13:46 - And we were wandering

13:48 - Carolina trying to

13:49 - get to the shore and.

13:51 - Apparently he looked at.

13:53 - Their hills mountains there and

13:55 - he looked at a road

13:56 - that was winding up

13:58 - through the

13:59 - mountains and he turned to

14:00 - me and he used to call me doc.

14:02 - And he go.

14:04 - Hey doc.

14:06 - How would you like to follow

14:07 - a retreating army through that.

14:11 - And I'd go.

14:13 - I wouldn't.

14:15 - And he goes

14:16 - why.

14:18 - And I said.

14:20 - If.

14:21 - It's so narrow I mean.

14:23 - They just

14:24 - they

14:25 - are always higher than you are.

14:28 - And he goes.

14:29 - Well that's right.

14:31 - And.

14:31 - What what he was.

14:33 - Obviously thinking

14:34 - about at the time

14:35 - and he wouldn't

14:36 - ever tell me this.

14:38 - But

14:38 - he was in the thirty

14:40 - sixth division in Italy.

14:43 - I was at solano.

14:45 - And then moved north on

14:47 - highway six towards Rome.

14:50 - And to get there they had to.

14:52 - Pass through.

14:54 - Mountain

14:55 - regions.

14:57 - Where the casino was he

14:58 - was in the battle of the casino.

15:01 - And then.

15:02 - The repeated river.

15:04 - And.

15:05 - They had to chase the Germans.

15:08 - And

15:09 - he.

15:11 - He

15:11 - he he never paused to tell me.

15:14 - What it was like

15:15 - with him doing that.

15:18 - It's just that that's how

15:19 - he would talk about war ii.

15:21 - How would you like to do that.

15:24 - And.

15:25 - I.

15:26 - He also talked about.

15:29 - I.

15:30 - Blind attacks and I

15:31 - mentioned that in here.

15:33 - And not ever mentioning

15:34 - that he was involved in one.

15:37 - And that is at the repeater.

15:41 - Where the thirty sixth division

15:42 - was sent across

15:43 - a swollen stream.

15:46 - And attacked a German

15:47 - German positions

15:48 - without even knowing

15:49 - they were mined.

15:51 - And.

15:53 - The thirty sixth

15:54 - division lost probably

15:56 - more men there in one afternoon

15:58 - than they did

16:00 - at any other place in the war

16:02 - and they were the they

16:04 - had the heaviest number

16:06 - of casualties of any

16:07 - division in Europe.

16:08 - And.

16:10 - So you've got

16:11 - mountains you've got

16:12 - blind attacks he was

16:14 - involved in himself.

16:16 - And.

16:17 - But it was always like hey

16:19 - how would you like to do

16:21 - that.

16:22 - Or what do you think about this.

16:25 - Is how he'd present it.

16:27 - And.

16:29 - He would talk about.

16:30 - General officers

16:31 - he really admired.

16:34 - And Fred Walker the commander of

16:35 - the thirty sixth division

16:36 - was one of them.

16:38 - And.

16:41 - He talked about

16:42 - we always were well

16:43 - equipped we always had

16:45 - adequate munitions.

16:47 - We were always fed.

16:50 - I.

16:52 - And we won

16:53 - although it was a slugfest.

16:56 - And.

16:58 - You know that just

16:59 - totally relate to George Meade.

17:02 - And and and the end and his.

17:06 - Operations in the

17:07 - gettysburg camp of

17:08 - it relates to all campaign.

17:10 - And I think that's what is

17:12 - striking about your approach.

17:14 - You have a

17:15 - mastery of the tactics

17:16 - and what happened on the ground.

17:19 - But you also have a

17:20 - deep understanding of.

17:22 - Operations.

17:23 - At the operational

17:24 - level excuse me

17:25 - and I'm struck by what

17:27 - I had read because it

17:28 - reminded me that.

17:30 - All of your books have a real.

17:32 - Sensitivity to.

17:34 - Some of the issues

17:35 - that we often don't

17:36 - pay attention to we're

17:37 - here at gettysburg

17:38 - we're looking at the point

17:40 - of contact or engagement

17:41 - and we forget about the

17:42 - operational issues

17:43 - that are so crucial.

17:45 - To explain what

17:46 - actually happened

17:47 - tactically on the ground and I.

17:49 - Was against so struck by that

17:50 - I mean your father gave you this

17:51 - great gift and

17:52 - that is putting you

17:53 - in a situation where you have to

17:55 - be analytical

17:56 - about warfare I think

17:58 - but then on top that

17:59 - he gave you a great gift

18:00 - by saying you know what

18:01 - logistics.

18:02 - Matter.

18:03 - That that that's

18:04 - absolutely crucial

18:05 - that.

18:05 - Matter

18:06 - and I

18:07 - know no campaign

18:08 - I know of.

18:10 - Shows that more clearly than

18:12 - the gettysburg campaign.

18:15 - But before we

18:15 - talk about that real

18:16 - quick I just want to

18:17 - ask you about this

18:18 - why is it

18:19 - that George Gordon the.

18:22 - Does not have a reputation.

18:24 - That.

18:27 - A reputation

18:28 - that has I would say

18:29 - popularity is a

18:30 - better word it's their

18:31 - reputation just quite

18:32 - simply why is he not

18:33 - popular why is it that when

18:34 - people come to gettysburg

18:36 - you can find a

18:36 - bobblehead doll of

18:38 - Joshua Chamberlain.

18:40 - And that's something like.

18:43 - He has a whole

18:43 - Chamberlain gas in terms of

18:45 - how he is perceived

18:47 - we know the killer angels

18:49 - and the movie has

18:49 - a lot to do about that

18:49 - but why is it that

18:50 - the commander of

18:51 - the army of the potomac

18:53 - who was one of the

18:54 - great battles of the civil war

18:55 - why is it that he

18:56 - doesn't resonate

18:58 - or register with

18:59 - popular audiences.

19:00 - It's because of what

19:01 - happened to him

19:03 - and to the army

19:04 - on which.

19:05 - Suite.

19:06 - Of.

19:07 - The defeated the

19:08 - army of northern Virginia.

19:11 - And.

19:12 - Made

19:13 - bore the full brunt.

19:15 - Of.

19:16 - Of Lincoln's

19:17 - and his closest confidants.

19:21 - And including hallock.

19:23 - There are kind of scorn at.

19:26 - His performance during the what

19:28 - they perceived as

19:29 - his performance.

19:31 - During his pursuit of late.

19:33 - And.

19:35 - I try to go to great

19:36 - lengths to try to

19:38 - unravel that.

19:41 - I've I've talked to people

20:24 - He did it by.

20:26 - Choosing a parallel

20:27 - route which is the.

20:29 - The the the the

20:30 - the the p proper.

20:32 - Means by which you should

20:34 - you should pursue an enemy.

20:38 - And.

20:39 - Lincoln even regarded

20:40 - that as avoiding

20:41 - conflict so as to

20:42 - let Lee crossed the

20:44 - potomac river because

20:45 - he chose that route.

20:47 - And yet.

20:48 - You know all the

20:49 - military theorists of

20:50 - the nineteenth

20:51 - century would have said

20:52 - and did say.

20:53 - That is the appropriate

20:55 - way to pursue an enemy like

20:57 - not through a mountain pass.

21:00 - You go on a parallel route

21:01 - because what it does it

21:03 - causes the enemy to speed up.

21:05 - For fear you may get

21:06 - there before they do.

21:08 - And so long as the

21:09 - defeated enemy speeds up

21:11 - they start to lose their

21:14 - formation they

21:14 - they there's a Trisha.

21:17 - In a retreating army.

21:19 - And so it's the preferred route

21:21 - and me

21:22 - pose that to every

21:23 - one of his corps

21:24 - commanders and they

21:25 - all agreed absolutely.

21:27 - Follow up.

21:29 - You mentioned Lincoln

21:30 - here let's talk about now

21:32 - Lincoln's

21:33 - decision to offer me command and

21:35 - can you.

21:36 - Tell US a little bit about

21:37 - that situation in particular.

21:39 - Could you help US understand.

21:42 - What mead confronted because it

21:43 - seems to me in reading your book

21:45 - that other

21:46 - historians and I'm not

21:47 - asking for anyone

21:48 - to name names here

21:49 - but the other historic

21:51 - maybe not

21:51 - fully appreciated

21:53 - the great challenges

21:54 - that need confronted but he's

21:55 - giving the command so could you.

21:57 - Give US outside he

21:58 - described what mead

21:59 - faced and what his

22:00 - decision making was.

22:02 - It

22:02 - that the decision is kind of

22:04 - odd in the sense that.

22:07 - No sooner had.

22:12 - the potomac back

22:13 - across the

22:14 - rappahannock river after

22:15 - chancellorsville.

22:17 - Over the objections of almost

22:19 - every corps commander he had.

22:21 - And of the Lincoln

22:22 - administration

22:23 - frankly out of hallock

22:24 - general halleck.

22:26 - Then.

22:28 - There began discussions

22:30 - of.

22:31 - Someone to replace him.

22:33 - And those discussions

22:34 - as we all know.

22:36 - Very likely included

22:37 - on the second of

22:38 - June a meeting

22:39 - with John Reynolds.

22:41 - In in Washington.

22:44 - But the

22:45 - what I found interesting

22:46 - about that whole

22:47 - thing leading up to

22:49 - the twenty seventh

22:50 - of June when finally

22:52 - orders are prepared

22:54 - to

22:54 - to make.

22:56 - Mead commander of the army.

22:58 - Is how long they'd simply

23:01 - Donald.

23:04 - The Lincoln and his closest

23:06 - advisers they just sat on it.

23:09 - And here you are on

23:10 - the twenty seventh of

23:11 - June hooker is still in

23:13 - command of the army

23:14 - of the potomac.

23:15 - And you've got lie now spread

23:17 - out all through the

23:18 - cumberland valley

23:20 - and as far east as

23:21 - wrightsville and up.

23:24 - North is near Harrisburg

23:26 - and you've still got.

23:27 - Joe hooker and command.

23:29 - Finally they come

23:30 - to the conclusion.

23:32 - That

23:32 - they're going to

23:33 - have to just bite

23:34 - the bullet and name somebody.

23:36 - And they named George made.

23:39 - And they order him to

23:40 - take command they don't.

23:42 - Go to him and say

23:43 - would you do it like

23:44 - they did every other

23:45 - commander of the army

23:46 - they go and say we're going to

23:48 - order you to take command.

23:51 - And so.

23:52 - Fearful.

23:53 - That they're going to get a no.

23:56 - It's incredible really

23:58 - and I think it's because that

23:59 - poor army had suffered so much

24:02 - so

24:03 - long.

24:04 - That I'd want to battle

24:05 - against this enemy

24:06 - and the entire time

24:07 - it's been in existence.

24:09 - And it's lost

24:10 - tremendous casualties.

24:12 - And as a consequence

24:13 - they have a draft going

24:14 - and are going to

24:14 - be riots in the streets

24:16 - of new York over that.

24:18 - Because this army can't win.

24:21 - And here they

24:22 - fool around for

24:23 - more than a month.

24:25 - Until they finally

24:26 - Porter need to be commander.

24:29 - A real quick

24:30 - question about that.

24:32 - There

24:32 - a perception that

24:34 - either mead was apolitical

24:35 - or that he was conservative in

24:37 - what the question then is.

24:39 - You know

24:39 - Reynolds said no.

24:42 - I'm correct in saying

24:43 - that yes when Reynolds

24:44 - is off with John

24:45 - Reynolds is awkward

24:46 - command he says no.

24:47 - No yes.

24:48 - So.

24:49 - Why why mead

24:51 - is it because they see him I

24:53 - mean obviously he has a record

24:55 - that's a solid record me does

24:57 - but is there a perception

24:58 - that meets a political

25:00 - and I want your take

25:01 - on that as well did the.

25:02 - Illustration say hey

25:03 - man we got a dude here

25:04 - who's a political

25:05 - he's not gone to

25:06 - this rat's nest that

25:07 - other people have

25:08 - gotten into right

25:09 - and then

25:10 - I want your take was

25:14 - mean was

25:16 - always close to the vest

25:17 - with all of his opinions.

25:21 - Except when absurd lately.

25:26 - His military opinions on things.

25:28 - His opinions of

25:29 - others all that he

25:31 - kept strictly to

25:32 - himself and his wife.

25:35 - And he never talk politics.

25:37 - He disliked it.

25:38 - Never talk politics

25:40 - and.

25:41 - So yeah I think

25:42 - there's a lot to be said

25:43 - for the fact that they

25:45 - choose him because he

25:46 - is a political.

25:48 - But he also a solid

25:49 - front line officer.

25:52 - Without question.

25:54 - Tsunami as the range of

25:56 - a command and you've

25:57 - already spelled out

25:58 - for US that his army

25:59 - is widely dispersed and

26:01 - his intelligence

26:01 - information about

26:02 - the whereabouts

26:03 - of the confederate.

26:04 - Which we often don't consider

26:06 - that's a pretty spotty.

26:08 - Would say.

26:09 - So punters to meet shoes

26:10 - when he has command and

26:12 - and what his next steps were.

26:15 - As he's trying to

26:15 - get a feel for where

26:16 - the enemy is and

26:17 - where he shouldn't do.

26:19 - One thing winning I

26:20 - can I can say about.

26:22 - George made

26:23 - I've never seen this quite with

26:25 - anybody else that.

26:27 - I've I've ever studied

26:28 - and.

26:29 - He no sooner takes

26:30 - command of the army.

26:32 - Then everything

26:33 - one could imagine.

26:36 - To.

26:37 - Have.

26:38 - That could be

26:39 - thrown in his past.

26:42 - Is thrown in his path.

26:44 - And it starts with

26:45 - he's in

26:46 - he's in his tent.

26:48 - Looking at maps

26:49 - on June twenty eight.

26:51 - And what happens

26:52 - he gets a dispatch.

26:54 - From the war department saying.

26:57 - Words to the effect that.

27:00 - Well.

27:01 - You have.

27:02 - You have just lost.

27:04 - Two Bridges on the

27:06 - Baltimore and Ohio railroad

27:10 - and all your telegraph

27:10 - wires have been cut.

27:12 - And.

27:13 - I.

27:15 - Now we can't speak

27:16 - with a border part.

27:19 - Now we can't even get

27:20 - supplies to the army.

27:22 - Which is

27:22 - his hedges base of

27:23 - supply as at Frederick.

27:26 - And so.

27:28 - Can you imagine

27:28 - this here's a guy

27:29 - who's just been named commander.

27:32 - And.

27:33 - Suddenly he's totally

27:34 - out of touch with

27:35 - the war department

27:36 - he can't talk to him

27:37 - except by.

27:38 - Of

27:38 - almost pony express riders

27:40 - that they that the Adams.

27:42 - Express company sets up for him.

27:45 - And.

27:47 - He can't get supplies it.

27:50 - And by the way

27:51 - one half

27:52 - of that army.

27:54 - At that moment.

27:55 - Is

27:56 - shoeless.

27:58 - The army of the potomac.

28:00 - And it's just think

28:01 - about it they've

28:01 - they've marched they

28:02 - fought a battle and

28:03 - chancellorsville they've

28:05 - marched all across all up

28:06 - through Virginia

28:07 - crossed the potomac

28:08 - river into Maryland.

28:10 - And these this is hard marching.

28:13 - And.

28:14 - Those shoes were out.

28:15 - Those socks were out.

28:18 - And.

28:18 - There's.

28:19 - Almost half of them are shoes.

28:21 - And he can't get anything and

28:23 - and this is going to plague me.

28:25 - I mean throughout

28:26 - the entire campaign.

28:27 - Is getting enough.

28:29 - Supplies and food and fodder.

28:33 - To his army

28:34 - that's necessary

28:36 - for it simply to move.

28:38 - And.

28:39 - He will plan an

28:40 - operation nevertheless

28:42 - that will take that army north.

28:45 - He is advised by the president

28:47 - that he wants and and hallock.

28:49 - That they want to make sure he

28:51 - protects Washington

28:52 - and Baltimore.

28:54 - And.

28:55 - So as he looks at that map

28:57 - he's these big pipe creek.

29:01 - He also sees what I refer

29:02 - to as the turnpike access the

29:05 - chambersburg.

29:07 - To York pike that

29:08 - runs through gettysburg

29:10 - and it seems as though the

29:12 - enemy is either on

29:13 - or along that pike.

29:15 - So he directs his

29:17 - army toward that

29:19 - but to a position

29:20 - that the army could

29:21 - defend against mead

29:23 - or Lee moving towards

29:24 - Baltimore or Washington.

29:28 - Do you mind if I show a map.

29:32 - If you would bring

29:33 - up map five point one.

34:28 - And I was in the eleventh corps

34:30 - papers and I pulled

34:45 - And when I opened it up.

34:47 - There were all these dispatches.

34:56 - his signal station on

34:58 - character knob

34:59 - behind emmetsburg.

35:01 - There were.

35:03 - Copies of dispatches

35:05 - he wrote to George made.

35:08 - And then there was this letter

35:10 - from George made to rentals.

35:13 - What's interesting

35:14 - about this particular

35:15 - letter is that it

35:16 - is entirely in the

35:17 - handwriting of George made.

35:20 - So made himself

35:21 - sat down at the tent.

35:22 - In his tent and

35:23 - and compose this letter himself

35:26 - and he tells

35:27 - rentals.

35:28 - That he wants to.

35:30 - He wants him to move.

35:32 - To gettysburg

35:33 - but not

35:34 - using gettysburg as a quote

35:36 - defensive point.

35:40 - Rather.

35:41 - If the enemy collects

35:42 - in front of you.

35:46 - Then I want you

35:48 - to report that to me.

35:51 - And keep reports coming to me

35:53 - but withdraw.

35:55 - And withdraw to.

35:57 - Emmetsburg.

36:01 - Well that's an interesting.

36:03 - So moved to gettysburg

36:04 - get the enemy to

36:05 - collect in front of you

36:06 - but I want you then

36:07 - to withdraw back.

37:02 - And he talked about the.

37:06 - of an advanced core.

38:20 - communication of the enemy.

38:23 - Get on their

38:24 - communication launch.

38:25 - Now

38:26 - if you got if you're

38:27 - on the middle of

38:27 - their communication

38:28 - lines you think you're

38:29 - going to collect in front of you

38:30 - and they darn right they will.

38:32 - And what is that

38:33 - communication line.

38:34 - Lets the chambersburg pike.

38:36 - Get on that because that's where

38:38 - all the elements

38:38 - are east and west.

38:40 - You get on and in between.

38:42 - Hills corp here

38:43 - annuals over here

38:44 - you bet they're going

38:45 - to collect in front of you.

38:47 - And the object is to force that

38:49 - and then begin

38:50 - your reports back.

38:51 - There.

38:52 - Where they're

38:53 - collecting in front of me.

38:55 - they're starting to

38:56 - collect in large numbers

39:38 - The twelfth corps slocum

39:40 - has moved to two taverns.

39:43 - They're both

39:44 - north of the pipe creek line.

39:47 - And up their purposes

39:48 - the same thing.

39:50 - It's to mask

39:51 - the pipe creek line

39:52 - and to get the enemy

39:53 - to collect in front of them.

39:56 - But they need felt

39:57 - that rentals is the most.

40:00 - Vulnerable because

40:01 - that is where the heavy

40:03 - concentrations of the

40:04 - enemy appeared to be.

40:07 - So that's why he spent so

40:08 - much time on the rentals.

40:10 - Deal.

40:12 - And so.

40:14 - That is the mission.

40:16 - And what happens in

40:17 - a nutshell is that rentals.

40:20 - Proceeds but he proceeds

40:21 - first with only one division.

40:24 - He leaves the others other to.

40:26 - More than an hour behind him.

40:29 - And as he gets to

40:30 - gettysburg he finds

40:31 - the John buford is

40:32 - somehow locked in some

40:33 - combat with.

40:35 - Enemy forces.

40:37 - Turns out to be Harry hates.

40:39 - Why buford gets

40:41 - himself in that position.

40:43 - Is another for another book.

40:46 - But nevertheless he's

40:47 - asked to come to buf.

40:49 - If he does with one division.

40:53 - And as he gets

40:54 - there of course you're

40:55 - coming down from the

40:56 - north hills coming from

40:57 - the west.

40:59 - He sets up his tries to set his

41:02 - regiments in place

41:03 - brigades in place.

41:05 - Or he's shot down

41:06 - and killed probably

41:07 - by some volley from the enemy.

41:11 - And.

41:12 - We all know the risk.

41:14 - And by the end of

41:15 - the day he and his.

41:18 - The reserve of

41:19 - the eleventh corps.

41:21 - Which comes up.

41:22 - Later

41:23 - are

41:24 - fundamentally.

41:27 - Crushed.

41:28 - And fall back to.

41:30 - The cemetery hill and cups hill.

41:32 - It can.

41:33 - Go quickly back to

41:34 - to John Reynolds and.

41:36 - Certainly I i'm.

41:37 - Always reluctant to play

41:38 - armchair general and.

41:41 - And to create tiki man who's

41:42 - given his life for his country

41:44 - but

41:44 - it seems to me that.

41:48 - Your analysis

41:49 - of Reynolds.

41:51 - Is certainly more

41:52 - complicated than

41:52 - what we've seen

41:53 - before so could you

41:54 - talk a little bit

41:55 - about his decision making

41:56 - metals decision making before

41:59 - his life has taken

42:00 - early in the day

42:00 - of July the first.

42:02 - I I refer to Reynolds as

42:04 - a consummate soldier

42:05 - and I think he was a

42:07 - key the consummate

42:08 - soldier.

42:09 - There is no person

42:10 - I think you look at

42:11 - his photograph you

42:12 - can say this guy loves

42:13 - doing what he does.

42:16 - And he's proven to be

42:18 - a good at it.

42:19 - And.

42:22 - It just took to try to track

42:24 - his thinking on July one is

42:26 - is rather difficult.

48:54 - a sort of fire on the

48:55 - enemy attacking out

48:57 - hit our own people.

48:59 - So you have to just do what

49:03 - incredible crisis

49:04 - thrown at this man.

49:05 - And so he.

49:07 - Directs the fifth corps to send

49:08 - everything it's got.

49:12 - Enter the Wakefield

49:13 - and hopefully it

49:14 - would just disrupt.

49:16 - As much of that attack as he can

49:18 - and then mead would address

49:20 - the flanks of that attack.

49:22 - Whenever they appear.

49:23 - That's it that's all he's got.

53:34 - I just don't like the

53:35 - company the man keeps.

53:40 - They're not the type

53:41 - of people I would

53:42 - put confidence in

53:43 - he says that to US why.

53:45 - So.

53:46 - Apart from sickles

53:47 - now all the other.

53:49 - Corps commanders in the army

53:50 - he had enormous confidence in.

53:53 - And.

53:54 - Kind of

53:55 - had fought the war with them.

53:58 - All the way

53:58 - up to this point in time

54:00 - so he knew them well.

54:03 - I.

54:05 - A different question

54:06 - do you feel that

54:07 - Lincoln's past negative

54:08 - experiences with

54:09 - mcclellan might have

54:11 - impacted

54:12 - his assessment of

54:13 - meat after the battle.

54:15 - Or what I undoubtedly

54:17 - had been putting up

54:18 - with an army that had.

54:22 - Mcclellan had what

54:23 - Lincoln would have

54:24 - referred to as the slows.

57:37 - in it and got the two guys to

57:39 - shake hands and kind of

57:41 - make up and meet apologized.

57:48 - criticize George

57:49 - me if I wanted to.

57:51 - no but he said you know
