

37:06 - can't go.

37:10 - Yeah, yeah,

37:13 - yeah.

37:17 - Go get

37:20 - them.

37:21 - They told.
