00:50 - in Lehigh County.

00:51 - Until the mid 19th century,

00:53 - Emmaus was a closed community

00:54 - and was a center of silk and

00:55 - cigar manufacturing.

00:57 - Today this historic community is

00:58 - recognized as one of the best

00:59 - small towns in America.

01:13 - Hello. Welcome to the borough of

01:15 - Emmaus.

01:16 - I am Mayor Lee Ann Gilbert.

01:18 - I've been involved in the

01:19 - borough for the last 18 years.

01:21 - For six years, I served as the

01:23 - first female president of

01:24 - Borough Council and now recently

01:26 - elected to the position of

01:28 - mayor, which I'm honored to

01:30 - hold.

01:31 - Emmaus is located along the

01:32 - northern slope of the South

01:34 - Mountain. We're roughly two

01:36 - miles in size with approximately

01:38 - 12,000 residents. We're located

01:40 - 50 miles north of Philadelphia.

01:44 - On two separate occasions we

01:45 - were voted the top 100 places to

01:47 - live in the United States by

01:50 - Money magazine, a recognition we

01:52 - are extremely proud of.

01:54 - We offer a full range of

01:55 - services for our residents.

01:57 - We have a state accredited

01:59 - police department with 20 full

02:01 - time officers.

02:02 - We have an advanced life support

02:03 - ambulance corps staffed with

02:05 - paramedics and emergency medical

02:08 - technicians.

02:09 - We also have our very own fire

02:10 - department staffed by part time

02:12 - employees and volunteers.

02:15 - Among emergency services, we

02:17 - have a fully staffed public

02:19 - works department who is

02:21 - responsible for the maintenance

02:23 - of our infrastructures.

02:25 - On Sundays you can attend any

02:27 - number of places of worship and

02:29 - then go shopping at the best

02:30 - outdoor farmer's market in the

02:31 - area.

02:32 - People come from all over to

02:34 - shop at our farmers market and I

02:35 - believe this year they will be

02:37 - celebrating their 15th year.

02:39 - During the year you can attend

02:41 - any number of events and

02:42 - activities taking place

02:43 - throughout the borough during

02:45 - the summer months.

02:45 - You can attend a free concert at

02:47 - our community park.

02:49 - Go swimming in our beautifully

02:50 - maintained swimming pool.

02:52 - Or just spend a relaxing day

02:53 - with your family at any one of

02:55 - our parks.

02:57 - We have a number of restaurants

02:59 - and specialty shops throughout

03:00 - the borough.

03:01 - You can go shopping, have

03:03 - dinner, and go to our local

03:05 - movie theater where, depending

03:06 - on the night, a movie ticket

03:08 - will cost you four dollars.

03:18 - Hello. I'm Dr. Mike Waddell.

03:20 - I've served on many boards and

03:21 - commissions here in the bureau

03:22 - of Emmaus over the last 30

03:23 - years.

03:24 - I'm particularly proud that I

03:25 - was able to serve on borough

03:26 - council for eight years.

03:29 - I'm currently the president of

03:30 - the Emmaus Arts Commission and I

03:32 - also serve as the executive

03:33 - director of the Emmaus

03:34 - Commemorative Gardens

03:35 - Foundation.

03:36 - Here we're standing in the foyer

03:38 - of the Emmaus historical society

03:40 - museum.

03:41 - The museum is a wonderful asset

03:43 - for us here in the community.

03:45 - It was purchased from the Barto

03:46 - family and in 2014 and opened

03:49 - its doors as a museum in

03:50 - September of 2015.

03:52 - Thanks to the volunteerism of

03:55 - thousands of hours of

03:56 - volunteers. Everyone has worked

03:59 - so hard to make this a great

04:00 - asset for us. There is actually

04:02 - 18 displays here.

04:04 - They actually house about 25 to

04:06 - 30 thousand artifacts from the

04:09 - Borough of Emmaus including

04:10 - about 10,000 photographs.

04:13 - We have a wonderful public

04:14 - library.

04:15 - It's actually going to add an

04:16 - addition, a children's wing in

04:18 - 2019. We have the Wildlands

04:21 - Conservancy on the north side of

04:22 - town that is dedicated to

04:24 - preserving open space here in

04:25 - the Lehigh Valley and also the

04:27 - Emmaus Remembrance Garden on the

04:29 - east side of town where we have

04:30 - over 600 engraved bricks for

04:32 - families, service clubs,

04:35 - community heroes, and so on.

04:37 - Probably the biggest group that

04:38 - we have there of engraved bricks

04:40 - are veterans and we've placed

04:42 - over 300 bricks for veterans

04:44 - over the last 12 years.

04:46 - And we do it every Memorial Day

04:47 - weekend where we install a good

04:49 - 20 to 30 bricks each year.

04:51 - The history of Emmaus is a

04:53 - fascinating history and it

04:54 - begins with the Moravians moving

04:56 - into this area in the 1700s.

05:00 - And it became a founded Moravian

05:01 - community in 1759.

05:04 - It became a borough in 1859,

05:06 - which gives us over 250 years of

05:09 - persons living in this area.

05:11 - When you have so much history in

05:12 - a town, you're certainly want an

05:14 - organization that's going to

05:15 - look after that and promote and

05:17 - tell the story of that history.

05:19 - In Emmaus that's the Emmaus

05:20 - Heritage Alliance.

05:22 - The Heritage Alliance has worked

05:23 - very hard with volunteers from

05:25 - the eight major groups in the

05:27 - area to promote the history that

05:29 - we have here in our community.

05:31 - Last year we had our first

05:32 - Heritage Festival, which

05:34 - attracted hundreds of people to

05:35 - learn the story of the Borough

05:37 - of Emmaus. The East Penn School

05:39 - District.

05:39 - It also has a wonderful

05:40 - reputation in the state of

05:42 - Pennsylvania for a strong

05:43 - academic program and the

05:45 - graduating class is typically

05:48 - about 80 some percent, about 81,

05:50 - 82 percent of those students go

05:52 - on to two year, four year

05:54 - schools, or go into the

05:55 - military.

05:56 - Hi. I'm Meghan Reed.

05:58 - I'm the Emmaus main street

05:59 - manager.

05:59 - I'm also the assistant V.P. of

06:02 - the East Penn chamber and

06:03 - Western Lehigh Chambers of

06:04 - Commerce.

06:05 - I'm a native to the East Penn

06:06 - area.

06:06 - Growing up in Emmaus and the

06:08 - surrounding neighborhoods, a

06:09 - graduate of Emmaus High School

06:11 - and I love our town with a

06:12 - passion.

06:14 - Like other towns in

06:15 - Pennsylvania, Emmaus is made up

06:17 - with mostly small businesses,

06:20 - which really brings a uniqueness

06:22 - to our charming streetscape.

06:24 - You can find businesses that

06:25 - range from Salon and Spa

06:27 - services to more niche markets

06:30 - such as your running stores or

06:33 - paint stores, wallpaper stores.

06:35 - We really have something for

06:36 - everyone here.

06:37 - Even breweries and distilleries.

06:38 - We've actually become quite a

06:39 - hub for our brewing and

06:40 - distillery industries, which

06:42 - makes us pretty fun to hang out

06:44 - with.

06:45 - We encourage you to come out to

06:46 - Emmaus and spend the day or

06:47 - spend a weekend visiting our

06:48 - many shops or come to one of our

06:50 - events that we host down here at

06:51 - the Emmaus triangle park such as

06:53 - Farewell to Summer Festival, our

06:54 - old fashioned tree lighting and

06:57 - community event.

06:58 - We also host a variety of events

07:00 - throughout the town at our

07:01 - community park. A summer concert

07:02 - series.

07:03 - So I want to introduce you to

07:04 - our friend Emma the mule.

07:06 - Emma the mule is kind of our

07:07 - town's mascot.

07:09 - She was a part of the Miles of

07:11 - Mules initiative through the

07:13 - state of Pennsylvania and you'll

07:15 - see mules through other towns in

07:17 - the state.

07:18 - So community members came

07:19 - together in the early 90s and

07:20 - purchased Emma the Mule and did

07:22 - a custom paint job of this

07:24 - beautiful quilted pattern, which

07:25 - really kind of signifies our

07:27 - Pennsylvania Dutch history here

07:29 - in Emmaus, P.A. And what we did

07:30 - is invited the community to

07:32 - really be a part of Emma.

07:33 - And so businesses and different

07:35 - families of the community have

07:37 - been invited to come out and

07:38 - paint their names across a

07:41 - pattern here and you'll notice

07:43 - that the Emmaus has a lot of

07:44 - triangles in the community.

07:45 - Triangle Park.

07:46 - There's another Triangle park so

07:48 - we're kind of into triangles.

07:49 - We're not square around here.

08:05 - Hi. My name is Wesley Barrett.

08:07 - I'm the owner of Wesley Works

08:09 - Real Estate.

08:10 - I've also served on the borough

08:11 - council for the last 12 years.

08:14 - Right now you're in our office.

08:16 - It's a Queen Anne Victorian

08:18 - building, which was built in

08:20 - 1893. It's a unique building, a

08:23 - building that many people in

08:24 - town know for a few reasons.

08:25 - The original owner, the builder

08:27 - was a doctor and it was a family

08:29 - doctor and so many people have

08:30 - passed right through this

08:31 - doorway to go to the doctor,

08:34 - which is really neat.

08:35 - So some of your oldest residents

08:36 - in town knew all about it.

08:39 - We've also had some unique

08:40 - guests. Amelia Earhart actually

08:41 - stayed in this building and

08:44 - we've had presidential

08:45 - candidates stay in this

08:46 - building.

08:46 - So a lot of history here.

08:48 - Just like the rest of our town

08:49 - there's a lot of history.

08:50 - By all means our residents would

08:53 - describe our town as a small

08:54 - town.

08:54 - However, we do have about 12,000

08:57 - residents, which makes it the

08:59 - largest borough in the Lehigh

09:00 - Valley, but also one of the

09:01 - larger in the state of

09:02 - Pennsylvania.

09:04 - But at the same time our

09:05 - residents have lived here for a

09:06 - very long time, are passionate

09:08 - about everything that goes on in

09:09 - town.

09:11 - We also have a number of people,

09:14 - a significant number of people

09:15 - who not only live here, but they

09:17 - work here, which is great from a

09:19 - quality of life standpoint.

09:20 - People really enjoy the fact

09:21 - that they can ride their bike to

09:23 - work.

09:24 - They can walk to work on a nice

09:26 - morning like today was.

09:28 - You'll see people in their work

09:30 - attire riding their bike to

09:31 - work.

09:32 - They've got their helmet on and

09:32 - all of that, which is a really

09:34 - neat thing to see when you're on

09:35 - your daily commute.

09:37 - It's also from a quality of life

09:39 - standpoint. Really nice that

09:40 - your car might have about 400

09:42 - miles on it an entire year of

09:43 - your commuting.

09:45 - If you forget something, you

09:46 - quick run home. It's a nice

09:49 - element. Many people move to

09:52 - Emmaus, they assume it's going

09:54 - to be their starter home.

09:55 - The housing market has plenty of

09:58 - affordable housing right now on

09:59 - the market. Ranges from about a

10:01 - hundred and forty five thousand

10:02 - to upwards of about four hundred

10:04 - and ninety five thousand.

10:06 - With the sweet spot being right

10:07 - around 200,000 so it makes for a

10:09 - great starter home as a lot of

10:10 - people would call it.

10:12 - But the unique thing is it

10:13 - doesn't always end up being a

10:14 - starter home.

10:14 - People like the town so much

10:15 - that they want to stay here.

10:17 - And the average right now in the

10:19 - United States is about 7 to 10

10:21 - years that someone stays in the

10:22 - house.

10:23 - We see people staying

10:23 - significantly longer than that,

10:26 - which is just a testament to the

10:27 - type of town that we have, the

10:28 - community they have.

10:30 - It's a place where everyone

10:31 - knows their neighbor and they

10:33 - know their neighbor because

10:33 - they've lived there for a long

10:34 - time and have made friends and

10:36 - it makes them want to stay. Part

10:38 - of living in a town means that

10:40 - you get to enjoy walkability,

10:43 - but you get to know your

10:44 - neighbors.

10:45 - You could walk to work.

10:46 - You get to walk to your downtown

10:47 - shops and in doing all of that

10:50 - it becomes part of the

10:51 - community.

10:51 - So you get to know people

10:53 - instead of everyone going out to

10:55 - the driveway, driving to their

10:56 - car.

10:57 - And that's the only time that

10:58 - you see them.

10:58 - You actually see them as they

10:59 - walk past your house.

11:00 - You may strike up a conversation

11:02 - on a nice day, which is a really

11:04 - unique peace.

11:05 - We also have an amazing trail

11:06 - system.

11:07 - We have wonderful parks, which

11:08 - if you're raising a family

11:10 - you'll know you want to get them

11:12 - out of the house and into some

11:13 - of our parks. And our parks

11:14 - aren't just in one spot.

11:16 - They're centrally located around

11:17 - the entire town.

11:18 - We have a number of pocket

11:19 - parks.

11:20 - We have a wonderful community

11:21 - park with a pool, a very large

11:23 - pool.

11:24 - And when you have all those

11:26 - pieces together, you have a

11:28 - culture of people that enjoy

11:30 - being outside.

11:31 - They have a healthy lifestyle.

11:33 - We are able to use our local

11:35 - high school's track.

11:37 - So if you want a more controlled

11:38 - environment or you can use South

11:40 - Mountain, which is a beautiful

11:42 - area marked with trails that

11:44 - have some steep inclines or if

11:46 - you just want something that

11:47 - kind of takes you through over

11:48 - some little babbling streams,

11:50 - it's a really unique spot.

11:52 - So if being a top 100 place to

11:54 - live, having lots of parks,

11:56 - having lots of trail systems,

11:58 - having a central location to New

12:00 - York City or Philadelphia wasn't

12:01 - enough.

12:02 - Maybe you need to actually see

12:03 - some of our houses.

12:08 - Hi, my name is Kirsten Hess and

12:10 - I am the owner of Let's Play

12:12 - Books bookstore located in

12:14 - Emmaus, Pennsylvania and in 2013

12:17 - I relocated here from

12:19 - Connecticut.

12:20 - And I said I have to have my own

12:21 - bookstore.

12:22 - I just have to.

12:23 - And I was driving down the

12:24 - street and a little shop on the

12:26 - corner was for rent and it was

12:28 - the most perfect place in the

12:30 - world for a children's

12:31 - bookstore.

12:32 - It screamed it. Because of the

12:35 - other people in Emmaus, mostly

12:38 - small business owners.

12:39 - The market that's in town on

12:41 - Sunday.

12:42 - There were people everywhere

12:44 - that were able to help me right

12:46 - away.

12:47 - And probably by January or

12:50 - February of 2014, we had already

12:53 - collaborated with five or six

12:55 - other small businesses in town

12:57 - and then when you add the arts

12:59 - community to what we're already

13:01 - trying to do as a unique

13:03 - standalone business, it's

13:05 - exceptional. For instance we

13:06 - have a stairway that goes to the

13:09 - attic that we had community

13:12 - members actually donate a step.

13:15 - So each family would would

13:17 - purchase a step as part of the

13:18 - donation and then each step

13:21 - looks like a book.

13:22 - And instead of the author being

13:24 - on the step, the family that

13:26 - donated the step is listed as

13:29 - the author.

13:29 - So it's kind of this wonderful

13:31 - way to tie in people that care

13:34 - about us being here, which

13:36 - really makes it a place that you

13:38 - want to come to work and you

13:39 - want to figure out how to make

13:40 - it work.

13:41 - We also have two bookstore cats

13:44 - and we asked our community

13:46 - members again find a kitty that

13:50 - is the perfect quintessential

13:52 - bookstore cat and one of our

13:54 - favorite people in the world

13:55 - came and found Garfield. And

13:57 - Garfield is the perfect cat to

14:00 - be here.

14:02 - Even though he has claws he just

14:03 - hangs out and the kids come and

14:05 - pet him all the time and they

14:07 - read to him.

14:08 - But since he was going to live

14:10 - in the bookstore we felt like we

14:12 - had to get a second cat so he

14:14 - wouldn't be alone.

14:14 - So we also got Bernie and they

14:17 - each have their own Instagram

14:19 - accounts and the kids come in

14:20 - and see the kitties.

14:22 - And if that helps them engage in

14:26 - reading a book, that's what we

14:28 - want.

14:28 - And so the cats add a little bit

14:30 - of whimsy and I think that that

14:33 - adds a little bit of special

14:35 - happiness.

14:36 - Anyway, thank you so much for

14:45 - in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. Jaboa

14:47 - Enterprise is an installation

14:49 - company.

14:50 - We work with manufacturers to

14:51 - install specialty retail

14:53 - displays nationwide.

14:55 - We work with a lot of

14:55 - manufacturers in Asia, Europe,

14:58 - and even here in eastern

14:59 - Pennsylvania.

15:00 - Three years ago we saw an

15:01 - opportunity to start producing

15:03 - custom signs, graphics, and

15:06 - custom apparel for our

15:07 - customers.

15:08 - So we opened our second company.

15:10 - We chose Emmaus as our

15:12 - headquarters for our company

15:13 - because it had that small town

15:15 - feel that we had grown up with

15:17 - as lifetime residents of the

15:19 - Lehigh Valley, but it gave us

15:20 - very easy access to the major

15:22 - markets like Philadelphia and

15:23 - New York where we complete a lot

15:25 - of projects.

15:26 - Growing up in the Lehigh Valley.

15:27 - It was very obvious how

15:29 - important manufacturing was to

15:30 - the valley and although things

15:32 - have changed a lot.

15:33 - There is still a lot of

15:34 - opportunity for manufacturers in

15:36 - this specialized categories.

15:38 - We've found a lot of partners in

15:39 - the Lehigh Valley that help

15:41 - create and produce the displays

15:43 - that are attractive to our

15:44 - customers and that helps us

15:46 - build in the community we live

15:47 - in and still work nationally.

15:50 - Jaboa Enterprises is in its 18th

15:52 - year.

15:53 - We do everything from installing

15:55 - customer service counters to

15:57 - custom showcases or interior

16:00 - signage inside of stores.

16:02 - Vinyl Press manufactures those

16:05 - wayfinding signs inside of

16:06 - retail stores and exterior sign

16:09 - fronts here in our local

16:10 - community. We're part of the

16:12 - Emmaus Mainstreet Program, which

16:14 - is our chapter of the local

16:15 - chamber of commerce and we try

16:17 - to be very involved with that

16:18 - and work with other small

16:19 - businesses.

16:21 - As a local company with a

16:22 - national footprint it's exciting

16:24 - to have more customers in our

16:26 - local communities that we can

16:28 - see our projects when they're

16:29 - completed and we can enjoy their

16:31 - success.

16:42 - I'm an artist for Marvel and DC

16:43 - Comics. Cocreator of a team of

16:47 - superheroes called The New

16:48 - Mutants with the writer Chris

16:49 - Clairemont. Created him way back

16:52 - in the 1980s and come to find

16:54 - out they is actually going to be

16:55 - a live action movie.

16:57 - So I'm very excited about that.

16:59 - I moved up to Emmaus with my

17:01 - family in 1989 from Tampa,

17:04 - Florida.

17:05 - So we heard about Emmaus after

17:08 - the Interstate 78 had opened up

17:10 - and I wanted to be able to drive

17:12 - into New York because of my job.

17:14 - Marvel Comics was based in New

17:16 - York, so was DC Comics. Heard

17:18 - that it was a nice little town

17:20 - and we wanted a place to raise a

17:21 - family.

17:23 - So it was a great kind of center

17:24 - location for getting to all

17:26 - these cultural meccas that we

17:28 - wanted to go to. And then come

17:31 - to find out.

17:33 - There's all this stuff going on

17:34 - in Emmaus all the time. A big

17:37 - part of that is the Emmaus

17:38 - library where my wife has

17:40 - worked. The library has all

17:41 - these various things to offer

17:45 - like a book club, film events.

17:47 - I've given little art

17:49 - demonstrations there before.

17:51 - There's this thing right now in

17:52 - Emmaus called Emmaus Rocks where

17:54 - we have these little...

17:56 - Anybody can get one of these

17:57 - rocks and paint on it.

17:59 - And then on the back it says

18:00 - Emmaus Rocks and they kind of

18:02 - place them around Emmaus.

18:03 - A cool little thing going on

18:04 - right now.

18:05 - We have Snow Blast in the middle

18:07 - of winter.

18:08 - A lot of stuff. Ice sculpting

18:10 - and all the kinds of events.

18:13 - Live painting around snow blast.

18:18 - Another thing I like about this

18:20 - area is the local theater with

18:24 - the middle schools and the high

18:25 - schools.

18:26 - It's amazing, the talent that

18:28 - comes out of this area.

18:29 - It's really impressive.

18:31 - I would really recommend you

18:32 - check out Emmaus.

18:33 - It's a fun place.

18:34 - There's new stuff developing

18:52 - Brewing here in Emmaus.

18:54 - I'm a retired chemist.

18:55 - I retired at the beginning of

18:56 - 2014.

18:58 - After about 18 months, decided

18:59 - to open a brewery.

19:00 - I've been a home brewer for 20

19:02 - plus years off and on. Having

19:05 - homebrewed the last 10 or 12

19:07 - with my sons, one of whom joined

19:09 - me about a year ago. We've been

19:10 - open 18 months and Matt's taken

19:14 - over as the brewer and I made

19:16 - the bar here in the brewery.

19:18 - I made all the tables and we

19:21 - have a great time.

19:22 - It's a very community feel as is

19:24 - all of Emmaus.

19:25 - We're also in a borough that has

19:28 - an ordinance already in place

19:29 - for breweries and right before I

19:32 - opened they actually expanded

19:33 - that to include other craft

19:35 - beverages as we have right next

19:37 - door a distillery, Triple Sun

19:39 - Spirits. About a block away is

19:41 - Funk Brewing.

19:43 - One of our neighbors that makes

19:45 - it a destination to come here to

19:48 - Emmaus to enjoy different craft

19:50 - beverages.

19:51 - People often ask us if we have

19:53 - food available here and pretty

19:54 - much whenever we're open, we

19:55 - have food trucks come in. A

19:57 - number of those food trucks are

19:58 - actually from the local

19:59 - community including Switchback

20:01 - Pizza, which is just across the

20:03 - train tracks.

20:04 - License to Grill, that's up on

20:06 - the triangle as is David's

20:07 - Italian Deli and the Trap Door

20:09 - Gastro Pub who bring their fired

20:12 - up artisan oven here to the

20:15 - brewery and distillery. Funk

20:17 - Brewing down the street. Also

20:18 - has food trucks.

20:20 - Obviously there's a lot of

20:22 - different restaurants in the

20:24 - borough as well.

20:25 - Starting with breakfast at the

20:27 - Diner's Superior at one end, the

20:29 - Trivet at the other end.

20:32 - There's great coffee shops. The

20:33 - King Koffee right here on Main

20:35 - Street and South Mountain Cycle

20:38 - up on the Triangle who are

20:39 - obviously a great cycle shop as

20:41 - well.

20:42 - And in terms of things to do in

20:43 - the evening, there is live music

20:45 - both here and at Triple Sun

20:46 - Spirits on a fairly regular

20:48 - basis.

20:50 - A theatre in town as well.

20:52 - Emmaus Theatre's right up the

20:53 - block. They do first run and

20:55 - second run, they have kids

20:57 - movies often in the afternoon.

20:59 - They also run cult classics

21:01 - usually as BYOB.

21:03 - One of the things we do here at

21:04 - Yergey Brewing, which is to

21:05 - offer to go cups. You take your

21:07 - to go cup up to the theatre and

21:10 - they'll stamp your ticket. You

21:12 - get a dollar off the refill of

21:14 - your cup.

21:15 - In addition to live music we've

21:17 - done art shows between the three

21:20 - establishments. We currently

21:21 - have art on the wall and we

21:23 - shift that around every few

21:25 - months.

21:25 - Coming back to our own brewery

21:27 - here we have a variety of

21:29 - different beers on tap.

21:30 - Everything from IPAs and lighter

21:33 - offerings like wheat beers and

21:35 - British milds, porters and

21:38 - imperial stouts. We're actually

21:40 - going to take one of our

21:41 - imperial stouts today and put it

21:42 - in a bourbon barrel.

21:44 - We're hoping to have that on for

21:46 - American Craft Beer Week, which

21:47 - comes up in May and we're

21:51 - actually doing a collaboration

21:52 - with Funk Brewing for that same

21:54 - event.
