00:43 - Punxsutawney Weather

00:45 - Discovery Center.

00:46 - My name is Jim Cassidy.

00:48 - I'm chairman of the board here.

00:50 - We are a non-profit

00:51 - organization.

00:52 - And what the Weather

00:54 - Discovery Center is is a

00:56 - interactive learning and

00:58 - fun center for mostly for

01:01 - youth.

01:02 - But it's open for everybody

01:03 - to learn about meteorology

01:05 - and natural sciences and

01:07 - have some fun doing it.

01:10 - You're gonna get to see a

01:11 - lot of our exhibits here

01:12 - later.

01:13 - I'm just going to tell you

01:14 - a little bit about who we

01:16 - are again.

01:18 - We're a nonprofit.

01:19 - We started this project

01:21 - back in the late 90s.

01:24 - This place became open full

01:26 - time officially in 2006.

01:28 - That's when we first were

01:30 - able to put on a staff

01:31 - which we now have

01:32 - and we've expanded.

01:35 - Prior to that we were open

01:36 - sporadically for short

01:38 - periods. And the building

01:39 - we're standing in is a lot

01:41 - of the story and I hope you

01:43 - see how beautiful this old

01:45 - building is.

01:45 - This is well over 100 years old.

01:48 - It was built in 1914.

01:50 - It is on the National

01:51 - Register of Historic

01:52 - Places.

01:53 - And that is part of

01:54 - what we do here.

01:55 - We are caretakers for

01:56 - this great old building.

01:58 - And because we're the

01:59 - weather capital of the

02:01 - world we have our weather

02:02 - forecast the groundhog.

02:04 - That was the idea of turning

02:05 - this into a weather

02:06 - center or a fun center for

02:08 - kids that ties in with our

02:09 - world famous groundhog.

02:11 - One of the other things we

02:12 - have here and it's right

02:13 - here in our lobby is the

02:15 - meteorologist Hall of Fame

02:18 - national meteorologist

02:19 - Hall of Fame.

02:19 - We induct a new person

02:21 - into that every year every

02:22 - Groundhog Day we'll be

02:23 - doing that here in a few

02:25 - weeks. The post office is

02:28 - a fantastic old building.

02:31 - They don't build buildings

02:32 - like this anymore and

02:33 - people are sometimes in awe

02:35 - of it when they come here.

02:36 - I think you will be maybe

02:38 - surprised as most visitors

02:40 - are by our exhibits that

02:42 - you see most of those are

02:45 - done designed by companies

02:47 - that do work for Disney for

02:49 - Carnegie Science Center.

02:51 - So the art I want to point

02:52 - that out our exhibits and

02:53 - everything we have were

02:54 - not done by us here in

02:55 - Punxsutawney. They're done

02:56 - by real professionals.

02:58 - And we have that.

03:06 - and also scouting groups a

03:09 - lot.

03:19 - for all kind of ages in

03:20 - everything that has to

03:21 - do with meteorology and

03:23 - natural sciences.

03:41 - And we're very happy to

03:43 - have you today to have a

03:44 - tour of what we offer right

03:46 - here at the entrance to our

03:48 - exhibit hall.

03:49 - We have two exhibits we

03:50 - have the precipitation

03:52 - puzzler which these girls

03:54 - are working on right now

03:55 - and it is quite a puzzler.

03:58 - It teaches about different

04:00 - forms of precipitation and

04:02 - you have 60 seconds to make

04:04 - the puzzles that have to do

04:06 - with precipitation.

04:07 - And it's a little bit

04:08 - tough isn't it girls?

04:11 - All right.

04:11 - And over that way we have

04:13 - our frozen raindrop that

04:16 - deals with the winter

04:17 - types of precipitation.

04:19 - And we have a couple of

04:21 - students there who are

04:22 - enjoying watching the rain

04:24 - stream of rain freeze in

04:27 - place and even go backwards

04:30 - you are now in the weather

04:33 - law landscape this section

04:34 - of the Weather Discovery

04:36 - Center is all about weather folklore.

04:39 - The things that

04:40 - your grandparents and your

04:41 - great grandparents used to

04:43 - tell you about the weather

04:45 - such as red sky at night

04:47 - sailor's delight, the cows

04:49 - will lie down before rain.

04:53 - All of those sayings you

04:54 - can explore whether they

04:56 - are true or not.

04:57 - In this section and we even

05:00 - have a special area devoted

05:02 - to our own Punxsutawney

05:04 - Phil and groundhogs and to

05:06 - his legend.

05:07 - So in this area it's

05:09 - all interactive.

05:10 - You try things on, you open

05:12 - drawers, you turn knobs.

05:14 - All that kind of thing and

05:16 - it's a great area for kids

05:18 - to learn about the past and

05:19 - the way that people used to

05:21 - tell the weather before

05:22 - computers and satellites.

05:25 - Probably our most popular

05:27 - exhibit is the twist and

05:29 - shout which teaches how

05:30 - tornadoes form up in the

05:32 - sky as a cloud and drops

05:34 - down that tail to become a

05:36 - funnel cloud.

05:37 - And the kids what actually

05:39 - happens is they crawl up

05:40 - the slide.

05:41 - The wind blows, you hear the

05:43 - roar of the tornado and

05:45 - they swirl down and destroy

05:47 - the building that's at the

05:48 - bottom and just have a lot

05:50 - of fun while they're doing

05:51 - it.

05:52 - We also have a weather map

05:54 - where you can pretend that

05:56 - you're a meteorologist and

05:58 - line up the fronts and the

06:00 - cold fronts the clouds the

06:01 - sun whatever the weather

06:03 - might be.

06:04 - Also in this area we have a

06:06 - van de Graaf generator if

06:07 - you remember those

06:08 - from science class.

06:10 - We like to call it our

06:11 - lightning mission if US

06:13 - makes a spark between the

06:15 - two spheres and can really

06:17 - raise your hair.

06:21 - We're happy to announce

06:23 - that coming soon in 2020 we

06:25 - will have a new exhibit.

06:26 - It's called pull up clouds.

06:28 - It'll be in this area and

06:30 - it will teach children

06:32 - about the different

06:32 - types of clouds.

06:33 - They'll be a little bit of

06:34 - physical activity in that

06:36 - they're going to have to

06:37 - pull clouds to raise them

06:38 - into the sky or into the

06:40 - air and that way they'll

06:42 - get a little bit of

06:43 - interaction and they'll

06:44 - also be learning at the

06:46 - same time we are standing

06:48 - inside one of three vaults

06:49 - that we have in our

06:51 - historic former post office

06:53 - building and we turn this

06:54 - into a weather emergency

06:56 - shelter aptly because it's

06:59 - a big strong area in the

07:00 - middle of our building.

07:02 - And in here we have several

07:03 - Interactive is all about

07:05 - being ready in the event of

07:07 - a weather emergency because

07:09 - we have this exhibit.

07:10 - We are part of Noah's

07:12 - weather ready Ambassador

07:14 - team and we're very

07:15 - happy to do that.

07:16 - Very happy to do our part.

07:18 - Teaching children and

07:19 - adults all about being

07:20 - prepared in the event

07:22 - of a weather emergency.

07:25 - We have here our second

07:26 - most popular exhibit the

07:28 - active weather forecasting

07:30 - station featuring our green

07:33 - screen.

07:34 - Here we have some young TV

07:37 - meteorologists giving us

07:39 - the weather and it's your

07:41 - opportunity to see what

07:42 - it's like to be a TV

07:44 - weather person or maybe a

07:48 - group of TV weather people.

07:49 - I should say and then over

07:51 - here we have our Weather

07:53 - Wizard in this area.

07:56 - Children can learn and

07:57 - adults can learn about the

07:59 - seasons and different parts

08:00 - of the country what they're

08:01 - like in the summer and the

08:03 - winter in the fall and also

08:06 - answer some of our

08:06 - challenge questions to see

08:08 - how much you truly do

08:09 - know about the weather.

08:12 - We are inside the perfect storm.

08:15 - We have everything you

08:16 - need here to make a

08:17 - thunderstorm.

08:18 - We have a downdraft.

08:20 - We have an updraft.

08:21 - We have lightning and

08:23 - we have thunder.

08:25 - We even have rain.

08:26 - But I like to say it's the

08:27 - dry variety so you don't

08:28 - get soaking wet but

08:30 - everything you need here to

08:31 - build your own thunderstorm

08:33 - and this is a great

08:34 - activity for families

08:35 - school groups even one

08:37 - person can do it.

08:38 - If they do a lot of extra

08:40 - work one of the things

08:42 - that's really important for

08:44 - our school field trips is

08:46 - having an exhibit about the

08:48 - water cycle because oh

08:50 - around about third or

08:51 - fourth grade most students

08:52 - will learn about the water

08:53 - cycle and everyone knows

08:55 - how important that is for

08:56 - our environment and for

08:58 - life in general.

08:59 - So we're happy to have this

09:00 - exhibit where children and

09:02 - adults can both see where

09:03 - the rain falls when it

09:05 - comes to the earth and of

09:07 - course what happens after

09:09 - it's on our planet.

09:13 - We also have tucked back

09:14 - in a corner of the Weather

09:16 - Discovery Center.

09:17 - Our extreme weather theater.

09:21 - This is a place where we

09:22 - are able to show weather

09:23 - features such as the

09:24 - one these children are

09:26 - watching.

09:26 - We also have a smart board

09:28 - that we use to do a lot of

09:30 - interactive programming.

09:32 - When we have our special

09:33 - programs dealing with

09:34 - different weather topics

09:36 - here at the Weather

09:37 - Discovery Center education

09:39 - is a large part of our

09:40 - mission as well as

09:41 - entertainment in our

09:42 - classroom area.

09:44 - We host programming

09:45 - throughout the year about

09:47 - weather science and we also

09:49 - do Boy Scout merit badges

09:51 - and Girl Scout journeys.

09:53 - So in our classroom we have

09:54 - the children do activities

09:56 - experiments crafts anything

09:58 - that we can do to help them

10:01 - learn about the science of

10:03 - weather of course a visit

10:06 - to the Punxsutawney Weather

10:07 - Discovery Center isn't

10:08 - complete until you've

10:09 - stopped in our gift shop.

10:11 - Here we have a variety of

10:12 - weather and nature related

10:14 - toys and gifts.

10:16 - And of course we have our
