(2023) The Franklin County Historical Society is based in Chambersburg and focuses on preserving Cumberland Valley history through its museum and genealogy library. The society also promotes the preservation of historic sites and oversees property, such as the Old Jail. The Old Jail was built in 1818 and operated as such for 150 years, surviving the Confederates’ burning of Chambersburg in 1864 and usage as a way-station on the Underground Railroad. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Sites in 1970 and now serves as a museum.
