00:26 - Through the 1800's the town grew

00:28 - as the county prospered because

00:29 - of agriculture and timber

00:31 - pursuits.

00:32 - In the nineteen hundreds the

00:33 - economic basis for the area

00:34 - changed to major coal

00:35 - operations.

00:37 - Today the borough boasts a

00:38 - thriving downtown historic

00:39 - district.

00:40 - It is home to Indiana University

00:41 - of Pennsylvania the iconic Jimmy

00:43 - Stewart Museum.

00:44 - We hope you enjoy this tour of

00:55 - Here in Indiana we enjoy a great

00:58 - local health care, a vibrant

01:00 - downtown, and a rich historical

01:04 - 15 minutes northeast of

01:06 - Pittsburgh an hour northwest of

01:08 - Altoona, Indiana the county seat

01:11 - of Indiana County serves as the

01:13 - host municipality to the Indiana

01:16 - University of Pennsylvania IUP

01:19 - and two publicly traded

01:21 - financial institutions S&T Bank

01:23 - and first Commonwealth Bank.

01:25 - We also are proud to call

01:26 - ourselves the hometown of Jimmy

01:28 - Stewart.

01:30 - The bureau is focused on

01:31 - maintaining a clean and

01:32 - memorable place to live.

01:34 - We are proud designees of the

01:37 - Tree City USA and Playful City

01:39 - USA and we are so proud to have

01:42 - been given the award of Brines

01:44 - by Walk Friendly Communities.

01:47 - We are currently working on the

01:50 - program of sustainable

01:51 - Pennsylvania and we are close to

01:53 - having a platinum designation

01:55 - there. Although this is part of

01:57 - rural Pennsylvania Indiana

01:59 - offers much to do in the

02:01 - recreational, cultural, and

02:03 - historical arenas. Indiana

02:07 - serves as the urban center of

02:09 - Indiana County and also as the

02:11 - county seat.

02:12 - With a population of 14,000 and

02:15 - another 16,000 in White Township

02:18 - surrounding Indiana Borough,

02:20 - there is much to do here.

02:22 - We have all of the offerings of

02:24 - a small city with a very small

02:26 - town feel.

02:27 - So enjoy your visit and find out

02:30 - why this is one great place to

02:32 - live.

02:33 - Hello I'm Peter Broad, president

02:35 - of the Indiana Borough Council.

02:37 - This is our lovely council

02:39 - chambers here.

02:41 - We of course have all the usual

02:42 - social organizations the Kiwanis

02:45 - the Rotary's the Elks Boy Scouts

02:48 - Girl Scouts but we also have a

02:50 - lot of other organizations that

02:52 - contribute to the community.

02:54 - We have an active little theater

02:55 - on Philadelphia Street which is

02:57 - our main street.

02:58 - We have both an Arts Association

03:01 - and an arts council which are

03:03 - responsible for different levels

03:05 - of art exhibits and activities

03:09 - in the borough.

03:10 - Our downtown is enlivened by

03:14 - year long series of festivals

03:17 - that bring people to the

03:18 - streets.

03:19 - We're about to celebrate our

03:21 - annual It's a Wonderful Life

03:23 - Festival where we will have a 35

03:26 - foot Christmas tree donated by

03:27 - the local Christmas tree

03:29 - growers.

03:30 - There will be a parade.

03:31 - Last year we had thousands of

03:32 - people come to town for the

03:33 - parade.

03:35 - Indiana also has a very active

03:36 - religious community.

03:38 - We have we have one street

03:40 - through town called Church

03:41 - Street just outside of the

03:42 - borough.

03:43 - We even have a mosque.

03:44 - We have a small synagogue in

03:46 - town.

03:46 - This is a religious community

03:48 - and those churches contribute a

03:50 - lot during student celebrations.

03:54 - Some of the churches will serve

03:57 - hotdogs late at night so that

03:58 - people have something in their

04:00 - stomachs and neither will part.

04:02 - They will be performing

04:04 - Christmas carols in the park

04:05 - during our coming celebration.

04:07 - As you can see Indiana has

04:09 - something to offer people from

04:11 - all walks of life.

04:13 - We're a welcoming community.

04:17 - And it's a great place to live.

04:23 - We start our tour today of

04:25 - downtown Indiana in what we

04:26 - consider to be the downtown more

04:28 - historic block of Indiana where

04:31 - we've got the actually the

04:33 - second county courthouse here in

04:35 - Indiana county, built back in

04:36 - the 1800's.

04:37 - This particular part of town

04:39 - also played a major part in

04:41 - national history with many of

04:43 - the Underground Railroad safe

04:45 - houses being built in this area

04:46 - still standing today.

04:48 - One of the more famous incidents

04:49 - was the rescue of Anthony

04:51 - Hollandsworth that took place

04:52 - here on this corner and some of

04:54 - the buildings were also kind of

04:56 - look at our downtown.

04:57 - It's about a two and a half

04:59 - mile, two mile swath of about

05:01 - 250 different businesses.

05:04 - Parcels excuse me mostly 75

05:06 - percent restaurants and

05:08 - entertainment.

05:09 - Another 25 percent are also

05:11 - residential and corporate.

05:13 - So as we start here we kind of

05:14 - started the downtown what we

05:15 - like to consider which talks a

05:17 - lot which has a lot to do with a

05:18 - lot of the historical part of

05:20 - Indiana County.

05:21 - There was formed back in 1900

05:23 - and as I mentioned the original

05:24 - courthouse still stands with the

05:26 - original sheriffs House and the

05:28 - original public hanging area

05:30 - that was used back in the

05:32 - eighteen hundreds.

05:32 - So it's got a lot of history for

05:34 - history buffs that want to come

05:35 - down and take a tour of the

05:36 - downtown.

05:37 - There's plenty to learn and

05:38 - plenty to see. So we continue

05:40 - our tour in what many locals

05:42 - refer to as downtown Indiana

05:43 - Midtown.

05:44 - We're standing in Indiana

05:45 - Regional Medical Center Park

05:47 - which was part of our

05:48 - streetscape renaissance project

05:50 - which took about 12 years to

05:52 - complete.

05:53 - Fifteen million dollars to

05:54 - replace the sidewalks, trees,

05:57 - standards for the lights and the

05:59 - infrastructure in the streets.

06:01 - But one of the reasons that this

06:02 - was kind of put here was kind of

06:04 - a gathering place for the

06:05 - downtown Indiana and Indiana

06:07 - County.

06:07 - So we do many festivals here in

06:09 - this area we do three prominent

06:11 - festivals that are regional we

06:12 - do our Westylvania Jazz and

06:14 - Blues Festival over Memorial

06:16 - Day, we do the Northern

06:18 - Appalachian Folk Festival over

06:20 - Labor Day, and then we do our

06:21 - It's a Wonderful Life Festival

06:23 - brings about 9,500 people into

06:25 - the downtown area. Now

06:26 - throughout the year these

06:26 - festivals bring about 15,000 to

06:29 - 20,000 people into the town to

06:30 - shop and enjoy.

06:32 - And you'll also see in the area

06:34 - where you have Vinegar Hill

06:35 - steps which were also part of

06:37 - the streetscapes that lead up to

06:38 - the boyhood home of Jimmy

06:40 - Stewart.

06:41 - And we recently conducted a

06:43 - study with IUP Eberly school

06:45 - found out that 97 percent of

06:47 - people that come through

06:48 - downtown Indiana come down after

06:50 - 4:00 o'clock for entertainment

06:52 - and to partake in many of the

06:54 - variety of restaurants here in

06:55 - downtown Indiana.

06:57 - We conclude today's tour of

06:58 - downtown Indiana with the uptown

07:00 - section of downtown Indiana.

07:02 - Prominent buildings you'll find

07:03 - in this space and in this area

07:05 - are the county courthouse was

07:06 - built in 1970. In 1803 Indiana

07:08 - Borough became the county seat

07:10 - of Indiana county helping it

07:12 - flourish and prosper with many

07:14 - businesses. You'll also see

07:15 - behind me the S&T bank corporate

07:17 - headquarters I'd mentioned

07:18 - earlier one of four corporate

07:19 - headquarters here in the

07:20 - downtown area.

07:21 - Also the community center

07:23 - building the Indiana Free

07:24 - Library was built in 1804, now

07:27 - houses the Jimmy Stewart Museum,

07:28 - the Indiana library the home of

07:30 - downtown Indiana and currently

07:32 - to put it into this future use

07:33 - the Indiana Borough and the

07:34 - county and federal monies are

07:35 - being put in to renovate it to

07:37 - make it more viable into the

07:39 - future.

07:40 - Hello my name is Cynthia Watta

07:42 - and this is the food co-op of

07:43 - Indiana Pennsylvania.

07:45 - We recently opened on August 26

07:48 - of 2017 and our main goal was to

07:51 - be a local grocery store because

07:55 - a lot of our grocery stores are

07:56 - kind of out of town.

07:57 - You have to drive to them.

07:59 - It's an inconvenience for

08:00 - college students and people that

08:01 - live closer to this area.

08:03 - So a little bit about this

08:05 - place.

08:05 - It's similar to a farmer's

08:07 - market.

08:08 - We have a lot of locally grown

08:11 - produce and locally made

08:13 - handmade artisan gifts and

08:15 - crafts.

08:16 - The Food Co-op is open five days

08:18 - a week year round and our main

08:21 - goal is to have seasonal produce

08:23 - that's local in and around

08:24 - Indiana Pennsylvania.

08:27 - One of these purposes is that we

08:29 - are giving back to small farmers

08:31 - and small businesses and they

08:34 - give back to us by helping us to

08:36 - stay open because we are a

08:37 - non-profit organization.

08:39 - One thing that we definitely

08:41 - value is that our customers and

08:45 - our members they have a say and

08:48 - what they want to see on our

08:49 - shelves.

08:49 - Our vendors and our farmers,

08:51 - because we value the products

08:53 - that they bring to us, we let

08:55 - them name their price and

08:57 - whatever price they name we give

08:59 - that back to them once that

09:00 - product is sold because we want

09:02 - to make sure that our community

09:03 - grows together and that we

09:06 - continue to support local

09:08 - businesses.

09:09 - One thing we are also very proud

09:11 - of is that we are involved with

09:12 - the IUP community.

09:14 - We help a lot the IUP students

09:16 - get like their volunteer hours

09:18 - so that they need those they're

09:20 - required to graduate and get

09:22 - their degrees so we've got a lot

09:23 - of people from like the

09:23 - dietetics and nutrition program.

09:26 - They come in and they help raise

09:27 - awareness about healthy eating,

09:30 - eating local, eating organic and

09:32 - we also make sure that they help

09:36 - spread the word to like IUP

09:38 - students that eating buying your

09:40 - food and making it home is

09:42 - better, saves you more money and

09:43 - much healthier than eating out

09:45 - every day.

10:03 - I'm George Hood the mayor of

10:05 - Indiana.

10:07 - I was just reelected last

10:08 - Tuesday so I'll be here for four

10:10 - more years.

10:12 - I'm very excited and delighted

10:13 - about.

10:15 - I was, a little bit about me I

10:19 - was born in Indiana 84 years ago

10:24 - at 438 South Church Street and

10:28 - the house still stands today.

10:30 - So I've been here for several

10:33 - councils and so on, and I

10:36 - remember Indiana back then when

10:39 - we were a coal mining community

10:42 - and the university back at that

10:43 - time had just over 3, or 4

10:45 - thousand people.

10:48 - Today the coal mines aren't

10:50 - existing like they did and now

10:54 - the university is expanding a

10:56 - lot more than what it used to be

10:59 - and it's a vital part of Indiana

11:01 - borough.

11:02 - And we do have a good

11:03 - relationship together.

11:06 - I've seen many changes in the

11:07 - community.

11:10 - One of the biggest things is

11:11 - that downtown Indiana is still

11:13 - vibrant but it's not like it

11:15 - used to be because a lot of the

11:17 - stores and businesses have gone

11:20 - to the malls.

11:23 - And one thing that I as mayor am

11:27 - concerned about is the tax

11:31 - payers of Indiana are really the

11:33 - ones that are really paying the

11:35 - bill.

11:36 - Now other people donate money

11:38 - for different things.

11:39 - But the borough tax payers are

11:42 - the ones that are paying the

11:43 - bills for all the other

11:45 - activities, and I do know that

11:49 - the Indiana Borough police

11:50 - department is excellent.

11:53 - I've seen the staff in Indiana

11:56 - Borough.

11:57 - It's excellent.

11:59 - We all work together very

12:01 - happily and I'm very proud of

12:04 - Chief Sutton and I'm very proud

12:06 - of Bradley Gotshal and I'm

12:10 - looking forward to another four

12:13 - years.

12:22 - community center building. We're

12:24 - located in the heart of Indiana

12:26 - at 9th and Philadelphia streets.

12:29 - What makes a community special

12:31 - are the offerings we can present

12:34 - to our community members and

12:36 - people who visit this community

12:39 - and in Indiana we feel we're

12:40 - really blessed with offerings to

12:43 - present to you.

12:44 - Folks right now we're speaking

12:46 - from our recreated office of

12:49 - James Stewart.

12:50 - This was an office Mr. Stewart

12:52 - kept on Wilshire Boulevard in

12:54 - Hollywood to conduct his

12:55 - business affairs which weren't

12:57 - limited to movie making and we

13:01 - have several photographs of Mr.

13:02 - Stewart in the office and our

13:04 - collection really reflects all

13:06 - the things that he had in that

13:08 - office while he occupied it.

13:11 - We're now standing in a setting

13:13 - that represents the Stewart

13:15 - family hardware which was

13:16 - founded in Indiana in 1853 and

13:21 - Mr. Stewart's father Alex fully

13:23 - assumed ownership of that

13:25 - enterprise near the 1900's.

13:29 - This building where the museum

13:31 - is located is owned and operated

13:34 - by the Borough of Indiana and it

13:37 - houses two of the most appealing

13:38 - aspects our community has to

13:40 - offer.

13:41 - Downstairs the great Indiana

13:43 - free library and here the

13:46 - incomparable Jimmy Stewart

13:48 - Museum.

13:49 - The museum has been a part of

13:51 - the Indiana community for over

13:53 - 20 years.

13:55 - We also serve the county as the

13:57 - premier tourist attraction and

14:01 - share the inspiring life story

14:03 - of the international film icon

14:07 - James Stewart who was born just

14:09 - a few blocks from where we're

14:10 - standing.

14:12 - Our museum is fortunate to be

14:15 - able to welcome guests from

14:16 - around our nation and literally

14:19 - around the world all

14:22 - contributing to the economic

14:23 - well-being of the borough and

14:26 - adding to the special quality of

14:27 - life we have in our hometown

14:30 - Indiana, Pennsylvania.

15:53 - It's the second largest state

15:55 - owned college and it's probably

15:58 - the best college here in

16:00 - Pennsylvania.

16:01 - We also brag a little bit

16:04 - because we are the Christmas

16:05 - tree capital of the world and we

16:08 - also are the hometown for what

16:11 - we consider to be Indiana

16:13 - County's favorite son Jimmy

16:15 - Stewart.

16:16 - And if you take time to come to

16:17 - Indiana and come to the

16:19 - courthouse you have a chance to

16:20 - have your photograph taken right

16:22 - in front of the courthouse with

16:24 - Jimmy Stewart himself.

16:59 - it's one of the most wonderful

17:02 - to live here in Pennsylvania.

17:05 - briefly today about some of the

17:07 - things that we have offer here

17:09 - right inside of Indiana Borough.

17:11 - It's one of only it's only one

17:13 - of 14 boroughs in Indiana county

17:15 - but it is truly the crown jewel

17:17 - of Indiana County.

17:19 - When you walk out of the

17:20 - courthouse onto Philadelphia

17:21 - street whether you go to the

17:22 - right or to the left you're

17:23 - going to find a very vibrant

17:25 - business district.

17:26 - We have shops and stores and

17:28 - restaurants of every kind to

17:30 - everyone's liking.

17:31 - We have some of the largest and

17:33 - finest financial institutions

17:35 - that are based right here in

17:36 - Indiana county.

17:37 - Some of the largest banks in

17:39 - Pennsylvania are headquartered

17:41 - right here directly across from

17:42 - the courthouse.

17:43 - We're right down the street in

17:44 - the old courthouse building

17:46 - which happens to be one of the

17:47 - most historic buildings in

17:49 - Indiana County. Indiana is very

17:52 - fortunate to host Indiana

17:54 - University of Pennsylvania.

17:56 - One of the finest universities

17:58 - in the in the Commonwealth.

17:59 - We have about 13,000 students

18:01 - who attend there who add to the

18:02 - population of this great

18:03 - community.

18:04 - Every time the students are back

18:06 - here in town and we enjoy it so

18:07 - much.

18:09 - One of the best things about

18:10 - Indiana borough in Indiana

18:11 - County is that nobody does

18:12 - Christmas the way Indiana does

18:14 - it. From the It's a Wonderful

18:16 - Life Festival down on 7th Street

18:19 - to the Lucy Donnelly Memorial

18:21 - Parade to the Jimmy Stewart

18:24 - Museum which is right next door

18:25 - to the courthouse here.

18:26 - It's truly a wonderful life in

18:28 - Indiana borough in Indiana

18:30 - county.

18:31 - Hi I'm Sherene Hess Indiana

18:33 - county commissioner. I'm serving

18:35 - my first term as county

18:37 - commissioner.

18:38 - And when I first moved Indiana

18:39 - about 25 years ago I was struck

18:42 - by the uniqueness of this town.

18:44 - A small town surrounded by the

18:46 - pastoral beauty of our

18:48 - agricultural operations.

18:50 - And we have a wonderful farmer's

18:52 - market and we have a new food

18:54 - co-op in Indiana County and

18:57 - agriculture is our number one

18:58 - industry.

18:59 - I'm also struck by how wonderful

19:03 - of a town this is in terms of

19:04 - its downtown.

19:05 - We have something for everybody

19:07 - here, if you like ethnic and

19:09 - authentic foods we and many

19:11 - wonderful restaurants. We have

19:13 - great festivals and many family

19:16 - oriented events that go on year

19:17 - round.

19:18 - It really is a wonderful place.

19:20 - We also have a very diverse

19:21 - community.

19:22 - We have over a thousand students

19:24 - and community members who from

19:26 - 60 different countries and most

19:28 - of them are connected with our

19:30 - terrific university IUP and

19:32 - we're really pleased to say we

19:34 - have a wonderful relationship

19:35 - with the university and we're

19:37 - always striving to make folks

19:40 - feel welcome here.

19:42 - Something really special that we

19:43 - have here in Indiana is an

19:44 - independent hospital our Indiana

19:46 - Regional Medical Center.

19:47 - It's a terrific place that we

19:50 - have here in a rural area and we

19:51 - have a strong maternity ward and

19:53 - we have many caring nurses and

19:54 - doctors and even specialists

19:56 - here so just another one of the

19:58 - amenities that Indiana county

20:00 - and Indiana borough can offer.

20:01 - Hello, my name is Michelle

20:03 - Fryling and I'm very proud to

20:04 - serve as the Executive Director

20:06 - of Communications and Media

20:08 - Relations at Indiana University

20:09 - of Pennsylvania.

20:10 - IUP is so proud to be home to

20:13 - almost 900 international

20:15 - students coming from upwards of

20:17 - 60 countries.

20:18 - We also have students from all

20:20 - over the United States.

20:22 - And then we are very proud of

20:24 - the way that we serve the

20:25 - students right here in the

20:26 - commonwealth.

20:27 - And in fact many students right

20:28 - here from Indiana County. We

20:30 - have an incredible arts program

20:32 - incredible arts and public

20:34 - events program.

20:35 - We talk a lot about how that

20:37 - we're bringing people like Black

20:38 - Violin or we've had people like

20:42 - Billy Joel here.

20:43 - We've had incredible performing

20:45 - artists, lecturers, and you

20:47 - don't have to worry about going

20:49 - to Pittsburgh and paying an

20:50 - exorbitant amount of fees to

20:51 - park.

20:52 - But we're right here in our

20:53 - ticket prices are designed to

20:55 - offer those opportunities not

20:57 - only to our students but to the

20:58 - community.

20:59 - And we have many community

21:00 - residents who feel like they

21:02 - could never make enough time to

21:04 - go to all the things that we

21:05 - offer.

21:06 - We also are extremely proud to

21:09 - have a wonderful complex

21:11 - Kovalchick Convention and

21:13 - Athletic Complex.

21:14 - The community has really

21:16 - embraced the complex it's only

21:18 - about five years old right now

21:20 - and it's really a great

21:22 - opportunity for people to have

21:24 - entertainment you might only

21:26 - expect to see in bigger cities

21:28 - right here in your backyard.

21:29 - We also have an amazing Division

21:32 - 2 sports program.

21:34 - We have a great football team.

21:37 - We have hundreds and hundreds of

21:38 - people come to the KCA see for

21:41 - our women's and our men's

21:42 - basketball team programs.

21:44 - The contests are well attended.

21:46 - We have great community support.

21:48 - And where else can you go right

21:50 - in your backyard to have

21:51 - incredible D2 basketball action?

21:54 - We also have volleyball teams,

21:55 - we have golf teams that continue

21:57 - to win national championships.

21:59 - We have incredible buildings.

22:00 - We were founded in 1875 and the

22:03 - building where I work, John

22:05 - Sutton Hall, is one of the

22:06 - original buildings and we have

22:08 - worked very hard to maintain the

22:27 - We were founded as a teachers

22:29 - college but we've grown into so

22:30 - much more with more than 130

22:32 - majors, undergraduate majors and

22:35 - programs, and 14 doctoral

22:37 - programs 60 master's programs.

22:39 - So we have students that are

22:40 - doing amazing things.

22:42 - IUP couldn't be doing the great

22:45 - work we're doing without the

22:46 - support of our community.

22:48 - Our community is extremely

22:50 - important to us and in fact the

22:52 - Indiana high schools in Indiana

22:54 - county schools are some of our

22:55 - largest draws for our students.

22:57 - So when I say that our students

22:59 - are part of the community that

23:03 - also seeing are students maybe

23:06 - from a little further distances.

23:07 - They become part of this

23:09 - community and we appreciate so

23:15 - faculty, welcomes all of us to

23:19 - Indiana County community.
