Danville Borough, Exploring PA Boroughs

(2020) Located an hour and a half north of Harrisburg, along the north branch of the Susquehanna River, sits Danville Borough. The borough is the county seat of Montour County, and is called home by 4,669 Pennsylvanians. The area was originally known as "Montgomery's Landing", after William Montgomery, a key figure in Revolutionary-era Pennsylvania. William Montgomery relocated his family here in 1774, building a farm, sawmill, and trading post. In 1792 he built the William Montgomery House, which now houses the Montour County historical society. That same year his son, Daniel Montgomery, began plotting the land that would eventually bear his name, Danville. Danville became a hub of coal and iron production, as mines dug out the hills surrounding it, and by the middle of the 19th century Danville was an important iron-mill town. Today, those same hills are now part of an expanding network of trails and parks. The Booth Theatre is a hub for local entertainment, and is part of a growing downtown of Danville businesses.
