00:22 - And we're out and about checking

00:23 - on the covered Bridges in the

00:25 - southern.

00:26 - Part of the.

00:27 - County

00:28 - this morning.

00:30 - So we're right here at the

00:32 - hauling said covered bridge.

00:34 - Right in.

00:35 - The town of

00:35 - catalysts so basically.

00:38 - And this bridge was built by

00:39 - Peter and in

00:40 - about eighteen fifty.

00:42 - So on the opposite side of

00:44 - this bridge there's a window on

00:45 - either side of the bridge

00:47 - and the windows aren't in

00:48 - all of the Bridges his but this

00:50 - particular bridge has.

00:52 - The windows because of the

00:53 - way the road is configured and.

00:56 - It allows

00:57 - when you're going through the

00:58 - bridge from this

00:59 - entrance through

01:01 - it allows you to see the traffic

01:02 - coming in either direction on

01:04 - the other side of the bridge.

01:06 - So this bridge is also of

01:08 - the Theodore arbor arch

01:10 - construction

01:11 - Theodore burr was a prominent

01:13 - bridge belter in Pennsylvania.

01:15 - And he patent at the Theodore

01:17 - or arch truss design.

01:20 - You'll see that on this bridge

01:22 - and it's the most prominent

01:24 - construction in Pennsylvania but

01:26 - not all of the Bridges

01:27 - we will be seeing some.

01:29 - That are not this design

01:30 - and we will point that out

01:32 - as we go along.

01:42 - Er we are at the snyder covered

01:43 - bridge it's a nice little

01:45 - covered bridge in Columbia

01:46 - county that crosses the little

01:48 - roaring creek.

01:49 - Stream

01:50 - and.

01:51 - As you can see it's.

01:53 - Been well maintained

01:55 - pain that has

01:57 - a pretty fresh paint job on it.

01:57 - And this bridge is a queen post

01:59 - truss we talked about the trust

02:02 - designs earlier.

02:03 - This is a queen

02:04 - post compared to the.

02:07 - More prominent

02:08 - Theodore burr arch

02:09 - trust design in our county.

02:12 - This bridge you might also knit.

02:14 - Remember we talked about the.

02:17 - Numbering system

02:18 - for covered Bridges

02:20 - and this covered

02:21 - bridge as you can see.

02:23 - Is number seventeen

02:24 - in our county.

02:26 - So that

02:27 - there there's a numbering

02:28 - system where thirty eight would

02:30 - represent Pennsylvania.

02:32 - And the second number nineteen

02:35 - would represent

02:36 - in Columbia county

02:36 - and so this bridge

02:37 - of seventeen is.

02:39 - The number for the bridge itself

02:43 - so each time a

02:43 - bridge has sat it.

02:44 - In the county it gets a number

02:46 - thus

02:47 - the numbering system so that

02:49 - if there's an issue it's

02:50 - easier to locate the Bridges.

02:53 - So there's not a whole

02:54 - lot now one about the

02:56 - snyder cover bridge

02:57 - who belted originally.

03:00 - But we do know that it

03:01 - is named for John snyder.

03:03 - Who owned

03:04 - and operated a

03:05 - grist mill nearby.

03:33 - We're here at the Davis covered

03:35 - bridge in Columbia county.

03:38 - And.

03:39 - This fridge was originally

03:41 - built by Daniel cost and bauder.

03:44 - At a cost of a little over a

03:46 - thousand dollars

03:47 - which would seem.

03:49 - Really

03:50 - reasonable these

03:51 - days considering cos.

03:54 - This Bridges the

03:55 - Theodore bar arch.

03:56 - Trust design as you can see.

03:59 - By the arch as i'm.

04:01 - Walking through here.

04:03 - Another thing I want to

04:04 - mention is the Theodore arbor.

04:06 - Covered bridge society.

04:08 - Which is located

04:09 - here in Pennsylvania.

04:11 - Is quite active.

04:13 - And actually.

04:14 - Members of the Theodore berger.

04:17 - Covered bridge society

04:18 - repainted this bridge

04:19 - a few years ago.

04:21 - So the bridge is.

04:24 - Looks.

04:25 - Pretty freshly.

04:26 - Painted compared to some others.

04:29 - And while we're talking about.

04:31 - Paint.

04:33 - Often times people wonder why

04:35 - covered Bridges

04:36 - are all painted red.

04:38 - Well

04:38 - not all covered

04:40 - Bridges are painted

04:42 - red it just so happens that.

04:42 - All the Bridges in Columbia

04:44 - county are painted red.

04:47 - And.

04:48 - They have painted red

04:49 - because.

04:51 - Of the cost of the paint

04:53 - one of

04:53 - riches were originally.

04:55 - Painted

04:56 - and painted

04:57 - red it was because they used.

05:00 - Iron oxide.

05:01 - Red.

05:02 - Iron oxide paint

05:04 - to paint the Bridges.

05:06 - When built

05:07 - the Davis covered

05:08 - bridge was named

05:09 - the Davis covered bridge.

05:11 - After a farmer who live

05:13 - nearby

05:13 - by the name of Davis.

05:15 - And it's been told that

05:17 - the Davis family.

05:19 - Still.

05:20 - Operates a nearby

05:22 - farm which is right across

05:24 - the bridge here.

05:30 - We're here at the ester

05:31 - furnace covered bridge.

05:33 - And the easter furnace

05:34 - covered bridge was

05:36 - originally named for.

05:38 - The ester furnace which was an

05:40 - iron melting furnace which was.

05:42 - Located at nearby.

05:44 - The bridge was built.

05:46 - By c w eaves and it crosses the

05:50 - north branch of

05:51 - the roaring creek.

05:51 - And the.

05:52 - Bridge was

05:53 - built in all of the

05:55 - Bridges actually

05:57 - in Columbia county were built.

05:58 - In the mid to late or

06:00 - eighteen hundreds

06:02 - so they asked their

06:02 - furnace bridge as.

06:03 - A.

06:04 - Double span bridge.

06:06 - Which means it has an extra

06:07 - support underneath in the middle

06:09 - helping to support the

06:11 - weight of the bridge.

06:13 - The other unique thing

06:14 - about this bridge is that it's.

06:16 - Because it's a.

06:17 - Double span

06:18 - bridge it also has two

06:21 - queen posts trust

06:22 - inside.

06:23 - To help support and get

06:25 - the bridge suspension.

06:51 - We're here at the Lawrence al

06:53 - canal boat covered bridge which.

06:56 - Oddly enough is

06:57 - located and carnivals

06:59 - amusement resort.

07:01 - Near.

07:02 - A leesburg.

07:03 - The bridge was originally this

07:05 - bridge was originally located.

07:08 - In west creek near

07:10 - Benton pa.

07:12 - And moved here when.

07:14 - H h canal boat

07:15 - purchase as the bridge.

07:17 - At a cost of

07:18 - forty dollars.

07:20 - Considering that was a bargain

07:22 - considering the original cost of

07:24 - the bridge was three

07:24 - hundred and forty eight dollars

07:26 - the bridge was in

07:27 - storage for quite a while.

07:29 - Until they reconstructed

07:31 - the bridge here in canal boats

07:33 - amusement resort park

07:34 - the bridge

07:36 - as you can say is the

07:37 - only non painted bridge.

07:40 - In Columbia county

07:42 - but the bridge

07:43 - actually belongs to.

07:45 - The canal bulls family.

07:48 - It's the only bridge.

07:49 - With a lock way.

07:51 - And this bridge connects.

07:53 - The amusement park.

07:55 - With the canal both camp ground.

07:57 - This Lawrence l canal

07:58 - boat cover bridge.

08:00 - Is a small bridge so it's a

08:02 - queen palace

08:03 - trust design inside.

08:05 - Which queen post truss were

08:06 - more or less used for smaller

08:09 - shorter Bridges

08:10 - the bridge is

08:12 - quite

08:12 - popular here in the

08:13 - in the

08:14 - canal both girls and because.

08:16 - People like.

08:18 - Having the habit of.

08:20 - Writing graffiti.

08:22 - Carving graffiti inside

08:23 - of covered Bridges.

08:25 - Can almost put up these.

08:27 - Boards here

08:28 - where people can sign

08:29 - names or leave messages.

08:32 - Whatever they desire to

08:33 - do as they're visiting the bar.

08:47 - Richards covered bridge

08:49 - and it's located

08:51 - partly in Columbia

08:52 - county and partly in

08:54 - northumberland county

08:56 - so Cleveland township in

08:57 - Columbia county owns part of it

09:00 - and Ralph old township in

09:04 - northumberland

09:04 - county owns part of it.

09:05 - And it was originally built.

09:08 - As a joint effort between the

09:09 - two counties Columbia and

09:11 - northumberland county.

09:13 - Branch is

09:13 - interesting in that it's.

09:16 - Built on a sleigh land.

09:18 - The

09:19 - branches slant at

09:20 - the florist slanted.

09:22 - Just about everything

09:24 - about it is slanted.

09:26 - The trust design on this.

09:28 - Covered bridge is unique in that

09:32 - it's a combination

09:32 - of a queen post

09:33 - and king post.

09:34 - Which makes it kind of

09:36 - unique in this county a.

09:49 - Hair at the

09:50 - bloomsburg fairgrounds.

09:52 - At the.

09:53 - Information both for the

09:54 - Columbia montour

09:55 - visitors bureau.

09:57 - As we prepare to take.

09:59 - On our covered bridge tour.

10:01 - That is.

10:02 - Associated with the

10:03 - covered bridge festival.

10:05 - So we have a.

10:06 - Boss.

10:07 - And we'll take the

10:08 - spokes on a tour.

10:11 - Approximately eight

10:12 - or nine Bridges today.

10:14 - And on the tour we try to point

10:16 - out differences in the Bridges.

10:18 - And.

10:20 - Talk about the

10:21 - history of the Bridges

10:23 - what makes each bridge unique.

10:24 - And we encourage people to

10:26 - look for those differences.

10:28 - While they're out searching for

10:31 - the covered

10:31 - Bridges on their own.

10:49 - Ok ladies and gentlemen

10:51 - welcome to our tour.

10:53 - This is our first bridge

10:54 - this is my favorite breads.

10:57 - I think I like them all but.

10:59 - This is one of my favorites so

11:01 - this is the roper

11:02 - covered bridge.

11:03 - Named for

11:04 - the village of Robert

11:05 - which was named

11:06 - after Henry Rupert.

11:08 - Who

11:09 - settled here.

11:10 - In the eighteen hundreds

11:12 - and he had a fit

11:13 - developed a ferry

11:14 - that would cross the.

11:16 - The river for people to get back

11:17 - and forth and so here is the

11:19 - Rupert bridge and

11:20 - in originally this bridge

11:22 - was a single span

11:23 - covered bridge.

11:25 - And about nineteen ninety

11:26 - nine I think it might be in your

11:28 - brochure they

11:29 - renovated this fridge

11:31 - and when they renovated it

11:32 - they put the two piers

11:34 - underneath the bridge

11:36 - so that made the bridge is now

11:37 - a three span covered bridge and

11:39 - set up a single span but

11:41 - originally it was one spam.

11:43 - But so Theodore bar arch truss

11:45 - you would see that if you get

11:47 - out and look at it.

11:48 - The dark colored siding boards

11:50 - there that you see were replaced

11:52 - during that

11:53 - two thousand and six flood.

11:55 - Or after the flood I guess

11:57 - I should say when a.

11:59 - Tree came down

11:59 - and hit the side of the

12:01 - bridge.

12:36 - This is what happens to a

12:37 - bridge that is retired well say.

12:40 - It was and.

12:42 - Well it still is an authentic

12:44 - covered bridge but it was.

12:46 - Originally located

12:47 - in the catalyst

12:49 - area.

12:50 - The developer of this

12:51 - housing area moved here

12:53 - recently they're trying to.

12:56 - Find a

12:57 - better permanent home for this

12:59 - bridge so the county bought it

13:01 - they were going to put it at

13:02 - the fair gray rounds that wasn't

13:03 - going to work because it was

13:04 - too big then they were going to

13:05 - move it I think the berwick.

13:08 - That wasn't gonna work

13:09 - right now I think it's still up

13:11 - up in the air about what's

13:12 - going to happen with that

13:13 - and oftentimes the Bridges

13:15 - that are relocated are

13:17 - relocated like this in an area

13:19 - that's just used as a footbridge

13:21 - this one I don't even know well

13:23 - if it's safe to use as a foot

13:24 - bridge.

13:46 - Okay so as you can probably say

13:48 - these are our world famous twin

13:50 - Bridges west pattern and a

13:52 - spat and are paid and whichever.

13:55 - I've heard it said

13:56 - pronounced both ways.

13:59 - There are another set of.

14:02 - So called twin Bridges in

14:03 - the in the United States and.

14:06 - Vermont

14:07 - that.

14:08 - They kind of.

14:09 - Some kind

14:10 - sometimes classify as twins

14:13 - but we like to think ours are

14:14 - the only twin Bridges in the

14:16 - United States

14:17 - the twins have quite a history

14:19 - there was there was a damaged

14:21 - from a tree fell

14:22 - on the east paid

14:23 - in bridge

14:24 - then somebody

14:25 - tried to arsenal but

14:26 - after it was repaired

14:28 - after the arson attempt.

14:30 - Cabin from upstream there in two

14:32 - thousand and six came down and

14:34 - took this one completely away.

14:36 - The west paid and.

14:38 - So out of the goodness of

14:39 - everybody's heart

14:40 - it was replaced.

14:42 - And

14:43 - we can now say we still have

14:44 - the only twin Bridges in the

14:46 - United States if we want to

14:48 - and some of that history of the

14:50 - Bridges is you have see down

14:51 - there is a placard on the

14:52 - other side of the Bridges.

14:54 - That will give you some

14:55 - of that information about

14:57 - the damage.

15:18 - And

15:36 - so ladies and gentlemen this is

15:38 - the still water covered bridge.

15:40 - And just

15:41 - when you get it will let you

15:43 - out and when you do just

15:45 - be mindful that this is

15:46 - private property over here.

15:49 - The stillwater covered bridge

15:51 - was recently renovated by the

15:53 - Columbia county covered

15:55 - Bridges association.

15:57 - And the bridge that

15:58 - is just saya has bridge

16:00 - and this one are both owned

16:01 - by the Columbia county covered

16:03 - Bridges association.

16:05 - So get out and enjoy the bridge

16:08 - it's one of our longer ones

16:10 - and please be sure to look

16:12 - at the flooring in this bridge.

16:36 - This is the Patterson

16:38 - bridge so this is the last one.

16:42 - On the tour.

16:44 - And this if you notice is a oh

16:46 - this is the only bridge in the

16:48 - county with the overhangs.

16:50 - Over the windows.

16:51 - So have so

16:52 - little unique in that sense.

16:55 - It also has the the oldest

16:57 - graffiti inside so if your.

16:59 - Have good eyes

17:00 - you can be looking

17:01 - around when you go inside the

17:02 - bridge.

17:32 - in bloomsburg Pennsylvania

17:33 - on the fairgrounds

17:34 - and this is the first

17:35 - year we've had it here.

17:37 - We had to move from cannibals

17:39 - and find a new home and this is

17:41 - where we've set up

17:42 - and we had

17:43 - a banner crowd of people in

17:44 - here yesterday today's looking.

17:47 - Almost as good as it did before.

17:49 - We've been over forty

17:51 - years and running a festival

17:53 - and.

17:54 - We were

17:55 - worried about moving it to here

17:57 - and it looks like all of our

17:58 - worries were for not

17:59 - everything seems

18:00 - to be working wow.

18:02 - Since we started the covered

18:03 - bridge festival it's always

18:04 - followed bloomsburg

18:05 - there the next town can.

18:07 - Do.

18:08 - When we write cannibals.

18:09 - That was not a

18:11 - problem for US now

18:12 - with US being on

18:13 - the fairgrounds.

18:14 - It's created a lot of challenges

18:15 - with being able to setup at an

18:17 - event this large

18:18 - three days after

18:19 - bloomsburg fair.

18:21 - So right now we're

18:21 - content hewing

18:22 - to hope to go for the weekend

18:24 - after fair

18:25 - but

18:25 - so we speak with

18:26 - all parties and.

18:28 - Can come to a conclusion we

18:30 - may have to adapt when our day

18:31 - actually falls

18:32 - but we will definitely be in

18:34 - the very beginning of October.

18:36 - We have a ton of food vendors

18:37 - here there are about thirty five

18:39 - food vendors on the grounds

18:40 - they are the exact same food

18:41 - vendors that we

18:42 - had a covered bridge

18:43 - when we were at carnivals

18:45 - and we have about three

18:46 - hundred and fifty craft vendors

18:48 - and

18:49 - it's really.

18:50 - Grown from the very beginning

18:52 - my dad and dick and

18:53 - buddy canova started this.

18:56 - Back in the day to try and raise

18:58 - money for the covered bridge

18:59 - association and

19:00 - the visitors bureau.

19:02 - And we been able to do that and

19:04 - today it does help support all

19:05 - of our.

19:07 - Advertising needs that we have

19:08 - in the office as well as other

19:10 - expenses.

19:11 - That the very first year there

19:13 - were two food vendors and a.

19:15 - Bunch of.

19:17 - Craft vendors that were there

19:19 - and

19:20 - I can tell you from that day.

19:22 - Eighty seven dollars was the

19:24 - take or the first

19:24 - weekend that we

19:25 - were at covered bridge

19:26 - and now we host.

19:28 - Probably well over

19:29 - seventy five thousand people

19:31 - in the course of the weekend

19:33 - and while we're at covered

19:34 - bridge we have a lot of

19:35 - demonstrators

19:36 - there's a whole area dedicated

19:38 - to you being able to watch

19:39 - products that we have here

19:41 - on the festival being

19:42 - made from scratch.
