00:10 - Welcome
00:11 - to the roseburg fair
00:12 - here we are in one hundred and
00:14 - sixty seventh year the boonsboro
00:15 - fair.
00:16 - And agricultural fair
00:17 - this this fair started.
00:18 - Hundred and sixty seven years
00:20 - ago with some farmers getting
00:21 - together and
00:22 - having horse races and
00:23 - showing off farm machinery
00:24 - and having farm
00:25 - machinery competitions
00:26 - and I
00:27 - in one hundred and sixty seven
00:28 - years rs it's it's bloomed into
00:30 - a two hundred acre.
00:31 - A.
00:32 - Fair one of the largest
00:33 - fairs in Pennsylvania.
00:36 - We still tried to follow
00:37 - our agricultural roots
00:39 - we would love to stay
00:39 - agriculture the whole time.
00:42 - But as
00:42 - as things progress we
00:43 - have the games and.
00:45 - We have a
00:46 - thousand vendors here on
00:47 - this fairgrounds nowadays
00:49 - and.
00:50 - They are.
00:52 - Ranges and
00:53 - food mostly
00:54 - this is
00:54 - kind of known as
00:55 - an eating fair now
00:57 - we have a lot of food but
00:58 - that's part of agriculture
00:59 - without agriculture
01:00 - you don't have food.
01:01 - We have a lot of live animals.
01:03 - To see a lot of
01:04 - people come from.
01:06 - Larger towns and larger cities
01:08 - they don't have they don't get
01:09 - to see the animals like you
01:10 - would hear at the
01:10 - bloomsburg fair
01:11 - so we like to demonstrate them.
01:13 - And also.
01:15 - Way of agricultural machinery
01:16 - old antique machinery and
01:18 - modern machinery around on the
01:19 - grounds to be able to see.
01:21 - The aromas that you smell
01:23 - as you walk around
01:24 - the fairgrounds
01:24 - just aromas everywhere you
01:25 - just
01:26 - makes it
01:26 - makes your mouth water all day
01:27 - long matter how full you get.
01:29 - But along with that our.
01:31 - Buildings we have
01:32 - all all kinds of exhibits
01:33 - from local and far
01:34 - away people that.
01:36 - Make thing show things.
01:38 - The
01:38 - buildings are
01:39 - beautiful we rarely
01:40 - recommend people come and see
01:41 - the buildings.
01:42 - The local talent is amazing
01:43 - around here and
01:44 - this is where they
01:44 - get the display it.
01:46 - Chocolate pie
01:47 - apple.
01:48 - Apple pie making
01:49 - contest chocolate cakey
01:51 - making contests.
01:52 - If you can come
01:53 - here it's pa preferred
01:55 - and then you move on to the farm
01:56 - show in Harrisburg in January
01:58 - and try and when your
01:59 - when your best pie there.
02:02 - Just come to the fair there's so
02:03 - many things there's something
02:04 - here for everybody it's a
02:05 - it's a beautiful place and a
02:06 - wonderful place to have.
02:08 - A bloomsburg fair.
02:42 - Hi I'm Suzanne
02:43 - and an employee here at the
02:45 - horticultural
02:45 - building and today we
02:47 - are right now in this
02:48 - specimen flower section.
02:50 - These are flour hours that the
02:51 - public has entered they
02:53 - brought them in on Friday
02:54 - they got judged on Saturday.
02:56 - While the fair was open
02:58 - and you can see some of the
02:59 - different kinds that came in.
03:01 - When the judges are looking at
03:02 - them they're looking for quality
03:04 - of the flour they want
03:05 - to look at the petals.
03:07 - They want to look
03:07 - at the condition
03:08 - of the flowers if there's
03:09 - any stems if there's any
03:10 - the kind of damage to them.
03:12 - They also do.
03:14 - Follow the rulebook surface as
03:15 - they went three stems they went
03:17 - three stamps you
03:18 - don't put four or five in.
03:20 - So some of the different kinds
03:21 - that came in this year we have a
03:23 - blue adulate him
03:24 - and why add uranium.
03:26 - We have some different solo se
03:30 - is this is a crested
03:30 - Ari Cox com.
03:30 - This is a.
03:32 - Another type of alessia.
03:34 - This is a spider
03:35 - player or cleon me.
03:37 - These are some.
03:39 - Cosmos the best base category
03:41 - and the dahlias are always a big
03:42 - drawback here and you can see
03:44 - the different types
03:45 - this is a decorative one.
03:47 - Some of the bigger ones
03:48 - that you may see are a.
03:50 - Decorative and they may be a
03:51 - dinner plate size
03:51 - those are always
03:52 - a big eye catcher around here.
03:54 - And then there's
03:55 - also cactus tile.
03:57 - Dahlias.
03:58 - And then holloway down in the
04:00 - end you can see some gladiolus
04:02 - it's just a
04:03 - nice show a nice variety of
04:04 - colors and styles and types of
04:06 - flowers here
04:07 - and it's always a great
04:08 - show to come see.
04:10 - And.
05:21 - Heights is at and right now we
05:23 - are in the foliage plant section
05:25 - and we are showing the coleus
05:27 - and I just wanted to highlight
05:28 - the variety and how far these
05:30 - coleus have
05:30 - comments some of the.
05:32 - Detailing to the leaf color
05:34 - the leaf shape the texture.
05:36 - May even be the
05:37 - size to some of them.
05:39 - Some of these that are really
05:40 - nice big and fall are this way
05:42 - because the flower stems that
05:43 - came up they have pinched out
05:45 - and they have shaped the plants
05:46 - to make them such a nice round
05:48 - shape like this.
05:49 - But if you ever get a chance
05:50 - to go look at the the nurseries
05:52 - are catalogs it's
05:53 - just amazing to see.
05:55 - The colors from a bright green
05:57 - deprez
05:58 - by colors that may
05:59 - have all three colors then
06:01 - and here's one at the flower
06:02 - stems or onto these are the ones
06:03 - that could be pinched off.
06:05 - And the colors then go down
06:06 - by colors and some really dark
06:08 - speck to the bright colors again
06:10 - great selection of
06:10 - coleus cetera out there.
06:13 - Three.
07:13 - And am Evan snyder here the
07:25 - bloomsburg fair welcome to the
07:39 - sheep show.
07:40 - On the on the
07:41 - judge today for the
07:43 - the open breeding sheep show
07:45 - we're judging the
07:45 - the pair class here.
07:47 - For the eo be Wolverine so.
07:49 - Welcome to the fair have a good
07:51 - time congratulations to all the
07:52 - exhibitors here.
07:54 - Or on TV.
07:56 - You gotta smile.
07:57 - And so we're judging
08:00 - the spring ulam class.
08:04 - Of our all other breeds wool
08:06 - we start here with a
08:07 - pair of Jacob sheep.
08:09 - The the Jacob sheep are known.
08:11 - For their four horns.
08:12 - That they.
08:14 - Will start or fourth horns
08:15 - here and they'll they'll become
08:16 - bigger as they get older.
08:18 - The
08:19 - this is a really nice female
08:20 - with a nice fleece about her
08:21 - very uniform and are fleece.
08:23 - Good hands and a top or
08:25 - were looking for
08:26 - not only the the
08:27 - structure and the mass
08:28 - and the width and the meat
08:29 - but we're looking for the fleet
08:30 - structure.
08:31 - You want to look
08:32 - in three places here.
08:34 - Throughout the
08:35 - the
08:35 - body
08:36 - to determine the.
08:37 - Uniformity of the fleece
08:38 - mountains very nice they're.
08:40 - Doing another.
08:41 - Jacob female here.
08:43 - And
08:50 - how you
08:51 - are
08:52 - and what do we call on this one.
08:54 - Okay.
08:55 - We've got a dorset
08:56 - advantage here.
08:57 - This is a cross bred lamb.
09:00 - Not known for their
09:01 - the best of fleeces
09:02 - but they left
09:03 - they have left
09:04 - the wall here for
09:04 - US to determine
09:05 - there are more known for
09:06 - their muscle and their meat.
09:08 - As we work into a
09:12 - pair of
09:12 - border lies to your use here.
09:15 - This one's actually
09:16 - crossbred okay okay.
09:19 - They're known to have some
09:20 - mass and muscle in their top.
09:22 - Their fleece structure is
09:23 - usually really really good.
09:24 - As this characteristic
09:26 - of this cramp in this curl.
09:27 - You look in again for the
09:29 - uniformity from front to rear.
09:31 - And these are a
09:37 - Scottish blackface
09:45 - breed.
09:47 - These are.
09:48 - Really really massive
09:49 - in their rib and body.
09:51 - Their their fleeces are supposed
09:53 - to be straighter in terms of
09:54 - that lock structure compared
09:56 - to those curls that we've seen.
09:59 - Again we're looking for
10:00 - uniformity here very very.
10:01 - Uniform about her.
10:04 - And we move into a
10:08 - pair of Lincoln's here.
10:15 - That
10:16 - this breed is known
10:17 - for having great
10:18 - great top lines about
10:19 - I'm very straight.
10:21 - A lot of width and
10:22 - dimension in terms of muscle.
10:24 - Again we're we're going to go
10:25 - into fleece here and these are
10:26 - supposed to be that.
10:27 - That Santa claus beard curl.
10:30 - And again we're looking for
10:31 - that that uniformity here this
10:32 - one's very very nice.
10:35 - And on t v smile.
10:41 - Smile.
10:43 - Then we'll move on into.
10:48 - Another breed
10:49 - this is the Columbia's here that
10:50 - fall into this same category
10:52 - these are going to
10:53 - be the bigger stature.
10:54 - Type of sheep compared to
10:55 - some of the other ones that were
10:56 - sorting through this is a.
10:59 - Very very big
10:59 - splashy type of female
11:01 - again we're looking for
11:02 - some link the side
11:03 - and muscle and shape.
11:05 - Then we get into
11:06 - their fleece and.
11:08 - Again we're looking for
11:09 - uniformity here they're
11:10 - not going to have quite the
11:11 - characteristic as some of these
11:12 - that we've had
11:13 - they're known as more of
11:14 - a
11:14 - medium define wall.
11:17 - Really a nice fleece
11:17 - about her as well.
11:19 - And now that we've handled each
11:25 - one individually we're going to.
11:32 - Walk them around and watch
11:33 - watch how they walk and move in
11:35 - terms of their
11:35 - structure and then we'll.
11:37 - We'll play some by how they rank
11:39 - in this class last.
11:41 - Arabella.
11:43 - Let's go full circle
11:44 - back to here okay.
11:46 - Though we're watching them
11:49 - watching a movie.
11:50 - Watching how they
11:51 - set their feet and legs.
11:53 - How much squareness they
11:55 - have right in behind them.
11:58 - Watching how they track and how
11:59 - much balance they have from the
12:00 - side and
12:01 - then we'll make some
12:02 - final decisions on.
12:04 - How they're going
12:13 - to place within
12:22 - the clapham and and now we've
12:39 - seen them all move.
12:40 - A little bit we can make
12:41 - some decisions on.
12:43 - On
12:43 - how we're going to rank them.
12:44 - One through.
12:46 - Whatever the total is
12:47 - here there's two four six.
12:49 - Eight
12:50 - ten eleven we have
12:51 - eleven placings here
12:52 - and I'll work through
12:53 - that about how I
12:54 - make some priorities
12:56 - of how they move
12:57 - how they handle
12:57 - them and how their
12:59 - fleet structure is in
13:00 - terms of uniformity.
13:02 - And and let's bring this one.
13:35 - That one's going to be
13:39 - the least ranking just her
13:44 - her positives are the
13:45 - are the least of this group
13:47 - she doesn't have quite the fleet
13:48 - structure that some of these
13:49 - have so.
13:50 - Far down in the eleventh hole.
13:53 - Analysts continue ranking them.
14:00 - From the bottom to the
14:02 - first part of the class here.
14:04 - Three and and
14:24 - getting down to the.
14:59 - My favorites in terms of what
15:00 - they bring to the
15:01 - table as far as
15:02 - positives.
15:03 - I may walk them again here
15:05 - to kind of break break
15:06 - the tie or whatever but
15:07 - it's a nice group
15:08 - here as a whole
15:08 - even though there's a lot of
15:09 - differences and.
15:11 - They're they're very nice
15:12 - representation of the breeds.
15:14 - And and as bring
15:39 - this one in five.
16:10 - Keep her on the side.
16:14 - And three
16:50 - two.
16:52 - Glasses it again very hard to
16:54 - to determine.
16:55 - An exact placing here because
16:56 - there's so many breeds sorted
16:58 - and
16:58 - they offer a lot of different
16:59 - things your forest I do think
17:01 - we can we continue to pull them
17:03 - apart and just study structure
17:04 - and balance them
17:05 - and what they bring in terms of
17:06 - fleas I think you'd get a nice
17:08 - line up your forests
17:09 - Lincoln you just a really a
17:10 - neat picture from the side side.
17:12 - That one is square and really
17:14 - good in terms of her hip and top
17:16 - shape.
17:16 - Really good comfortable fleece
17:18 - I think that one's very uniform
17:19 - she's very fresh and young
17:20 - and looks like she's going to
17:21 - continue to go for
17:23 - a lover shoulder to chest I
17:24 - think that one
17:25 - just ties a lot of
17:25 - nice things together here forest
17:27 - Colombia you come second and
17:28 - closely follows where this one
17:29 - runs the right way
17:31 - I love her happen
17:32 - great top shape about that
17:33 - when you run your hands down her
17:34 - spine and there's
17:35 - not a hole in her
17:36 - good fleece and is
17:37 - a neat package
17:38 - from the side again
17:40 - very good new breed character
17:41 - I think there's a nice
17:41 - female for that second hole
17:43 - some give or take in the next
17:44 - three and you can flop them
17:45 - however you want
17:46 - to do I think this to
17:47 - another big square high
17:48 - volume type of female
17:50 - in this Lincoln knew
17:50 - that comes third
17:51 - maybe her face.
17:53 - You get into it
17:53 - maybe not quite as
17:54 - as unique and as much character
17:57 - as we have in
17:57 - those first two but
17:58 - good voted very very square and
18:00 - I think again one that's very
18:01 - growth the other gets a
18:02 - nice female know Jacob
18:03 - comes for
18:04 - that one I really really enjoy
18:06 - the handle of that cheap
18:07 - achievements really really
18:08 - wide and massive for what those
18:09 - sheep bring to the table.
18:11 - That one can be
18:11 - a little bit bigger
18:12 - bone if you want to get real.
18:14 - Real critical weather but
18:15 - I think one that's
18:16 - very unique and
18:17 - neat made in terms of top shape
18:18 - Columbia you can buy another
18:20 - real long sighted
18:21 - good look into
18:22 - this I love that one's.
18:23 - Head in terms of
18:24 - a great character
18:25 - maybe a little easier
18:26 - right behind her shoulder
18:27 - maybe that
18:28 - will come about as she
18:29 - continues to grow and.
18:30 - I think a big big female
18:31 - next year as a yearling
18:32 - this is a great set all the way
18:33 - down let's give a big round of
18:34 - applause with a great
18:35 - group regulations.
18:37 - And.
19:07 - Morning.
19:08 - You're at the Rupert
19:10 - one room school
19:11 - and you are welcome here they
19:12 - were at the bloomsburg fair.
19:14 - In the historical section.
19:16 - This building was built in
19:18 - eighteen sixty
19:18 - nine and used as a
19:19 - school till nineteen sixty four.
19:22 - It's been moved twice has
19:23 - been flooded three times
19:25 - and this school building
19:26 - is an amazing place
19:27 - I understand you're going to be
19:30 - invited inside my
19:30 - school building
19:31 - and you will love what you see.
19:34 - This building is originally.
19:37 - I would have held
19:38 - the eight grades
19:38 - at the very end sixth grades
19:40 - were taught in the same building
19:42 - and.
19:42 - Watch
19:43 - the floor watch all the features
19:46 - you will be impressed with the
19:47 - originality of this particular
19:49 - building
19:50 - we've incorporated a lot of
19:52 - historical books
19:53 - are historical desks
19:55 - the blackboard is original
19:56 - the floor is original oh
19:58 - and I will tell you
19:59 - about all those things
20:01 - welcome
20:01 - to the
20:02 - Rupert one room school.
20:05 - It's time for the data star.
20:11 - I've called the children
20:12 - in for morning recess.
20:14 - They will file in.
20:16 - The smallest
20:17 - children sit up front.
20:20 - If you're big enough to
20:21 - come to school you're
20:22 - if you are if you are
20:24 - big enough to sit in the
20:26 - front seats the smallest seats
20:28 - with your feet on the floor
20:29 - your back against the back your
20:30 - bottom on the sea
20:32 - you can to school
20:33 - and it wasn't a certain
20:35 - age it was a certain
20:36 - size
20:37 - and as you got
20:38 - older and smarter.
20:40 - And bigger
20:41 - you went to bigger
20:42 - and bigger bigger seats
20:44 - you'll notice the front
20:45 - seats don't have that hole.
20:47 - Which was the inkwell.
20:50 - Children come into the
20:52 - school here at the fair
20:54 - and asked me what that
20:55 - hole is for and I tell them
20:57 - it's where they ran the
20:58 - wires for their computers
20:59 - and then I
21:00 - tell them the real
21:01 - reason for them
21:02 - prequels
21:04 - this is the original
21:05 - teacher's desk and chair.
21:08 - And the recitation benches
21:09 - this is where she would have
21:10 - actually taught
21:11 - people ask how
21:13 - did she teach eight
21:15 - grades at once because she did.
21:16 - What she would
21:17 - do is crawl call to.
21:19 - Age groups up maybe she would
21:20 - have a fourth
21:21 - grade history group
21:22 - going here
21:23 - at a second grade arithmetic
21:25 - here.
21:26 - They didn't have math
21:27 - they had a risk fnatic
21:28 - and she would teach
21:30 - by putting the
21:31 - problems on the board
21:32 - these children
21:33 - will be using slates
21:34 - these children would
21:35 - be using one text
21:37 - reading and passing it to the
21:38 - next child and passing it to the
21:39 - next child
21:41 - and she asked and
21:42 - answered all their questions.
21:44 - Meanwhile everybody
21:45 - else is doing seatwork.
21:47 - Nobody would interrupt what
21:48 - the teacher was doing up here
21:50 - because
21:51 - they didn't want to be.
21:53 - Get in trouble
21:54 - so they would turn
21:55 - and ask the person
21:56 - right behind them.
21:58 - To help them and that
21:59 - way if you learn it yourself
22:01 - and you teach it
22:02 - to somebody else
22:03 - you've learned
22:03 - to better yourself.
22:04 - And that information
22:06 - is out here.
22:07 - The
22:08 - the small children didn't need
22:09 - the fourth grade listen or the
22:10 - second grade lesson
22:12 - but it's being
22:13 - introduced to them
22:14 - and the kids that
22:14 - have already had it
22:16 - is being reviewed.
22:17 - That plates that you see here.
22:20 - Blackboards were
22:21 - originally blackboards.
22:22 - That's why we left that piece
22:24 - there it was aboard
22:26 - painted black
22:27 - but the rest of these
22:28 - we're original slates
22:30 - and those were
22:31 - used we practice star
22:33 - Palmer method of handwriting.
22:35 - The.
22:37 - Lithographs you see always
22:39 - able on one side
22:40 - George on the other.
22:42 - We always pledge allegiance
22:43 - the American flag in the morning
22:45 - prayer
22:46 - and
22:47 - Bible reading.
22:49 - You know a.
22:50 - One room schoolhouse
22:52 - because they
22:53 - are always located on the ground
22:54 - north to south with three
22:55 - windows on both sides.
22:57 - The reason for the three
22:58 - windows and why they're directly
23:00 - across from each other
23:02 - is because that's the
23:03 - blessing of the father son
23:05 - and holy ghost on our building.
23:07 - In addition to that
23:08 - the reason why
23:10 - directly across from each other
23:10 - is the superstition was
23:12 - if there was a place
23:13 - for the devil to come in
23:14 - there had to be a place
23:16 - for the devil to go out.
23:17 - Every day started and ended.
23:20 - With all the children
23:21 - working together
23:23 - in this
23:23 - a
23:24 - cooperative community
23:26 - so that everybody was learning
23:28 - and
23:29 - there was no
23:29 - problem with discipline
23:31 - because if you got in
23:32 - trouble here at school.
23:34 - You got it much worse at home.
23:36 - So.
23:37 - You think that this is a we
23:38 - should go back to the old days
23:40 - well reading writing
23:41 - arithmetic are important
23:43 - and they're still important
23:45 - let's keep that.
23:47 - Energy that comes
23:48 - from techno elegy
23:49 - and bring it back to
23:50 - reading writing and arithmetic
23:52 - with respect
23:53 - and responsibility
23:54 - added to those three rs.
23:56 - Thank you for coming
23:57 - to my Rupert school.
23:59 - Have a great day.
24:28 - Morning where the
24:29 - blocks from his job
24:31 - at the bloomsburg fair.
24:33 - Behind the barton house.
24:34 - My name's Brad grey
24:36 - and this is Harold English.
24:38 - We're here.
24:40 - About.
24:41 - Eighteen seventy years so
24:43 - eighteen fifty eighteen seventy.
24:45 - Up until the present day.
24:47 - Doing blacksmithing.
24:49 - Which is the working of iron.
24:51 - And steel
24:53 - and other metals.
24:54 - Usually
24:55 - heating them up.
24:57 - Cutting them.
24:58 - Hitting them
24:59 - molding them.
25:01 - And today we're making.
25:03 - A.
25:04 - S hook.
25:05 - Which is used very commonly for.
25:08 - Hanging things from
25:09 - other hooks or from.
25:11 - Fireplaces and so forth.
25:14 - So he has steel in the fire.
25:16 - And he's going to.
25:18 - Cut it off here.
25:20 - What he has in the.
25:22 - Anvil
25:23 - which is why these.
25:24 - Is what's called a hot cut.
25:27 - Or.
25:28 - Cut hearty.
25:31 - And he cuts it nearly off
25:33 - and then.
25:35 - Twisted.
25:37 - So you have a few.
25:39 - Several.
25:40 - Half a minute
25:41 - depending on the
25:42 - size of the stock.
25:44 - To work on it.
25:45 - Presently.
25:47 - Putting a point on it.
25:52 - And.
25:53 - He works backwards.
25:55 - With his hammer.
25:58 - We generally do everything from
26:00 - square to round.
26:02 - Or square to octagonal to round.
26:05 - Because we can.
26:08 - Weekend we know
26:08 - where we're going
26:09 - and we know what the steel is
26:11 - doing.
26:13 - Back in the fire
26:14 - eating it up.
26:17 - Generally we
26:18 - work at
26:19 - anywhere from
26:20 - say fifteen hundred
26:22 - twenty one hundred degrees.
26:25 - Now maybe around
26:25 - fifteen hundred.
26:28 - Just
26:29 - as you see he.
26:30 - Squared it
26:31 - he.
26:32 - Made it octagonal
26:33 - and now he's taking the.
26:35 - Final.
26:37 - Bridges off and making it round.
26:39 - What he's doing
26:41 - now is bending it
26:42 - over the side coming backwards.
26:44 - And creating what's
26:45 - called a rat tailed.
26:46 - Which is very common and
26:48 - a lot of.
26:49 - Colonial.
26:53 - Ironwork.
26:54 - Is dipping it in there to freeze
26:56 - it or to keep it from moving.
26:58 - Because now it's in the heat.
27:01 - He's going to heat that area.
27:03 - That he just was working with.
27:06 - Backup
27:07 - but he doesn't want
27:08 - to burn that small area.
27:09 - Nor when he hits it.
27:11 - Does he want to.
27:14 - Make.
27:14 - That area move
27:16 - because he's done
27:17 - such a wonderful job at.
27:19 - Making that crit twist.
27:21 - So he.
27:22 - Cools it again.
27:23 - He wants a little bit hotter
27:25 - so it's back into the fire.
27:29 - If he would just leave it
27:30 - where it is and not cool
27:32 - it
27:32 - may just burn.
27:34 - So he wants to keep it
27:35 - cool he's going to hit on it.
27:37 - To
27:38 - make that.
27:40 - Curve or turn.
27:43 - So now he's.
27:45 - Creating the hook.
27:50 - Tidying it up.
27:59 - He turns his attention
28:00 - to the other end.
28:04 - Using the tongs
28:05 - he doesn't get
28:06 - his fingers burned.
28:07 - On that very hot end
28:08 - even though that looks.
28:10 - Cool.
28:11 - That's still probably around
28:12 - seven hundred degrees.
28:14 - So it will.
28:15 - Burn the fingers.
28:18 - This is a bottom draft forge
28:21 - the air comes up from the
28:23 - bottom as he turns that handle
28:25 - there's multiple fan blades
28:27 - like a paddle wheel in there.
28:29 - Blows it up through
28:31 - it increases the
28:32 - heat from just an idle.
28:34 - To a full blown roar.
28:39 - He's going to do very
28:41 - much the same on the other side.
28:51 - Pointing it.
28:56 - Making a square.
28:59 - Or you would make it square
29:01 - even without the round bar.
29:03 - Because you can tell where
29:05 - the edges are and he can tell
29:07 - how far he's made it.
29:10 - With it's square
29:11 - like that he's
29:11 - taking the edges off.
29:14 - He's taking more edges off
29:16 - and as he takes more edges off
29:18 - becomes more
29:19 - and more round.
29:26 - Hearing it
29:27 - at that heat
29:29 - really doesn't forge it.
29:31 - But it plan issues it
29:32 - where it polishes it it.
29:35 - Makes it.
29:36 - Takes the little bumps out and
29:37 - makes the bumps much smoother.
29:40 - Back into the fire
29:41 - and heating it back up.
29:43 - The thinner
29:44 - the metal is.
29:45 - The faster it heats
29:47 - so he has to watch it.
29:49 - A little more carefully.
29:50 - Then when it's full.
29:52 - Full size.
29:54 - Gently.
29:56 - Over the edge
29:57 - backwards
29:58 - to make that little rat tail.
30:07 - Straightening things
30:08 - out back into the forge.
30:11 - Cooling it off and then
30:12 - back into the forge.
30:20 - Heavier portion of the hook.
30:23 - Gets a little head start.
30:38 - Cooling it.
30:39 - So the the area.
30:42 - That we
30:43 - work in.
30:44 - Is called the smithy.
30:46 - May
30:47 - people will say the
30:47 - Smith or something but.
30:49 - This is the smithy.
30:51 - What he's working
30:52 - with is a forge.
30:55 - And now he's
30:58 - because he's cooled that
31:00 - he can hit that without it
31:01 - moving.
31:03 - And turned to.
31:04 - Go hook.
31:22 - So what he's going to do
31:23 - now is put it back in the forge.
31:26 - But
31:27 - he's going to.
31:28 - Heat.
31:29 - The middle portion of the.
31:31 - Arm.
31:31 - If you tried to do this.
31:33 - You could
31:34 - certainly struggle
31:35 - with it and twist it.
31:36 - With enough force.
31:38 - But.
31:39 - With him.
31:40 - Heating it up.
31:42 - It makes it.
31:43 - Much more.
31:44 - And the.
31:46 - The amount of force
31:47 - that you need goes from
31:49 - tremendous
31:50 - to twisting it just like
31:52 - a piece of Clay.
31:55 - And actually we do
31:56 - use Clay a lotta times.
31:58 - With the things to
31:59 - make new things and
32:01 - to test out how we're going to
32:03 - form something
32:04 - our going to twisted
32:05 - and the steps that we're
32:06 - going to do to do something.
32:09 - And so a little bit of heat.
32:14 - Here.
32:15 - While we're burning is a.
32:20 - Buy terminus or a soft coal.
32:23 - It.
32:23 - Is softer than the
32:25 - anthracite coal.
32:27 - It has a lot of.
32:29 - Plasticizers which
32:30 - cause it to clump together.
32:33 - Whereas anthracite.
32:34 - Just goes into ash shes.
32:37 - And
32:37 - it just works a
32:38 - little bit better.
32:40 - For this process.
32:42 - So he grabs it in the vice.
32:47 - And he's going to use.
32:49 - High tech twisting.
32:51 - Wrench.
32:53 - And you say it's just
32:54 - like one or two fingers.
32:57 - And it
32:58 - it twists very gently.
33:05 - What's coming off of it.
33:07 - Is called scale
33:08 - it's
33:09 - iron oxide.
33:10 - Is just like a rust.
33:12 - The oxygen from
33:13 - the forge the heat.
33:15 - Causes it
33:16 - super fast rusting.
33:18 - And that comes off
33:19 - at and.
33:21 - He's now brushing
33:22 - it off with brush.
33:25 - Making it.
33:28 - But job.
33:31 - Shiny or.
33:34 - He's got a handful of.
33:37 - Bees wax there.
33:39 - And again that's probably.
33:42 - Seven hundred degrees.
33:45 - One tries never to.
33:48 - Get between not
33:48 - metal in the ground.
33:57 - Beeswax.
33:59 - Acts just like any other wax.
34:01 - It
34:01 - protects it from.
34:03 - The moisture.
34:05 - Brightens it up a little bit.
34:09 - And on utensils it's food-safe.
34:28 - He's working fairly.
34:30 - A fairly hot.
34:31 - Sometimes you want
34:32 - to do that a little bit.
34:33 - Cooler
34:34 - it doesn't burn as much but.
34:37 - When it's done that hot
34:38 - it actually kind of carbonized
34:40 - and you get a black.
34:43 - The.
34:43 - Coloration to the.
34:46 - To it when you're done.
34:48 - Almost like looking at
34:49 - it it almost looks painted.
34:51 - But it's actually not.
35:14 - And.
35:16 - Except.
35:17 - When that cools down
35:18 - it'll be ready to hang.
35:21 - Pots.
35:23 - Plants.
35:26 - Cookware whatever
35:27 - you need to hang.
35:55 - What he has in his
35:56 - hands is a pair of tongs
35:58 - we have just a few here.
36:00 - But.
36:01 - Oftentimes you'll
36:02 - go into the smithy.
36:04 - And you'll see
36:05 - hundreds of tongs because.
36:07 - If they don't
36:08 - hold what you're
36:09 - hitting.
36:10 - Very tightly and very well.
36:13 - It may come up and.
36:15 - Hit you in the face.
36:17 - Hit you in the leg.
36:18 - Burn
36:19 - somebody else.
36:21 - So.
36:22 - We have different ones
36:23 - for different pieces of metal.
36:25 - So
36:26 - thank you very much for.
36:28 - Attending our little.
36:31 - Blacksmith shop
36:32 - and I hope that you
36:33 - have a good day.
36:35 - Thank you.
36:37 - At.
36:57 - That.
37:03 - Could afternoon.
37:04 - You're in the
37:05 - historic section of the
37:06 - bloomsburg fair.
37:07 - The fair started at
37:08 - eighteen fifty five
37:10 - the same time.
37:11 - The barton house was built.
37:13 - The man that build
37:14 - a Caleb barton.
37:15 - Myself.
37:17 - Decide he added that he would
37:18 - treat his neighbors through
37:19 - the opportunity to show
37:21 - some of the neat
37:21 - things that they'd grown.
37:24 - I have a mill up that way.
37:26 - Still standing today.
37:27 - The fair and the
37:29 - and the.
37:31 - House are
37:31 - very intimately
37:32 - connected chronologically.
37:34 - Because of the fact that
37:35 - it's been here so long where.
37:38 - We decided to turn into a
37:39 - museum the way it used to be
37:41 - back in eighty fifty
37:42 - five when it was built.
37:44 - Right now we're standing at
37:45 - the edge of the gardens and the
37:46 - gardens are maintained by the.
37:48 - Efficient Greek herb guild
37:50 - they do a beautiful
37:51 - job of making sure that.
37:52 - Everything is at it's peak
37:54 - at the time of the fair.
37:55 - We have
37:56 - renos we have a
37:57 - tent off to our left
37:58 - we have in the
37:59 - background we have the.
38:03 - Pennsylvania bucktail
38:04 - brigade or guardian or property.
38:06 - There's a lot to see
38:07 - around the building.
38:09 - Inside the building.
38:11 - We have we've turned the clock
38:12 - back to the way it was when it
38:14 - was built.
38:15 - The decor the.
38:17 - Is the the wallpaper
38:19 - the floor and mature
38:20 - original to the building.
38:22 - Some things had to be.
38:23 - Researched
38:24 - quite excessively to figure out
38:25 - exactly what Lucy to look like.
38:27 - Because people have lived in
38:28 - the building for well over one
38:30 - hundred years
38:31 - and we've done a
38:32 - good job to be as
38:34 - historically accurate as we can.
38:36 - It is
38:36 - around the outside we
38:37 - have old farm machinery
38:39 - some of which may be in pretty.
38:41 - Poor repair
38:42 - with some of it looks like it
38:44 - could be put to work today.
38:46 - We have an old fashioned
38:47 - steamroller over that way which
38:49 - I I grew up loving
38:50 - mechanical things so I
38:52 - I like to look at all
38:53 - the old machinery
38:55 - is really for fascinating.
38:57 - We have
38:57 - along with the
38:58 - reenactors in the backyard
39:00 - we have reenactors in the front
39:01 - we have our civil war surgeon.
39:03 - Who can show you
39:05 - all the great advances
39:06 - made during the civil war
39:08 - but still makes you
39:09 - appreciate today's medicine
39:10 - we've come a long ways.
39:12 - When I tour the
39:13 - inside with people
39:15 - the women's they all those
39:16 - dresses are so beautiful I would
39:18 - love to live back then.
39:20 - And I always caution them on a
39:22 - dose of reality.
39:24 - Many of the things
39:25 - that are inside of
39:26 - the way that the wealthy
39:28 - people lived at the time.
39:30 - Today are.
39:31 - Even people with
39:32 - very few resources
39:33 - have life much easier.
39:35 - And I point out but what it'd
39:36 - be like to have to walk through
39:38 - the snow at three o'clock
39:39 - in the morning to go out to
39:41 - that room over there.
39:42 - Where people are much
39:43 - friendlier than they have.
39:45 - To holler for adults
39:47 - to holder for children.
39:48 - There's so much you
39:49 - can see when you come
39:51 - to the bloomsburg fair.
39:52 - There's a neat place to hang out
39:54 - wherever porch and where people
39:56 - can sit down and relax and
39:57 - enjoy themselves.
39:59 - If they're hot
40:00 - they can sit in
40:01 - the shade if they're
40:02 - cold they can sit in the sun.
40:04 - Beautiful place to
40:05 - spend an afternoon.
40:07 - And.
40:33 - Thank you again for.
40:36 - Coming on our journey today
40:37 - through the buns burgh fair
40:38 - without you folks
40:39 - we cannot put this.
40:40 - Program together
40:41 - and we really appreciate
40:42 - when you come
40:43 - also we have some
40:44 - events throughout the year
40:46 - you can watch US on our
40:47 - website at most workfare dot
40:49 - com also our Facebook page.
40:51 - Bloomsburg fair
40:52 - and interact with US there
40:54 - or you can call the main office
40:55 - at five seven o seven eight
40:57 - four forty nine forty nine
40:59 - and throughout the summer we
41:00 - have all kinds
41:00 - of different shows
41:01 - that go on here at
41:01 - the bloomsburg fair
41:02 - that you can
41:03 - come see throughout the year.
41:05 - And we would again would
41:06 - like to really thank you for.
41:07 - Taking this journey
41:08 - today with US
41:09 - through the bloomsburg fair.
