The Christiana Resistance of 1851, History & Culture

On September 11, 1851, a slaveholder from Maryland attempted to seize an escaped slave at the home of William Parker in Christiana, PA. Residents from the area answered an emergency call and arrived at the farm to protect the freedom seeker from capture. In what became known as the Christiana Resistance, the slaveholder Edward Gorsuch was killed and others wounded. In the aftermath, the freedom seeker magaged to avoid capture and made his way north.
